This is an outside the box approach to replacing the inner cam chain tensioner.
Lots of variations are possible when fabricating a tool. This is a simple approach that only requires some basic materials and welding ability.
Someone with a nice machine shop could produce a much nicer device but if they had a machine shop they would probably have a press and could remove the cams. Isn't life grand! !

Its definetly alittle more difficult getting it back on then it is getting it off... Also you have to be carefull not to over stretck the spring especially when putting it back on... But it does work awesome...

Buy a small arbor press at Harbor Freight for $50 to press cams in and out . It’ll come in handy in the future anyway. Change bearings and cam chain while you’re in there. May as well do a good job.

I'm sure a lot of TC owners (like me) would be interested in a tool like that. And a lot of service managers will hate it unless they have one.

I simply cut the spring on the tensioner under a towel then pulled it off. I need either a press to change the chain or just this wrench to put a new tensioner on. I bought a chain so I thought I would replace the old one.

ZIPPER978: H-D, could have chosen to retain Metal Gears to operate the two cams, as they used to do, in all previous, big Twin single cam engines, prior to introducing the TC engine in '99 and eliminated the need to replace PLASTIC tensioners in the first place. But, they chose to create more charges for labor and parts, instead by introducing, silent chain drives and tensioner pads.

What happens if you take the tensioners out and throw them away? A 350 chevy motor doesn't have a tensioner. The drive side of the cam chain should stay tight when the motor is running. Anybody ever done this?
@thmeju
@thmeju 5 жыл бұрын
Terrible idea man, chains will jump timing and you will grenade the motor in record time. Keep your chain tensioner!!

Yes life is Grand! This guy is awesome. I'm going to run out and buy a new Harley and a bed frame so I can make this repair. I'll bet his garage is full of well organized projects, WD-40, duct tape, 8-track tapes, and cold beer. He could build a fusion reactor out of a toaster.

These silent chain also stretch and affect valve/cam timing. Also, the flywheel assembly is only pressed together on all TWIN CAM engines, produced from 1999 to the present, and will twist out of true. The only solution to that problem is to tear the engine apart and take the flywheel assembly to a performance specialty shop to tear it down, check the connecting rods for out of roundness and have them re-honed and replace the bearings with oversized bearings to compensate, re-assembly the flywheel after the components are balanced, then have it dynamically trued on a truing stand and TIG-weld the crankpin to keep the flywheel from twisting out of true again and make sure the output and pinion shaft run out is at 0.001" or less. Once a stock flywheel is out of true, and the shaft run out hits, 0.003' as it "wobbles" with each revolution and miles on the engine, damage to the bushings, bearings, oil pump rotor, begins and just accelerates to the point where the engine self-destructs. TWINKIES also run extremely hot, as in heat, generation, due to the inadequate, stock oil pump what only puts out 3-8 psi at idle, close to zero oil pressure and so these engines have been known to catch a rider's pants legs on fire and the rider suffers, 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
