pronunciation got sooo much easier after i took a phonetics class. the way words are pronounced is actually pretty formulaic! once you know where the stress in the word is, you can pretty much always know how to pronounce it. highly recommend looking into russian phonetics if you're struggling with or want to improve your pronunciation!

Only exceptions are the foreign borrowed or derived words with е pronounced as э (модель, интернет) or и pronounced as ы (дезинфекция), though they too to some extent become predictable. Edit: Forgot to add, some words with an unstressed о pronounced as stressed о, like ха́ос or пери́од.

Thanks! I love zdraastvoetje (Dutch way of phonetic writing) as word, it was my first Russian word. The other ones: thank you so much for showing. It is how I do it: breaking down the words first. For Dutch people not so hard to pronounce btw. We have words with 4 consonants in a row as well

In Russian, the consonants and vowels have a hard or soft sound. In English, they have many sounds depending on the letter they precede or follow, and of course with exceptions.
@jolevangelista
@jolevangelista 3 жыл бұрын
In reality people rarely say consonants as hard as you would hear them from foreigners. You barely touch your mouth with a tip of your tongue when you speak and it is next to impossible to say them as hard. So I would say it is also a variety of sounds. Unless people yelling and angry. and emphasize particular words or it is a super official and formal announcement / explanation. Then only you can here R for example in its pure form (like Fedor said).

The thing that screwed with my mind was the “O” at the end of certain words makes the “Ah” sound even though it”s at the end of a word like ctydentko “Student” (female gender) masculine would just be ctydent.or “Milk” malako. Sorry no Cyrillic keyboard on my IPod.
@Katya_Lastochka
@Katya_Lastochka 3 жыл бұрын
When the accent isn't on the "O" it makes an "Ah" sound, simply because it takes less time. Female student is "studentka", though. I think all female oriented words end with "ah".

Sounds like the cases like днём and дня do what's called glottalisation. British English (at least Cockney) does T-glottalisation with "butter" being pronounced "bu'er", the t sound being replaced with that throat sound. We also tend to do it before syllable final p, t or k, so "sit" might be "si't"

For здравствуйте (formal 'hello'), it can be helpful to say "is draw" in english, and focus on the middle part. Of course when we say "is" in english, it's pronounced 'iz' so 'is draw' becomes 'iz draw', so "iZDRAw". Then give the "R" a trill, and you've got it. For Ы, well, sort of similar to a combination of "ee (long E)" and "ooo" in english, or "И" and "У" in russian, but voiced at the same time. Watch "Операция Ы" (Operation Y) on KZfaq for lots of examples of "Ы" in isolation. Interestingly, some of the actors seem to emphasize the "И" more than the "У" sound, and vice versa. Hope some of that helped.

When you are a wee bit familiar with the Cyrillic alphabet and Russian words, a word like достопримечательность is not so hard to pronounce. At least not for a Dutch native, like me. The word looks scary in the beginning, because it is such a long word, but when you break it up into small pieces, you get it rather quickly. To me the combination of sounds in шьс, like eg занимаешься, is much much harder to grasp. It took me a lot of practise time. Since I know that I am not a very unique individual, I assume that many others will have issues pronouncing these sounds too. Занимаешься looks much less impressive than достопримечательность, but it is a lot harder!

Why russian alphabet doesn't had "Ha" or "H", And how can i translate "John" for russian letter?

There's no silent H, but there's a hard H, which is X. John is spelled Джон, but oddly enough the equivalent to John is actually Ivan.

здоровье и самочувствие - разные вещи. Как твоё здоровье? - спрашивают только если человек болел. Правильно говорить "Как самочувствие?" = "How are you?"
