Harley-Davidson Tried to Give Us Nice Things We Didn't Appreciate

Harley-Davidson tried to give us some really cool motorcycles but they didn't sell well during the production run only to be discontinued. Only after these bikes were discontinued years later did they become wildly popular and highly sought after. Not only did they become wildly popular but many took other models and built clones of these long gone models. The short production runs led to fewer bikes produced which has really driven up the price on some of these bikes as the years have gone by, especially if they are low miles and good condition. These models you don't want to pass on and some of the later models you for sure want to hold on to if you own one!

I have a 1993 Electra Glide Sport (FLHS)... a type of bike that became popular when it was changed (upgraded) into the Road King in 1994. Absolutely reliable Evo engine, I have it for 30 years now. Years ago I bought another Harley, an Anniversary 2003 Wide Glide... awesome bike! I don´t know why Harley stopped this absolutely classic type of chopper. I believe that these choppers with the long fork will become popular again very soon. And as three Harleys are better than two I bought a Sport Glide two months ago... and you are right: perfect tourer, also sporty cruiser. :)

A cousin of mine bought an '86 FXRS-Sp, or sport-edition. Dual-discs, air-assist narrow forks, stiffer springs and shocks, low "superbike'' bend handlebar. May have been only 1 or 2 years in the line-up. Actually handled pretty good. I helped him install a Supertrap 2 into 1, installed a cam, rejetted the carb. First Evo I ever worked on. The dumb thing about the "Slim" is that it's the exact same thing as the original Fat Boy! Well, OK, the back tire is one size fattter, whereas the current Fat Boy has a tire on the back ELEVEN sizes wider and 3 wider on the front. Unfortunately, the wheels are 18" so the tires on the Fat Boy look skinny from the side! The people running Harley now know nothing about motorcycles.

When I was finally able to afford my first HD in 2003 I searched everywhere for a used Dyna T-Sport, I wanted one bad. @@cjstemple321 Coming from a Sportster I was used to having a bulletproof cam chest. The cam chest in the twin cam is a mess. Cheap cam bearings that I had to swap out and faulty tensioners that I had to upgrade. I'm also not a fan of the wobbly cranks in the twin cams. Then for the life of me I don't understand why the drive belt is trapped behind the entire primary. I'll drive belt can be swapped out on a Sportster in 45 minutes. On a big twin you have to rip the entire primary drive off the bike to get the belt off. I also like how the primary and transmission on the Sportster are unitized so there's less places to leak and they share the same oil. The rubber mounts Sportster was better thought out than the rubber mount Dyna chassis. I had to add two additional chassis stabilizers to the Dyna chassis yet the rubber mount Sportster already has those additional stabilizers in place from the factory. And finally the weight. The Sportster is lighter and just seems more fun to ride.

I traded a 2018 Road King for a 2021 Sport Glide. Reason for doing so, that RK was getting to heavy to move around the garage. And wasn't sporty enough out in the twisties. The dealership put an excellent deal together for me, the Sport Glide had 800 miles on it. This bike is not to popular in the US, and I've been asked many times what model is it, more popular in Europe. The Sport Glide handles great on mountain back roads and on those long stright aways. I'm very happy with this platform and will be riding it for many years to come.

2 years ago when I wanted out of a 2 up touring bike since i ride alone now ... I traded in a paid for Limited for a 2008 Anniversary edition 1200 and a fat check. I think they had 5 on the Sporty... but I forget. 2 weeks ago I was wandering around a distant HD dealership in my sons town and found an older Road King I was interested in. They gave me 6k on the spot for the 2008 1200 which I thought was a lot... but my son went into that same dealer afterwards and they said they sold my bike the next day to the 1st guy who looked at it. Knowing they need to make some...did they sell it for 8k? No idea...but I know it was a special bike (#440/2000) and it was eye popping paint and chrome... that bike always got tons on love from people who didn't even ride and HD guys loved it too. I saw a video of the HD museum and that 2008 tank was on their special wall of tanks over the years... I don't regret getting rid of it for the 2007 Road King Custom though... the RK may not ever be a 'special bike'... but it's special to me for sure.

The Dyna S was only available in 2016 and 2017 with 2017 being the last production year of the Dyna. The Dyna S spawned the current soft-tail LRS and LRST models. The original owner of my 2018 Sport Glide modified it immediately for his 6' 4" height for touring. The forward pegs in addition to a 9" Gustaffson windscreen, Hogworks riding bar, HD top box on back, 6" risers with 2" pull backs and a hardwired in Garmin Zumo 660 LM GPS along with a Saddlemen Explorer seat made it a touring bike for him. He bought it in June 2018 and by August 2019 it had 12k miles on it. Trips from west coast to Tennesee and back August 2018 and again in July 2019, including a trip to the northwest on that way back. So, yes, he toured on it, a lot of miles in 14 months. I will probably will it to a family member, when I go. Love my Twisted Cherry Red version. With a 696# bike, the 107 is PLENTY. Just don't run it at 90-95 mph, I feel that's abusive on the motor, that kind of sustained load. Slow it down a bit.

Well? This is debatable. Ironhead Sportsters had been around for 20 years. The 1000cc models were light, fast, and reliable. And with a little bit of work they could be really fast. The AMF Shovelheads? Although these are my favorite motorcycles of all time I have to admit that they were heavy, slow, overheated, and had clunky transmissions. These are what I still ride but they do require allot of work.

Harley's biggest problem is that they have not made a new model bike in decades. They change the paint job and mag wheels on last years model and call it an all new model. There is an ocean on used, ultra low mileage Harleys for sale but not a any single cylinder beginners bikes or a bike that older riders can transition down to when they can no longer handle the 600lb to 900lb bikes now produced. Just imagine an 800cc single cylinder bobber that clears the scales at 500lbs. That would be something worth having! A newly designed motorcycle from Harley would be nice for a change!

LOL i'll write my replay as i watch, i worked for Harley via dealers from 73-2010, the 1st one in my opinion and the publics the dyna convertible was butt ugly, and most changed it to look more like a superglide. the T-sport would have done better with hard bags, the fairing people either loved it or hated it. the superglide was nothing NEW the dyna version harley made from 1991 to 2018 your dates are off because you are confusing the superglide custom FXDC with the FXD, at least your pics are confused, i owned several of them like the blue and yellow FXDC in your video i've owned a couple TC103s and didn't like them, went back to the 96ci. i agree with the switchback but it's funny many newer salesman think they are Road Kings, i went to NH's Seacoast HD when i was looking for a road king, and the salesman kept showing me switchbacks lol, the sportglide wasn't a dyna it was the new yamaha softail (harley bought the rights to yamaha's star line monoshock system when yamaha closed the star line)

@feloniousmonk3049 8 ай бұрын
Good to know about the Star Line monoshock rights bought from Yamaha. I'm here to tell you that the additional 40% lateral stiffness in the 2018 and newer Softail lineup with inverted forks makes it one very very good fun handling bike in the twisties. I don't think I'll ever let go of my Sport Glide. I don't particularly think the Mantis baby bat fairing is good looking, but it is somewhat functional. Whether or not it becomes collectable is irrelevant to me, I plan on running the wheels off of mine.

I feel like a huge part of it has to do with MSRP for new Harley's. When bikes get older and younger folk can afford them the word spreads and they get what they can afford. Most younger people can't afford a $30k bagger including myself. They were primarily an old man's cruiser. Now performance is big and those that can't afford it can now build on a budget. Same goes for the off-road community as well. Same story for the new generation

I can see that happening, the 72 is really hard to find now too! I bought my ex wife a 48, beautiful crushed pearl ice and blacked out. One of the best handling Harleys I ever road, she sold it after we divorced and blew the money. I should of taken it with me, what I got for being nice sadly.

Any springers especially bad boy and cross bones. Springers are gone for good because you can’t do ABS on one 😢. The XR1000 was a cool bike that should come back as a revolution based scrambler. I loved my Night Train but don’t think it was cancelled for sales. Harley decided they would rather sell black parts for softails and didn’t want to give them away for free on the trains. I keep expecting a CVO night train someday.

I could never afford a new Harley, but I did get to buy a new 2014 HD Fat Bob, and did all the "sporting" mods to it, not because it was trendy, but because I couldn't afford a new Road Glide. I'm glad that it's now trendy to have a "Dyna-sport" based touring bike. I always loved the "Heritage Classic" bike too. The 2007-2017 Fat Bob was unpopular too, but I bought a new 2014 with twin-cam 103 and added all the right stuff for touring and it's sweet now! It was a year-end model, dual front discs, ABS, and t me looked really cool. I recognized its potential and accessorized it as I went along. I'm getting up there in years so I think its my last HD. I added some Vance Hines pipes, had it "sport-tuned" got nice road tires, shocks and hard bags and it's even better than some of the bikes my friends ride. IMO. My bike is on par with any of them and then some! I live in California and last summer we made a run to Laughlin Nevada and back, and the bike was pure joy to ride! Despite the 115 degree heat, it was still a good trip. We did stop for cold beverages all along the way!

Great video Gixxerfoo! A few bikes I think should be on your list are the Bad Boy, Rocker & Rocker C and anything Springer. I don't understand why the Springers are holding their value so much more than the other bikes.
@fq7879
@fq7879 8 ай бұрын
1 reason why is that harley will not build springers anymore because they sold the rights to another company. That company does not want the liability required by HD to supply them. So no more springers from HD

The switchback probably won't ever get popular. The 110ci twin cam is the best twin cam. The 16-17 low rider s is holding steady around $15,000 for a low mileage clean one and many people think that's the best dyna ever made. The XR1200 is a bike that isnt ever discussed but is one of harleys best bikes. The bad boy and cross bones are a couple of the softail springer models that hold their value and sell quickly. The Vrod Destroyer even though it isnt street legal it will be highly sought after in the future.
