This video is about Hardy's Paradox, wherein an electron and positron (or photons polarized horizontally and vertically) pass through Mach-Zehnder interferometers that overlap such that the particles have a chance of annihilating. If they do annihilate, then the interference pattern changes and there is a probability for both particles to be detected in the "dark arms" of the detector, that is, where previously there was no probability for detection for either particle. The paradox has implications for local realism, contextuality, lorentz elements of reality, and has been used as an experimental setup for weak measurements.

Is it that hard to replace "cat" with "particle" in your head? It's not like there's any depth to the metaphor. It's not like any parts or aspects of a cat gets further compared to quantum particles. In fact, it's so meaningless that i wouldn't even call it a metaphor. It's just a goof.

Wikipedia says on Double-slit experiment: "The experiment can be done with entities much larger than electrons and photons, although it becomes more difficult as size increases. The largest entities for which the double-slit experiment has been performed were molecules that each comprised 810 atoms (whose total mass was over 10,000 atomic mass units)."

I started watching Henry way back in 2011. I was still in college and this guy had made this physics explainer video using stop motion on paper, and it looked so damn cool. 7 years later and now so many KZfaqrs are doing this. You have come a long way. Keep making such awesome stuff.

In cat darkness where only chaos reigns one man finds a way to bring back light by having the cat and anti cat go through the same slit both blocking the other one but both reaching this world by the power of quantum mechanics.

Why can't two cats pass through the same slit? I mean, the wavefunction does not have a volume like macroscopic objects. If one is a particle and the other its antiparticule, then it's true they won't pass through the slit, even though there should still be a state (so 4 states, not just 3) in which they both annihilate and don't go through. If they are both the same type of particle, I guess by Pauli's exclusion principle they can't be at the same point in the same quantum state. But if they are just two photons, why can't they both go through the same slit at the same time?

It was implied by his cat analogy that the concept is fairly general and can apply to different types of particles. In the case of photons, they could be made to be phase-shifted from each other in such a way that they cancel each other out completely at the middle slit. These two photons could be viewed as being the "anti" counterparts to each other.

But if that happens, then after they have interact and their wavefunctions have collapsed, right after that, they'll continue to propagate in form of waves, so they will still make an interference pattern and so it should be accounted when adding all the states to the superposition, this forth state should be taken into account. If I'm not wrong. So I think what Flatgod said makes sense.

I assumed it was because the slit has only that much radius so either the particles cancel out or they bounce back, like in the gold foil experiment.

Satish Bhoos in truth nobody understands cats, even the famous cat psychologist Dr. Felix Grimalkin has admitted as such. So when we bring in quantum cats they are bound to behave only in statistically significant ways.

I feel like this is better explained with pilot wave theory, no superposition, just particles riding on waves that interfere with each other. Perfectly understandable...

Yeah exempt pilot wave theory requires you add extra math which means extra assumptions. That and you can't reconcile it with gravity at a quantum level, which is why De Broglie never went over to the pilot wave camp even though he was the first one to first suggest it.

@@odinakazeus You can't reconcile regular quantum mechanics with gravity either. But regular QM has a special-relativistic version (QFT), while Bohmian mechanics does not

I think the reason people don't try is because one can't. If it was pilot waves instead of superposition, both cats wouldn't go through. Nor can it explain or predict the double slit experiment, or the DCQE, or make a useful prediction for more than one particle at a time. That's why even Einstein didn't care for it; even though it fit better with his beliefs.

Thanks Henry. I have often wondered about the results of a double double slit experiment. I think your explanation was good though did have pause and rewatch. The paradox is interesting, I never thought of it because I only considered the result just the addition of all the superpositions and not just that of a single cat. I don't mind the cat metaphor as reminds me not to think classically and it applies to anything.

Good video as always! I particularly like that you emphasize the accuracy of quantum mechanics. Usually people seem to mystify this theory, leading others to think it's really blurry, even for scientists. In reality it's actually a very rigorous mathematical model which describes reality with an astounding precision.

But this is not a paradox. Quantum mechanics is not fully understood so how can it be a paradox? A paradox is something you do understand in conflict with logic. Now with quantum mechanics it is something that is not fully understood in conflict with your logic. So theres a big separation.

1:36 Um why isn't there a possibility where the bottom cat goes through the top slit and vice versa? Don't Feynman's path integrals prove that particles take all possible paths?

The bottom cat is staying restricted to the bottom two slits as its own double-split experiment. Likewise for the top cat. The middle slit is shared as if the individual experiments were layered or superimposed on top of each other.

Feynstein 100 There is some possibility, yes, but the particle sources are arranged such that the probability is very, very low. By putting a mask between the bottom source and the slits that completely blocks the top slit, for example. Quantum being quantum, there’s still some non-zero chance the particle tunnels through the mask or diffracts at some crazy angle and goes through the top slit anyway, but the probability of that can be made small enough that its contribution to the final result is negligible.

@tehlaser Ahaha fair enough. Although, I guess there is a very simple way to test it: by running the experiment with only one cat and seeing if the third slit makes any difference to the results with two slits. :)

Feynstein 100 the feynman path integral does say a particle takes every possible path, but not equally. The path integral accounts for the likeliness of that happening by giving each possibility weight. The bottom two slits are equal length from the starting position, so equally likely, but the third top slit is a further distance so it is exponentially less likely because particles follow the shortest path. So the third slit does matter, but only like .000001%

Yeah, the cat goes out the front door, along the street, round the side of the end house, over the fences of the back gardens, then comes in through the back door. It's what cats do. Often repeatedly.

Hey, I know that pop science loves to present quantum mechanics as 'weird', 'odd', and use things like 'cat being both alive and dead' or 'going through slits" and all that, but it's been nearly 100 years since quantum mechanics became established science; it's no longer supposed to be weird and odd. It is only (and should only be presented as such) as very, very successful way of describing and thinking about certain phenomena. Cats don't display observable wave-like properties through double slits, particles do. That's sort of it. I'm not even sure why we still talk about particles in the classical sense - electrons are never "particles" as being like little balls. They only act like it in certain circumstances (like being absorbed by a screen). "Particle is in a super position" is more accurately, "The amplitude describing a particle is in a super position".

The reason it’s talked about in that way is because it’s still weird and unintuitive. It’s not like we discovered quantum mechanics and now we all quantum tunnel through walls and scatter into probability waves when we walk through doors. Our experience of the physical world hasn’t changed so even though quantum mechanics describes the physical world extremely well, it’s still extremely confusing and novel to people new to the subject. Even experts on the subject talk about how difficult it is to visualize what’s actually happening in quantum mechanics and how if you think you understand it you probably don’t

Yours is the FIRST video I've seen that showed the waves this way; other videos have left me picturing the other kind of light waves - you know, the ripply arrows of light waves darting forward. Which made no sense to me. THANK YOU for my "ah hah!" moment today!

Unfortunately with a lot of quantum mechanics there is no nice intuitive way to understand due to its very unintuitive nature. Niels Bohr said "If quantum mechanics hasn't profoundly shocked you, you haven't understood it yet." which I think pretty much sums it up

For me the expression as a superposition is rather simple. The superposition of all four slit pairs results in a pair of non-interacting double-slit experiments. Then you just subtract one of the cases, which alone would produce just a single peak with both types of cats mixed together. And, as we know, subtracting a non-zero value (wide peak) from a zero value (narrow troughs) results in a non-zero value (cats appearing in places where they wouldn't with either double slit experiment alone).

probably because you are seeing something that needs a lot of prior knowledge to fully understand. he tried to explain something expecting you to already know about how the experiment works. maybe if you go back and watch some of his videos or other videos about quantum entanglement it will be easier to understand.

Read “The Strange World of Quantum Mechanics” by Daniel Styer. I read it in my modern physics class and tbh it helps you understand quantum mechanics a lot easier. Although I feel like no one can TRULY understand quantum mechanics unless you major in physics + maybe get a graduate degree focused on quantum mechanics because of the subject’s huge contrasts with classical physics and general logic

(in response to special relativity series) what would a Lorenz-Transformation be like on a velocity/time (or any other) graph, would the math be drastically different. could the space and time axis be swapped with different axis to mathematically describe something else in physics or math also, if theres a spacetime pythagorean theorem, how is spacetime trigonometry.

Wait, if in one of the states of the superposition one cat is going through the middle slit, shouldn't it interfere with itself to create a point where there's cat darkness, and that state combine with the result of the other states to create a different point (but there's still a point) where there's cat darkness?

This kind of thing is why I had so much trouble with single slit diffraction. When you show the diffraction pattern for two slits, it’s actually the single slit diffraction pattern. Before I learned about how both patterns really worked, I thought that single slit diffraction did not create that pattern but simply created one bell curve like spot. You are not the only one who has done this which is why I got it wrong until my physics teacher set me straight.

Such cats are clearly alive, and therefore not quantum-cats. They will then not create an interference pattern, but end up as spots on the wall.

i have a question, wouldn't the addition of a third slit change the interference pattern of a single wave source already? it comes to mind that adding a third slit would change some previously "dark" areas to "somewhat lit" areas. i.e my question is whether what i mentioned above agrees with experiments or is this not enough? if this question seems lacking it is because i haven't REALLY learnt any quantum mechanics aside from broadly general explanations of it. if i were to try and describe both the electron and positron as waves, what would the positron look like compared to the electron? what would the interaction of these waves look like?

I have an interesting thought experiment: So what if you have two objects completely still relative to spacetime, and there is nothing else in the universe except for those objects. Now lets say you got one moving at just below lightspeed relative to spacetime in the direction of the other object. Then lets say we got the other object doing the same thing but toward the first object. So that would mean that the objects would be moving at almost twice the speed of light relative to each other. So, Einstein says that everything is relative, so would physics alter it as to not violate going faster than c, like time dialation, or would this be completely legal in physics? And if so, what would happen?

Well first of all there is no such thing as absolute motion, the theory is called relativity because you can only compare motion between two or more things, relativity actually did away with absolute rest and absolute motion and basically proves that there is no 'correct' coordinate system which you can move relative to (spacetime in your example) but there is due to other reasons the speed of light, c, which is invariant to all observers which causes time dilation and lengths to contract like you said. But you actually don't need absolute motion for what you are talking about, you can get that effect in this univerese. Say you pick two galaxies, in opposite directions from here and very far away. Due to the expansion of the universe, the left galaxy is travelling 0.6c away from us, and the right one is travelling the same, well from our point of view, it could be argued the left galaxy is travelling away from the right galaxy at 1.2 c or faster than the speed of light. For various other reasons like those listed above, including time dilation and the effects of acceleration you could never travel to those galaxies and measure that speed but from the earths inertial reference frame you could. And yes time would dilate and lengths would contract if you managed to reach one of the galaxies due to the speed you'd have to travel and so that would be the universes way of making sure everything always comes out to less than c.

Probably my ignorance talking, but if there was a way of ascertaining that a cat-particle could *only* go through one of the slits, then wouldn't the interference pattern be destroyed anyway? So to preserve coherence, nature has to allow itself the possibility of both cat-ticles getting through the middle slit.

The creation of the superposition when you fire a particle means that the particle always 'trys' to go through both slits!

I guess my point was if you could produce a situation where you could prevent either from going through the middle, by firing them off at once, then there would be no interference pattern. That there is a pattern means that, even if 'impossible', both particles must be able to still get through the middle slit, so they both do and don't. (don't mind me, just trying to wrap my head around this)

@@rhaythe They are both going through the middle, and both not going through the middle - but their superpositions are _linked._ If the individual states are A and B, the combined state is not (AA, AB, BA, BB) like you might expect. There's only three options, not four. That changes the probabilities. They are still going through the middle, but not as much.

@@DavidGuild Well, not quite: you still have four possibilities (as you must, due to linear algebra) - only thing is that one of the combos - say BB - is not detected by the apparatus. In other words, _the detected states are not 1-to-1 correlated with the initial states_

ok...I know the double slit experiment works when you send one cat through at a time, and the probability distribution is the same as the diffraction pattern. But in the double-double slit experiment, would that still work, say, if the cat and anti-cats took turns? Would it be two overlapping but independent probability distributions or would the existence of one cat-sender interfere with the behavior of another, even if it's sending it at a different time? Thanks!

Strange that no explainer ever talks about the interaction (bumping, reflection) of waves or particles with the slit itself (its thickness, its dimensions, its material, its structure).

Because that isn't really relevant at all. Going into a bunch of detail about non-ideal slits and interactions with the material would just confuse people without helping them understand anything about quantum interference or superposition. What you're looking for sounds more like something you'd find in a college class on wave mechanics or something. To address some of your specific questions: - The wall thickness doesn't matter much, the pattern basically comes from the back side of the slits. - Reflection also doesn't do much, we don't care about the particles that bounce back, so it's mostly just reflections on the slit edges. The important thing is where the particles come from, so if the reflections still come from the slits the pattern will be the same. If they lose energy interacting with the wall then they could have a longer wavelength which would stretch out the pattern. - Changing the size of the slits can be interesting, you can get single slit interference where the light from one side of the slit interferes with light from the other side. - Particles passing through the wall should give you a background glow underneath the interference pattern, that would depend on the wall material but should be very small regardless.

Yeah, you're right. It's impossible to say that the slits does not interfere. Just remember that every particle carries around it a larger-then-the-slit field of something, it could be magnetic, it could be gravity, it could be the electrons cloud or even a unknown filed that interacts with the slit and with itself after going through the hole. Recent suggestions mention the Pilot Guide Wave as a field that "touches" the slit and creates interference.

Contrary to what a lot of the comments seem to assume, I'm pretty sure the cats aren't there to make it easier to understand the underlying quantum mechanics, but to make it easier to understand just how weird this phenomenon is. And to their credit: that they do beautifully. Although judging from other comments, he may have skipped a few too many steps in explaining the underlying mechanics, and adding elements to relay the weirdness of the phenomenon only really works when the phenomenon is vaguely understood in the first place. It's a difficult balance to strike.

One possibility: the wave-form that overlaps between the two is canceling out the original's shadow. Like how +1 and -1 make 0 in the original experiment, but if you take +1, -1, and a +1 from the dual experiment, you get +1.

err.... it's not weird as long as you forget this notion of "quantum particles"... quantum physics doesn't tell you what the universe IS, it tells you what the universe DOES, so we can only talk about quantum particle-like behaviour, because we can only measure behaviour, the interactions that appear particle-like, but we cannot force an idea like actually being a particle on the universe... you will find things don't really make sense if you believe you can.

All these flunky KZfaq videos on "double-slit" experiments miss the point of the experiment. The real experiment is that only one photon is sent to a sheet with two slits. The slits are only big enough to allow for one photon. When not observed they interfere. Meaning it can't be determined which slit the individual photon went through. The single photon behaves like a wave that interferes with itself. But when a device is placed to observe the slits, then the photon only goes through one of the slits each time. It was the observation that affected the photon to behave like a particle. While not being observed it behaves like a wave (able to interfere with itself). Talk about the real double-slit experiment. It takes special equipment to do it, not some laser pointer!

Interesting. I understood the whole video. Although at the end you said 'weirdness is not paradox' as if its some kind of misnomer, so do you know what a paradox is? A paradox is just something where the outcome is unexpected and contrary to intuition, so its a perfect example of a veritical paradox.

Question: what sort of pattern do you get from sending one particle at three slits? Do you get an interference pattern from both slits? And in this experiment, how do you know you don't get, for instance, the "top" particle going through the bottom slit while the "bottom" particle goes through the middle slit?

For sending one particle through three slits, you would likely get an interference pattern similar to the double slit experiment. As for the top going through the bottom and vice versa, there is likely a screen to block those possibilities to simplify the experiment.

Its just new information in 5 minutes. Want me to teach you how to race a motorcycle in 5 minutes? I can say everything you need to know in that time. You may not absorb it however.

I think this video is expecting a lot of prior understanding on behalf of the viewer, which wouldn't be an issue if it had been stated at the beginning. I would bet that my flatmates studying quantum mechanics at uni would have found this useful for their studies, but for the rest of us it doesn't illuminate much. Although, maybe that's just the difficulty of quantum mechanics.

ok so i didnt get one thing, if the e- and e+ dont interfere (i'm guessing that because of the way you showed their patterns with different colors) then how and why would they block eachother in the middle slit?

If you think about quantum field theory and that an electron is just a disturbance in the electromagnetic field and that they act as probability waves in this experiment, Couldn't just say 10% of the probability wave of the electrons location go through one slit and 90% the other ( or any ratio) thus causing it to "interact with itself" and go though both slits? Or like quantum tunneling for example. Could just part of the wave particle go thru one slit and the rest thru the other slit? Or would this not be possible because the wave collapses when it hits the first slit? Thanks, (and I'm aware a lot of what I just stated is probably incorrect, just learning)

What stops the particles from going through the middle slit one after another? Are they always launched at the exact same moment and do they always take the exact same path? If there is a small difference in the launch angle of the particles one of them can reach the slit before the other.

I think they are launched at the exact same time from the same distant to the middle slit. This way, they must intercept the slit at the same time.

Last winter I observed how snow fell through two slits in a fence and created a beautiful wave pattern. Wind was the culprit behind those particle waves of single snow crystals ending up in concentrations just like I've seen illustrated in these,

So with C-60, we still see wave-like behaviour. This is a huge molecule and I'm curious if we've repeated the Double Slit Experiment with viruses or bacteria? Can life be in superpositions? Are we in superposition????

Does this also work when you send only 2 particles at the same time through 3 slits? That they "can" end up in a position's that would be paradoxical? I mean I know that If you send a lot of them the pattern will emerge, but it is not clear in the video that it will work for only 2 particles. Although I will have to re-watch the video to confirm it. And do a lot of research of my own on this. But I have to go now and help my dad.

OK, My bad. I was so thrown off by change to cat (I don't know why, usually I don't mind), that my brain switched off. I Apologize for the stupid question, I have (hopefully) a smarter one. Has anyone did (I think they did, it is almost impossible to think that people would stop) three slit experiment, were the slits, are so close enough (probably at least half of the wavelength for the two outer slits), that the particle is forced to go through all three of them and interfere with itself, although a lot of information would be destroyed by interference from waves from 2 adjacent slits, perhaps some would survive to interfere with unchanged wave that is a result of the furthest slit "changing it to wave". I wonder how it would look like. I took in too much advanced Quantum Physics, and now thanks to you, I realize how bad I am at the basics. Back to Basics.

Since double slit experiments are done in normal environments where no care is taken to isolate particles from the environment, how can they be in superposition? How are those normal environmental conditions (air particles and EM fields) different from detection equipment that destroy superposition?

I think it would be really awesome if you actually worked out the math involving these experiments in some videos, because sometimes is really hard to think how you would apply it to a problem, and there are really few people explaining it step by step, so that people that are not used to the bracket notation and the gauge fields can understand it. Anyway, I think you’re the guy for doing it, but your video was, as usual, awesome!
