Thanks Mike - Going thru the Harley manual way of figuring out the compensating shim is pretty hard to understand. I have chain/ chain (79 FXE) & the clutch basket does not set under the primary like the manual says it is supposed to, so it has been an issue getting it set. Actually the primary, starter & solenoid have all been a challenge. Keep up the good work, love the videos, wish you guys were aorund me... there are hardly no shovelhead folks around anymore

My names Mike as well. I would love to see you do a video on timing using the EZ Timer tool which I believe you have installed. I saw it previously on this video and just ordered one. I have a 71 FL that I just changed the transmission seal, a few transmission gaskets, replaced the 22 tooth sproket with a 24 tooth sprocket and I'm waiting on a diamond 530 chain. I bought a 530 "O" ring chain but it looks to be to tight and I don't want to trash my primary. Again thanks for doing such a great job. I've learned a ton from watching your videos.

Appreciate the wealth of knowledge you share, thank you! Having trouble aligning a bdl belt drive w/ tensioner in a closed primary. 1979 FXEF w/ S&S 5in4 case. Belt rubs inside of inner primary and created a groove and it rides inside of front pulley. Installed inner primary as per manual and used your video as a guide. Is there any other way to better align this setup?
@pacificmike9501

I would need to look at it and study for a while. Every time you think you know something well, a new issue comes up. If your output shaft on your engine and your transmission mainshaft are in the same plane, it sounds like your clutch basket is in too far. That's quite an issue. I assume you're using a BDL clutch. You may have to contact them. You can't have a new problem. I'm sure it's happened before. These things occur when we mix and match several brands that have different tollerances. Again, make sure your shafts are in the same plane. A piece of plate glass layed on top of the pulleys with the belt removed will suffice.

Looking to modify it for the last time for comfort and reliability. My concern pertains to the primary drive. I cannot find a source to acquire the Fischer Damper and does cut down on vibration. I've run one of those Fischer Dampers for many trouble free years. Does it really help vibration? I think it takes out a little I can feel and probably more I don't feel. I also put one on my buddy Jim's bike years ago. Problem is, I don't know that they are still being made. They were produced by a company known as "Genuine Fischer," in Santa Fe Springs, CA.

It's not extreme. I like to think that balancing anything that spins is a good thing. At speed, I take it up to about 5mph over the speed I want to go, then back off about 5mph. I can feel it get a little smoother. I like it.

@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 6 жыл бұрын
They both have their place. Belts are clean and nice. Chains allow easy ratio changes. Modern chains are way superior to what we had years ago. Interestingly enough, modern super bikes are still running chains. It seems chains are the most efficient source of transmitting power. Again, they both have their place.

Charles Sturgeon : belt tension is VERY important. also never use aftermarket pulleys and belts, just use HD. Belts can last up to 100.000 miles. No chain is going to reach anywhere near that mileage. I have no preference, I like chains too, I just add a chain oiler and ride!

SO I put my inner primary together like you were saying in your other video, everything went together well, but the inner primary seems to have warped a bit...it that usual? Nothing seems to be not where it should so ??thoughts?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 6 жыл бұрын
Alignment is king. Therefore, a warp could mean replacing the inner primary housing. I'm sorry I can't see it from here. Remember, the transmission needs to be loose from it's mounting plate in order to align it with the housing and motor. Sometimes parts have been installed wrong and therefore, damaged.

I recently purchased a 1981 Tour Glide that is equipped with a sealed rear drive chain enclosure assembly with a automatic chain drip oiler. It's time to replace the rear chain , and the lower pass of the chain rubber boot of this assembly is worn open at the bottom edge. I may be able to find a boot for it , but many people say it is more convenient to remove this enclosed system and add a chain guard. I have no experience with it yet , so I could use some advice. Thank You.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
The service manual shows it. It is a "bath," not a "drip." That final drive system is quite good, if not disturbed. Chains basically don't wear out with that thing on there. Too many people pulled them off without ever thinking what they may be. Once removed, nobody seemed to ever want to put them back on. The wheel can easily be removed by just removing the lug bolts. Another good idea that fell by the wayside. A chain submerged in oil will last a looong time. But, I also have no idea how hard it would be to get parts for that system.

I have a mostly stock 1971 FL and recently purchased the same timing piece that you have bolted to the two safety-wired inner primary bolts. Should I locate the 35 degree advance slash in the centered in the timing window, when it's moving up on the compression stroke of the front cylinder, and place a mark with high viz paint on the alternator cover that's aligned with the 35 degree mark on the timing device when the slash is centered in the timing window? I'm tired of the oil mist, the clear plug isn't worth using and I would really love your thoughts on the proper way to set this up. FYI - I have the M6 tensioner and my wife got me the Primo Rivera Pro clutch for Christmas that I'm installing this weekend. I told my wife that if Mike uses the Rivera clutch then that's the clutch I want. You're an awesome resource and I love all of your videos. THANKS!!!
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
Wow. That's very cool. You'll probably have to grind the inner leg of the M6 to level it off because the 71 inner primary is not flat on the bottom. I also bend the two outer tabs down on the bottom shim to level it off. Pay close attention to the instructions on the Pro clutch. Do exactly as they tell you. That includes the use of the shims to flatten the spring and the use of antisieze on the studs. The timing device will work fine as you have figured it. That is your advance timing mark, so take the RPM's up and check your timing. I use the timing light through the inspection cover hole.

Not really. Bend tabs accordingly on a bottom, thick shim in order to level the M-6 Tensioner. Pay attention to the instructions on the Pro clutch and you'll love it. On the Fischer Damper, You'll have to relieve some area inside the outer primary cover. You'll find the improvement on that damper to be small but fun. If you want to go seventy, go seventy-five, then back-off to seventy and notice the smoothness kick in. Oops. You may have to relieve some material from the inner primary. I hope my comments help you. You neglected to tell me what the bike is. They do differ, you know.

Going to install the M6 auto tensioner and the fisher compensator I have but wondering if you had to file down a tiny bit to the mounting hole boss on the inner and outer primary cover? The fisher just touches the cases and seems like I can just shave off a bit on the cases with a file and would be good. I've never seen any information on what the timing setting is for dual plug heads nor how to set that timing. Years ago and lacking information I just set the timing for stock using the hole in the engine case but it was always spitting through the carb. Do you know what the timing setting should be as well as how to set it or a source for this information? I've a modern timing light that allows varying the timing with the light.

@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are a lot of parts involved: The inner and outer primary housings, the original type chain drive with the starter ring on the clutch basket, and the chain tensioner. You will need a transmission case with the ears for mounting the inner primary and the correct length mainshaft in the transmission. You will then need the starter with it's drive and mounting bracket. All of the fittings for the oil lines required for the primary and the solenoid with it's related hardware. A powerful battery is necessary. It's a long list. We do this stuff as it comes up, but I don't see it happening in the near future. I wish we could do everything we're asked. This is not unreasonable, just quite a few parts. Since this bike has been modified, I don't know what you do or don't have. 1965 was the first year for electric starters on the Big Twin. I'm assuming this is a Panhead, rather than a Sportster, and I'm assuming it is in a stock frame.

I don't know if you're using a stock frame or, if you are, an aftermarket tank that is made for an electric starter. The frame was raised for the '65 to make space for the starter and the original tank and battery box. There's a lot of stuff to be considered here.

Tumbling the compensating sprocket on my 76 shovelhead. Referring to the manual on page 76 they reference the cover that goes over the compensating sprocket as the retainer / cover assembly. When I torque everything down I can still spin this with my hand. That doesn't seem to be right does it? Torking to over 100 ft pounds. I think it means the springs in the retainer are shot and I need a new one. I've been to the operation about four times so I'm concluding that the springs in my compensating sprocket are shot. Makes sense? As always appreciate your knowledgeable guidance.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it makes sense, but not likely. Make sure all of the assembly is there. If that big nut bottoms before the spring compresses, the compensator will still be loose. If your sprocket shaft came loose, the whole thing is spinning in the flywheel and you'll require a complete engine teardown. Was the bike running?

@@pacificmike9501 thanks. The engine bottom end has recently been completely rebuilt and has not been started since the rebuild. I trust the builder and there are many examples of his work which are all top quality. Although I have never had any work done by this individual before, I am confident in the work. The nut which threads on to the end of the crankshaft bottoms before the spring compresses. Therefore, I can turn the compensator by hand when torqued to 160 lb. It's down to a drip but it shouldn't leak at all. I plugged off the oil return hoses and such for factory oiling and put 6oz of straight 30 weight oil in a sealed up case. I had trans fluid in but it really leaked good with that in there. Now with motor oil it's much better but it still leaks a bit. I was thinking these aftermarket covers being totally covered in Chrome was the culprit. Chrome on the sealing surface is so slick the oil is seeping between the cover and gasket. I torqued it to 70 inch lbs and I'm down to a drip but it shouldn't leak at all!! I used sandpaper and roughed up the surface and I think it helped but still right at the dip or bottom point where the drain plug is it leaks. I see there are different style gaskets and mine matches the inner primary real nice but the outer cover not so much. It's a Lifeline inner and outer cover. Three times I've taken it off and resealed it but it still has a drip. Gasket and then with silicone, just silicone only and it leaks. This is quite annoying. I just rebuilt this motor and everywhere else is nice and dry. About 55 miles now. Motor is nice and quiet thanks to your countersunk tip on the rocker arm spacer I got all to .008 clearance. I'm really liking the sound of the motor it's much better than it was before I rebuilt it. I got the cylinders honed, put in new pistons, rings, adjusted rocker side clearance, torqued to 65 ft lbs on heads and retorqued after a couple heat cycles which it needed . A good 1/4 or tad more turn on the head bolts retorqueing. Made myself a pretty sweet motor it starts and idles so nice, pulls strong. Anyway that damn primary leak man what a pain. I put pure black silicone the last time on good clean parts. Even bead on both sides set, torqued after an hour set, 24 hour cure before adding fluid and it still has a drip!!! I still think it's the chrome surface but after I switched to 30 weight oil, sanded the surface it's down to a drip from a worse leak. Any suggestions? I know damn well these can be sealed without going to a belt drive... Maybe I need to put a little hair around it we used to say...😃.... ✌... Thanks in advance for your response I appreciate the conversation and advice brother...

@@pacificmike9501 I hear ya but I dont like the idea of that dirty oil circulating through the motor. Pieces of old clutch or if a tooth off the ring gear breaks off and gets pulled into your oil pump or motor that's not good. I've heard of it happening. Like you I've heard of guys running it stock too without issue. Still it should seal theres no reason why it shouldn't seal. Theres oil in it with the stock oiling as well however not 6 ozs at a time but still is sealed up tight. I'll keep messing with it I'm just not liking the factory dirty oil sucked back into the engine to me it's a bad design . It may work but it makes me cringe knowing what could get sucked into the motor...

I am late to the conversation, but my 2 cents, the oil returns from the primary and runs through the filter before it is returned to the tank. Also I have a 10 pass oil cooler, that should keep the oil supply in the primary cooler. It is on my 67 FLH rocker clutch. Of course that doesn’t have any effect on your chronic leak, I know that is frustrating.

Hi Mike, Quick question about clutch shells for shovels. I know there is a difference between a clutch shell for a '65 pan - '69 shovel versus a clutch shell for a '70 and up. The starter ring gear is located different . I believe the '65 - '69 the ring gear is stepped inward on the shell and the '70 and up is close to flush with the edge of the shell (towards the primary chain sprocket)...is this correct? Thanks.

I assume you mean a 1974 FX. It's cool. 1970-84 FX or FL would all be about the same. I do these things as they come up. I haven't needed to do one of those for quite a while (not since I reinstalled the motor in my Shovelhead). It's quite involved because the factory didn't make the inner primary opening large enough to remove the alternator rotor without removing the inner primary housing first. This makes it quite a lengthy procedure. You'll need to remove the starter solenoid, the starter and the entire primary drive. Then remove the inner primary housing and lastly, the alternator parts, first the rotor, then the stator. Be sure you disconnect the battery first.

@@pacificmike9501 thank you for my response and my apologies for my cryptic message. 100% sure I have all the parts. I've come to the conclusion that in this version of the shovelhead compensating sprocket that the retainer slash cover assembly which contains the spring is worn out. I bought the motorcycle used and discovered that it has 60 to 70,000 mi on it. I've also checked with resources knowledgeable in this area and we're all pretty much in agreement time for a new spring assembly. There's a lot of information available about what it sounds like and acts like when the compensating sprocket goes and the bike is assembled. There is very little information about how it feels when you actually assemble it. But I'm sure I should not be able to turn it with my hand when it is torqued to 150 ft pounds. The other one has been through a couple of major "maintenance cycles" (black). It's the black one that is being challenging right now. There are only six parts to the assembly. Both bikes appear to have exactly the same set of parts. But I have not measured the nut that is torqued. I am assembling both bikes at the same time. I recently assembled the primary drive system in the blue bike and all looks good. @@pacificmike9501 I'll get back out and look at it tomorrow. It's a 73 FLH. Bought it last November and in the process of replacing all gaskets and seals. Anyway the engine matches the frame serial number and the trans has the correct letter K stamped on it. Somebody's been into it there's quite a few aftermarket parts on it. The primary isn't stock it's a lifeline I think the name is on the chrome inner/outer case. When I pulled the outer off before I even did anything else you can clearly see it's been rubbing on it awhile . Before I adjusted the chain with a few shims it was rubbing on the case already. Now with the chain lined up , teeth in the middle there's about a quarter inch of space between the inner and outer cvr on the compensator. I'll get back out and look at it tomorrow. I did notice when I put the clutch basket on the hub assembly it wasn't flush . It stuck out a bit. So maybe something there is off. But looking with a small mirror at the backside of the hub it's against it all the way. Nut is on torqued down. I'll take it back off and look it all over again. Interesting though before i did anything to it I noticed it's been rubbing the case already on the compensator. I had to put three thick shims on it to get the chain centered. Something's got to be off... I'll let you know what I find... Thanks ...

@@pacificmike9501 Took it all back apart and looked it over good this morning. Hub was/is seated all the way. Starter ring gear is even with the edge of primary housing. What I said looked off is Normal actually it's just made that way. So I don't know what the deal is. I took all shims off and just added one to bring it over a bit more. I think it will be ok my cover fits now but just does however the gasket will give me a little extra clearance needed to be ok and seal. I'm using gaskacinch on my gaskets it's good stuff. Shouldn't have any leaks. I did away with the factory primary oiling and put plugs in the case. Left the chain oiler hose hanging shortened up as a breather. Going to add just enough oil to touch the ring gear to toss a little lube up on the chain. Clutch is a sifton dry clutch I believe. I cleaned up all the disks and plates so will see how it goes. I may get a set of wet/dry disks if I have and clutch issues. So I wonder how much difference there is between the factory primary case and this aftermarket lifeline case in depth? Maybe that's what it is I dunno. I was thinking about doing away with the compensator and just putting a gear on the motor. That would take care of my clearance issue. I ride my bikes easy im not a speed Demon anymore or ride hard at all I just cruise. Good sound, look and ride is all I'm about. Let all the others pass me by im good at my own pace... There is enough room. You'll need the sprocket and a longer primary chain. A much easier and less expensive way to go, would be to change your rear wheel sprocket to a 49, 48, or 47 tooth, shorten the rear chain as needed, and you're done and can easily experiment around with whatever combination you and your bike enjoy thee most.

Hi Mike, I know you are busy so thank you for your reply. I am sure you must have a Clymer or HD manual for Shovelheads and it is very clear there is a thrust washer as I said between the needle bearing in the starter shaft housing and the drive gear. Installing this TW looks to be a pain, but it is definitely the way the manuals show, along with J&P Cycle shows it as OEM 13501-65. It must help slow wear between the drive gear and housing. Your thoughts??
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 5 жыл бұрын
I think you got me. This one has me bothered. I've put an awful lot of those starter housings on. I was doing it before evos existed. But, I don't remember that thrust washer. I simply answered you from the top of my head. So, when you wrote back, I opened a parts manual,and there it was! So, I thought pretty hard about it and I don't have a housing loose to look at. Tomorrow, I'm going over to a buddy's house who might have one off. My thought is, "If I never installed a thrust washer on the inside of that housing, there must be one staked in there by the factory." I've replaced the needle bearing before. More will be revealed.
@ironearl69
@ironearl69 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I appreciate your reply. I think most people install without the thrust washer because it is far easier and can be done in place on the bike. I know in the manuals it says to stake it, but not sure how you would actually do that. Gravity is not your friend in this scenario. Please let me know what you come up with. It makes sense to have it in there though. I was going to assemble the starter housing and jackshaft away from the bike so I could install the jackshaft in a vertical position with the housing below it so I don't have to fight gravity. Likely take a bit to get the drive gear on top of the TW and needle bearing, but that is all I can come up with in my mind. Have you ever noticed any wear that could be attributed to the drive gear having excessive slop...maybe excessive gear wear or damage to the inside of the starter housing?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 5 жыл бұрын
I've never replaced that thrust washer, so I drew a blank. I don't have an extra starter housing to look at. But, if the factory staked it in, that's why we haven't had to replace them. I do remember replacing the bearing in the housing. If that thrust washer is staked in place, where's the problem? You insert the jackshaft from the outside with everything out of the way, especially, the solenoid. You wiggle it carefully to engage the gear inside the starter housing. Some of these operations are a little difficult. There's no gravity fight. You don't install the jackshaft off of the bike.
