SO, today we tackle an age old question. Which franchise has the better protagonist? Pretty spicy topic, but I like to live dangerously anyway. So without further ado, let's dive into Harry Potter vs Percy Jackson.

I think the fact that Harry didn’t do anything to structurally change and fix the inherent flaws in the Wizarding world is a big black mark on his quality as a protagonist. Percy Jackson looked Zeus in the face and told him to make the gods pay child support

I prefer how pjo tackles prophecies. Throughout the series it’s stated that the great prophecy could still be about someone else (spoilers ahead); like Thalia, Nico or even Bianca if she’d lived, it makes Percy feel less chosen-oney

That Percy outright *_chooses_* to be the child of prophecy so as to not have Nico be burdened with it (see the questers all assembling on Olympus in TTC as the gods meet for the winter solstice) should also be noted.

I agree. The prophecies feel like they come more naturally in Percy Jackson. Especially in the end of The Last Olympian, (Spoiler Alert) when it's revealed that Percy isn't actually the hero who dies from the Great Prophecy. That works way better than the weird half explained ancient love magic/master of death thing that lets Harry come back to life in Deathly Hallows.

Important to note, Dumbledore did point out the importance of free will, that Harry could very well choose to ignore the prophecy, insisted many before him did not come true, that the only reason Harry will fulfil the prophecy is because he, as a person, can't NOT fulfil it. So... in other words, as Dumbledore so wisely stated: "You're setting too much store by the prophecy."

There are some other aspects of the book where PJO is just leaps and bounds better. One being that Percy is an unreliable narrator - he's an ADHD kid who's got low self-esteem and the brain of a teenage boy. His dad wants to talk to him about how he caused an earthquake and he thinks dad wants to talk about his first kiss. He constantly downplays his powers and it isn't until HoO that we see him from other characters pov - they describe him as fearsome, god-like, and everything that Percy doesn't see in himself. There's also the bit where it's clearly established that Harry is the chosen one, whereas with Percy there's an element of doubt. It's really interesting but he makes the decision to be te chosen one. His whole idea that being the chosen one sucks and he doesn't want some younger kid who he's already let down once before be the chosen one cuz it's too difficult shows how selfless he is. There's also how the books deal with abusive caretakers. The Dursley's disappear and we don't really know what happens to them, but they go on living their own lives I'm assuming. PJO shows that Percy's abusive step-dad getting turned to stone. There's also the fact about how after Harry wins the fight with Voldie, he just continues living life - the high school jock, marrying his high school sweetheart, becoming a magic cop. Whereas Percy tries to bring systemic change. He understands the villains pov and forces the gods to reconcile with their mistakes and claim their children. And the most compelling part of Percy's story is that it's not over. The HP series ends with the golden trio being adults, and sending their kids off to school. But, in PJO it's established that most demigods don't make it past their 20's. Even if Percy has won these big battles, there's always a risk that he may be found by a monster, and may not survive. That's what makes us root for him even more, cuz of how fragile everything seems!

Harry is an unreliable narrator as well. It's third person limited point of view, but we see 99% of the series from his point of view and are lead gently down the garden path several times, until both Harry and the reader get hit by a realisation/news.

Percy Jackson was always the Chosen One. When Thalia was mere hours away from turning 16, the Great Prophecy was nowhere close to coming true. Kronos wasn’t revived and Luke wasn’t ready to sacrifice himself, and Morpheus wasn’t ready to set the world to sleep. That alone proves that it was always Percy, if the name of the series didn’t prove it already. Furthermore, Harry Potter had much more emotional depth and symbolism. Harry felt loss over his years at Hogwarts and struggled with things like never knowing his parents and with dealing with his fame. Percy often glossed over his own struggles at the end of each book or used humor to avoid really delving into it. I just can’t take that as seriously tbh. Finally, Harry Potter had many more plot-contributing characters. How many Percy Jackson characters actually contributed to the plot? There was Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Tyson (sorta), Nico, and Luke. Nobody else really did all that much to aid in the overall conflict, and none of the side characters really got many achievements or scenes of their own. Contrast that with Harry Potter, which had characters like Luna speaking about loss and individuality, characters like Neville growing from insecurity to courage, others like Narcissa Malfoy choosing love over hate, and Severus Snape acting as a double agent in the entire series’ plot. Harry Potter is just superior all around. I love Percy Jackson, but the writing just doesn’t have nearly as much thought out into it.

@@Doomzdeh but thalia comes back. that's the whole point. thalia comes back and, even after she enters the hunters of artemis, we're never really sure if the 16 years is 16 years of life experience or 16 years physically. we're introduced to bianca and nico and neither of the hades kids really know their age. they assume they're around 14 and 10, but it's not until battle of the labyrinth that we get confirmation that they really are that age. percy used humor as a self defense mechanism and (those who use humor as well) could tell just how much he was suffering. he had no time to grieve, he's tired, and it's not until hoo where we see just how much it affects him outwardly. in hoo, he's described as having haunted eyes and he's overly afraid that everyone will die just like how so many died in the titan war. also, percy's an unreliable narrator, we know this and we see it countless times, because he's a teenager and he acts like one. percy jackson as a story also delves a lot into the feeling of trying so hard but never being able to achieve what you want. percy always wanted to be normal, to have good grades and to make his mom proud, but his adhd and dyslexia made it way too hard to function normally. annabeth wanted to be remembered and to be someone's first choice because she never was and, in a lot of cases, never will be (e.g. luke, her dad, thalia, etc.). there are many scenes in percy jackson where characters get their individuality. grover getting his life's dream (finding pan), but having to convince all of the other satyrs that pan is dead and he isn't coming back, clarisse learning that empathy and personal relationships don't make you any less of a warrior (silena, chris, even her respect for percy counts for this), etc. honestly, you really can't judge percy jackson as a series without reading heroes of olympus because they're basically the same story, the division was to be able to change the first person pov to multiple third person povs. this gets me to the last point: luke. voldemort was a shit villain and you can't deny it. what makes a good villain? a villain you can sympathize with and that seems human. voldemort had "reasons", but none of those are really understandable. it feels like there's just black/white in hp, while percy jackson and hoo delve into the grey area. luke did some horrible things and he planned the genocide of his own kind, but he was right to a certain point. the gods were never good parents and it's hard to give your entire life to someone who you know will never give two shits about you. that's why luke made such a good villain, because he made the protagonist doubt and reflect. i tried to just use more objective points but honestly harry potter as a narrator felt boring and very 2d, percy felt more flawed and more realistic. and rr's writing style is superior to jkr's.

In Harry Potter, we already know that the main character will win. The prophecy will end with only one. Of course, it will be the main character. However, in Percy Jackson, there is a chance the prophecy is not about Percy. Furthermore, the prophecies in Percy Jackson have some element of suspense. E.g. a friend betraying Percy in TLT, fail to save what matters most in the end. Also, Percy has gone through a lot more than Harry has ever gone through. He almost defeated Hades and Ares, he held up the FRICKIN SKY for a few seconds. He survived TARTARUS for gods sake! Percy Jackson vs Harry Potter is basically the Marvel vs DC war. Marvel/Harry Potter has weaker source material but better movies while DC/Percy Jackson has better source material but trash movies. Also, in Percy Jackson, you actually sort of side with the villain as Luke has an understandable motivation. The gods are irresponsible and are just d*cks. They don't even claim their own children. They also ruined a bunch of mortals' lives and did some messed up stuff. They are basically the superheroes in the boys. Edit : I may or may not have started a war in the comments

I u deter and your points, but to say percy has been through WAY more than Harry is purely false. Harry’s parents were murdered, he was raised by a horrible family surrounded by hate and distain. He was thrown into a world of which he had no knowledge of and was found to be incredibly famous and at some pointy was downright bullied in school, both muggle world and at Hogwarts. He fights Voldemort twice and wins as a 11/12 year old. He went through so much emotional trama in the 3rd book, such as with sirius being his parents murderer and his godfather as well as his struggles with the dementors, where he relived his worst moments. Even more in the 4th book watching cedric die and being bullied by half the school for being a champion. The 5th book was true emotional trauma. Drama with cho, his visions of Voldemort, etc. I could go on but i’m too lazy to, i just wanted to make a point.

He was forced to endure a horrible stepfather as he beat his mother behind closed doors from a young age. He held the weight of the sky and endured the curses of various foes from previous books in tartarus. I'm saying that Percy has way more physical and emotional damage compared to Harry. Not to mention, the prophecy supposedly said that he was about to die, and he went though a lot of pain during both wars, both mental and physical. Also, its not I u deter, its I deter you. Percy was also thrown into a world and learnt the harsh reality that the gods are all assholes

Yeah, I think it’s because percy’s and jason’s request doesn’t really solve the issue of the problems in HoO. In PJO the unclaimed demigods rebelled because they weren’t claimed or they didn’t have any cabins so percy started to fix the issue by building new cabins and request minimum of 12 year old claiming. But the main problems in HoO can be summarized in two. First is the gods sudden silenced without anything to give warning or help to the demigods about incoming threats, and second is the divide between roman and greek and yet not one of the request from the seven actually addresses this issue and just give more power to the gods which is kinda the reason why a lot of people don’t like blood of olympus

I read Harry Potter first, but I ended loving the Percy Jackson series when I read it. When I read the first Harry book, it was a bit hard for me to get through because I didn’t enjoy reading that much and the first chapter was through the perspective of Mr. Druesly for most of it, but when I read the first line of the Lightning Thief, I was hooked because of how it set up how Percy feels about his supernatural life. Also, I just feel that Percy is more relatable. Having trouble in school, feeling like an outsider, parent troubles, etc. They all make Percy feel relatable. And since he’s books are in first person perspective, we honestly get to know him a little better because it’s him telling us his thoughts and feelings. I also think that the story is better in the Percy Jackson books. The supporting characters are great as well, and the action is exciting. So, for me personally, I’m going to say Percy.
@ricremricrem2221

TL;DR: Basically HoO shows us that from Percy's perspective he is a goof who gets very lucky but from everyone else's perspective including some gods and excluding Piper (cuz she got insecure about her boyfriend) Percy is practically a god, an assurance of definite victory and someone not to be messed with lest you incur his wrath and spite. Also the added perspectives in HoO add so much to Percy as a character. In The Lost Hero, Percy and his previous adventures become sort of a myth to the three main characters of that book and we see the beginnings of how much Percy undersells himself when he is narrating to us. The next book SoN confirms that Percy sells himself way too short starting with his narration of his solo adventures with amnesia in which he is basically calling himself a bumbling buffoon, followed directly by Hazel's PoV in which she mistakes Percy for a god which is subsequently followed by him single handedly humiliating two Roman cohorts in their version of capture the flag which iirc leads directly to him throwing hands with Mars on sight surprising everyone there including Mars himself who I am pretty sure implies he respects Percy for it. The entire book is basically just Hazel and Frank being flabbergasted by Percy and how strategic and powerful he is as well as Percy being a mentor to both of them, all of which culminates in both Percy single handedly taking down an undead roman legion and basically humiliating one of the giants by himself while using a head as a weapon. Before this book we already know how good a leader and how powerful Percy is but during this book and the way he is described by others you realize that the guy is way beyond simply being a good leader or simply being powerful, he is the example to follow for modern demigods. Then there is HoH, my personal favorite in both series because it give us Percy from Annabeth's perspective and it is from her perspective that we explore his darker sides. We know that Percy is pretty cruel to his enemies (he helped petrify Gabe at 12 after all) but from her perspective we get to see just how cruel he can be and how powerful he actually is when he doesn't let his morals get in the way. He almost kills the goddess of misery with her own poison to which Annabeth is just terrified of, simply bc Percy overpowered a god, she watches him kill Arachne faster than she can see, and tank a bunch of curses for her and through all this Annabeth is just like "wtf I knew he was powerful and could be cruel but I never realized that it could be to this extent." And to me the magnum opus of Annabeth being surprised by Percy is his entire interaction with Bob, Annabeth knows Percy is very intelligent and a great tactician, she knows he undersells and underestimates himself in this regard. From Percy's perspective his interaction with Bob reads as him being nice to some weird kid and feeling somewhat bad for never visiting even though Bob considers him a friend. Percy attributes most of Bob's friendliness to him and Annabeth to Nico but admits to some strategic manipulation of his part during the book. Not enough to seem bad but just enough to give us a glimpse into Percy's manipulation. Then it switches into Annabeth's PoV in which she is realizing Percy is playing Bob like a fiddle in a very strategic way, she admits that she knew Percy was good but she hadn't realized he was this good, then it all culminates in Percy perfectly and strategically manipulate Bob into killing his brother. Annabeth is terrified by this even more so that it was so natural to Percy and that he more than likely didn't notice he did it. It's just so surprising to see Percy characterized in such a terrifying and awe inspiring way through Annabeth who is his closest friend and one of his oldest. This adds so much depth to Percy for both the audience and Annabeth while also adding so much more depth to Annabeth and the relationship between her and Percy. It also shows that the curse of Achilles wasn't what had Percy acting up during TLO and it was just a darker part of his personality that was showing through thanks to said curse. HoO and the subsequent series show just how much Percy is him for everyone else but himself, from his PoV he's an idiot who gets lucky some of the time, from the PoV of everyone else including most gods Percy is already a myth who if he joins the battle victory is all but assured no matter what is thrown at you. If you want something done and you want it done right you call on Percy. I seriously wonder if after all the havoc Percy and Annabeth caused in Tartarus the monsters tell stories about how dangerous Percy and Annabeth are and that Gods forbid you injure the blonde daughter of Athena in front of the son of Poseidon cuz if you thought they were dangerous together your in for a new one once the green eyed dark haired one finds out you injured the blonde and vice versa, specially after the curse stuff and Achlys stuff.

I think the conversation between Percy and Harry is an interesting one. Also while power scaling doesn’t really matter, Percy was shown in the Kane chronicle to either be resistant or impervious to at least Egyptian magic. Which I think is just a cool fact. Also we do actually get to spend time with Percy outside of the main 5 book, with the several short stories we’ve received. Plus the SoN, MoA and HoH in Heroes of Olympus do a really good job of showing a slightly older version of the character.

For me it's 100% Percy. Barring my personal dislike of JK Rowling, Percy is just more active as a hero and protagonist. A lot of things happen to Harry and he gets really lucky. He is also propped up by the probably too smart for her own good Hermione. Percy actually has to work towards defeating Chronos. And he's called out for being too arrogant and sure of himself. Rick Riordan also just does a lot more with the world beyond the 5 original series books. Percy helped to fight inequalities in the system, having felt like an outcast his entire life and even when he was first at Camp Half-Blood.

He was the only option for chosen one. It was always him. He’s the titular character; it was pretty obvious. Add in the fact that, in Titan’s Curse, as Thalia was mere hours away from turning 16, the Great Prophecy was nowhere near coming true. Kronos wasn’t revived, Luke wasn’t ready to sacrifice himself, Luke and Kronos weren’t bonded for this sacrifice to happen, and Morpheus hadn’t even been recruited by the Titans to put the world to sleep. Thalia should have been a viable option for the prophecy by your logic, but she clearly wasn’t. That proves it always referred to Percy, and the issue was that nobody knew that until it actually happened.

I'd say the world of Percy Jackson is better than the world of Harry Potter. At least with the sequel series. The sequel to PJO is "Heroes of Olympus" and it's one of my favorite series! The world and plot were set up in PJO and Percy is one of 7 main heroes, but he doesn't feel overshadowed he still progresses and grows, and the rest of the 7 have cool unique backstories, diverse backgrounds and awesome albites along with engaging personal story arc that flow well with the main plot. For Harry Potter it's sequel the Cursed child made Harry look hella bad, and the prequel series Fantastic Beast feels like continuity problems for the main Harry potter universe, and doesn't feel like they have any sort of plan. So yeah I love Percy & Harry but Percy succeed in building it's own universe

I would never be able to choose between the characters so this is for the series. I felt in Percy Jackson that the hero and the villain had a more compelling past than in Harry Potter. As charecters they both have their strengths, but I find myself relating more to Percy than to Harry. There's the joke about Harry been a stereotypical Gen X and Percy being more of a Millennial/Gen Z, but it's pretty accurate. The obvious example being when they learn that they're going to die. Obviously neither of them really die (or I guess Harry does but he comes back due to some questionable plot devices) but they're reactions to that information is pretty great. They both accept it, but Harry is more emotional and Percy is just like if I die, I die and moves on, but it's true in other cases too. Their relationships both with their main love interest (Ginny and Annabeth) and their brief prior relationship (Cho and Rachel) feel that way too. To me, Percy feels more human whereas Harry often just feels like a plot device in a lot of cases. I'm giving that to Percy. In terms of world building The Wizarding World is certainly more developed, but i don't think the lack of development is a negative for PJO. The whole idea is that this world of mythology exists within our own world, and the Wizarding World is more of a separate thing. They both handle that aspect near perfectly. If I had to pick, I'd give the edge to Harry Potter there though. From a story telling perspective, I'm going to give it to PJO. Percy feels like he's existing within a chain of events, where Harry feels like he's driving the story. In terms of power, all of the power in Percy Jackson is a bit scaled up from Harry Potter (seeing as we're dealing with literal gods) but id give them a pretty similar grade on that aspect. Percy's power is definitely greater in relation to the rest of the demigods than Harry's is to other wizards, but I sort of like that for Harry. He does have those conveniently placed bits of extraordinary power that only show up to get him out of what seems to be an inescapable scenario, but aside from that it's pretty good. Percy definitely does some stuff that seems a bit much, even for him (like exploding a volcano, nearly killing the goddess of misery by drowning her in her own poisons, ect.) but it never feels too out of place. It seems more like an extension of his already established power than a totally new thing that happens out of nowhere. I'll give Percy the edge on that one. In terms of the emotional investment you get from the books, it's hard to say. The character deaths from Harry Potter in particular feel a bit sadder to me. I'm not a super emotional person, but when characters like Dobby, Sirius, Dumbledore, Lupin, and Snape died, i3 felt it a lot more than I felt most of the deaths in Percy Jackson. A lot of them felt like they were forced emotion. You barely ever knew Selena, Beckendorf, Lee, Michael, or the other characters who died. Ethan, Luke, Bianca, and Zoe were maybe the closest, but you only knew Biance for about half a book and Zoe for just the one, and you spend most of the series hating Luke and Ethan anyway. The deaths in the later series (Bob, Damasen, Leo (for like a chapter), and Jason in particular) did hit a bit harder. But none of them were quite as emotional for me as the main deaths in Harry Potter. I think the secondary charecters (meaning outside of the protagonists' main groups) are more developed in Harry Potter. In Percy Jackson the other charecters are often just sort of labeled and not much more. Clarisse is a bully, Chiron is a wise mentor, the Stolls are pranksters, Katie hates the Stolls, ect. In Harry Potter we learn a lot more detail about Fred and George, Dumbledore, Lupin, Sirius, Malfoy, Snape, ect. I'm giving that one to Harry Potter. Overall, I think they're both great. When I want to relive my childhood for a bit with a nostalgic book, I do tend to gravitate more to Percy Jackson, but that's entirely personal and has less to do with the books themselves than it does for personal experience. That was the first book series I fell in love with entirely on my own. My father got me to read Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings (which to this day remains my favorite story in any form of media ever) but I found Percy Jackson on my own and I loved it just as much as the others. It was more of my own thing than something i was told I should read. Granted, my dad was right. Harry Potter was phenomenal and I loved every second of it. But Percy Jackson just had that special thing about it for me.

I agree! I feel as though the deaths in percy jackson don't have as much of an effect on the readers and even on other characters. It's been shown that Greek demigods don't generally live til an adult age, so much so that Percy sees the Romans thriving and having multigenerational families, he is shocked, even without any memory. This definitely tones down deaths, also we don't really see how it affects other characters because theyre kinda used to it. Everyone just cries or looks sad then moves on. The scenes someone gets frustrated or tired and does a cool power move, it's not usally about the death of anyone, more so the overall affect of how dangerous or scary or traumatic some event was/is (eg. Nico banishing Bruce, Percy destroying a glacier etc) Not sure exactly what it's like with the harry potter universe as I have only read some of the books and no movies but have seen loads of movie clips and scenes and people talking about it. Definitely seems like the deaths in harry potter are more significant though

I think the Wizarding World being more developed isn't really a good thing. The worldbuilding kinda makes too little sense. The number of wizards change drastically depending on your point of reference, the locations and number of wizarding schools are unrealistic (there should be several schools in India and China rather than having one school in Japan for Asia) and what is the point of taking a train to Hogwarts when you can use floo powder to travel most of the distance? These are just the holes in worldbuilding, I don't remember enough of the plot to talk about that. Percy Jackson is able to rationalise the secrecy of the magical world with the fact that mortals' minds will rationalise everything magical they see to fit their mundane normal. For Harry Potter, it's established muggles can see magic so how haven't they been found out yet? There are so many people, they're bound to be exposed.

@@mastertofu I agree to some extent, but I also think that in the Wizarding World's case, especially in the earlier books, it's supposed to not make much logical sense. I mean, the money makes literally no sense. 29 knuts to a sickle and 17 sickles to a galleon. That's just part of the whimsical nature of the Wizarding World, so I can't fault the story for a deliberate creative descision. As for why Muggles don't know about magic, there's a well established department in the Ministry of Magic that's sole purpose is to deal with Muggles who saw something the shouldn't have, as well as the International Statute of Secrecy that every magical community is covered by, so there is at least some level of explanation to that.

i honestly think that alternating between characters helped percy's story more then it didn't. the fact that we spend the first of the series (percy jackson and the gods of olympus) just from his point of view, how he struggles, how he doubts himself, then in the second series (the heroes of olympus) we see from other peoples points of view, talking about how he seems to do things effortlessly, to me, it just adds an extra layer to his character, and i would argue that through it all, they both have an equal amount of character development, and interpersonal relationships. in fact, of the entirety of both series, i think that of all the parallel characters (harry-percy, hermione-annabeth, dumbledore-chiron, Mr. D-Snape, etc). the only character J.k. did better then rick, was the Ron-grover character, and even then, it's still very close.

One of my issues with Harry is that even though we have him for a lot longer than Percy he doesn’t do half as much to actually change anything about his world for the better. Him being the chosen one/savior is literally only about defeating Riddle. Like just because he seated the bad guy does not mean nothing else is wrong! Versus with Percy we see how it’s less about defeating Kronos and more about protecting his family while actively saying “hey gods stop fucking things up, fix your shit or I’ll MAKE you fix it bitch. This seems to be the case of a lot of the PJO ships, the ones in the books is the one you'll like and want to ship. While in HP you won't get that a lot, most of the time people prefer to make up their own ships with the characters and don't care for the ones that are cannon. The only romance harry had was the failed one with cho and then he just realizes he loves ginny and they almost instantly become a couple. Part of the strife between fandoms is PJO has been called a HP knockoff for years, which has kept people from giving the books a try and may have had a hand in the terrible movie adaptation, so they lash out at the HP fandom as a response. Now yes both are pretty similar, without going over all of them I just lost that both main characters have the same hair, eyes, and skin color. But a lot of the comparisons are surface level, both have a lot of stuff different about them, like narration styles, plot etc. Both series have their own merit, charm and humor. The biggest issue came with the movies. The movie directors clearly saw PJO as a HP knockoff and clearly didn't have hopes in sequels, so they went out of their way to try to make it less like HP as much as possible which made the movie very different from the books and no one in the fandom liked it, and when they did get a sequel it was leagues worse. This kept new readers away from the books and studios away from rebooting the movies or giving it a TV show for years (Or animated movie/show. I personally would've preferred that). I get the PJO frustration, hell I feel the same but I don't agree with attacking fans of a different fandom who had no part in this nor power in it. I also don't agree with HP fans insulting PJO fans, if you don't like the series fine, just leave the fans out of it.

I think both series have interesting worlds and histories without the main characters. It's also interesting how easy it would be for a fan to imagine themselves in those worlds. (HP fan as a student in hogwarts, pjo fan as a demigod in either of the camps.) The pjo books that have short stories in them expand the world in a very interesting way as well. As a fan of a particular side character in pjo (Will Solace, head of apollo cabin and the head medic at 16), I've been really interested in the camp, and things the side characters are going through in the titan war for example. When some of the campers disappeared, dead or betraying their siblings and friends who they had known for a long time and percy was presumed dead what was the average camper feeling? And in the battle of manhattan, the battle at the bridge hit me hard the first time i read it.

I love Percy but it also needs to be said that harry potter fanfiction is so much better than percy jackson fanfiction (Manacled anyone?). I think it has to do with the fact that i only care about percy and the rest of the demigods, but i dont really care about Harry as a person. In the case of Harry Potter's world, i dont really care about who the main character is as long as the worldbuilding and plot is good, but i mostly enjoypercy jackson for the compelling characters and relationships

I think its better because the fandom has to pick up the slack from JKR. The HP universe is never really fleshed out, and the marauders esp aren’t. So the fandom creates their own stories that do what HP couldn’t. PJO (at least to me) does a great job of fleshing out the world and the characters, so there’s no need to create my own stories because PJO already did all of it. (I do love dark percy fics tho🤭Falling For You🔛🔝)

i so badly wish we’d gotten to see the everyday life of the characters in riordanverse. with harry, we had 6 books to watch the characters go to class, fight with teachers, get tangled in love triangles, etc. and that’s so interesting when you care about the characters and it’s well-written at the same time. with pjo, the characters are on quest literally all the time. and i’d honestly love to also watch everyone’s teenage drama rather than just “percy made a mess at a school, arrives at camp, finds out things suck, goes on on quest to fix them, succeeds, he’s back, end of book”. but then again, i don’t think it would be as interesting as with harry potter because of the differences in world-building. not much is happening at camp unless everything is awful. however, i stull think it’d be cool of maybe percy stayed there one time for a full year, maybe between sea of monsters and the battle of the labyrinth, so we can see more of his everyday life there. i mean, that year is covered by three books anyway. so we can see training, how they plan the future of the war, learn more about the other campers, etc.

Really interesting take! I always liked about Harry Potter that he needed to be very skilled AND extremely lucky, I think it adds to the realism. I didn´t think the Elder Wand twist came out of nowhere at all, it came out of his choice to pursue Horcuxes, not Hallows; to fight Voldemort instead of seeking power himself, out of trusting and being able to forgive Dumbledore.

It’s a lot more believable tbh than 12-year old Percy Jackson with maybe a week of sword practice defeating the literal God of War in a fight. I love PJO but this is the issue that I have with the series. They downplay the villains so much like how weak are these gods (yeah GODS) that they get their arses beaten by a 12 y/o ? (teenager in the later books) Percy feels like an OP protagonist while Harry is not that OP, he's lucky, yes, but not OP. Imagine if Harry doesn't have the "luck" (for example, getting help from other characters just in time to save himself), he would've died in the first year. Also, the villains in HP (Voldemort, death eaters, etc) feel like they really are capable to kill Harry anytime if he isn't lucky enough. Ain't no way Harry could've defeated them with a sword (or a spell in his case). Though, the villains in PJO have clearer and more relatable/reasonable motivation in my opinion.

I personally have to say Percy. As much as I loved the Harry Potter books (and oh how I did), to me, Percy is not only the better and more likable protagonist, but also just a more relatable character over all. Yes, we seem to know Harry better since things don't seem to happen around him as quickly as around Percy and so we have more time to get to know him, if you look at Percys reaction to certain events closely, especially in the HoO series, you realize that he also is affected by what's happening around him. He goes though lots and lots of trauma and just doesn't have time to cope so he has to live with the consequences. Also I personally just think Percy has the better character development throughout the series. Whilst yes, Harry does change throughout the books, to me it always seemed like the main thing going on with him was that he didn't like the fame he was exposed to and never will like it. For him to change his opinion about another character it seemed like that characters attributes had to be shoved in not only his but also the readers face. Percy on the other hand keeps his funny personality but obviously grows older throughout the books. His opinions also don't usually change as rapidly as Harrys but rather slowly (referring to the gods here). Anyways that's just my opinion and how I personally remember things happening.

I would like to say that Percy ultimately does have more time with the audience than Harry. He has the original five books and then he’s in 4 of the 5 Heroes of Olympus books plus he had those little short stories with the Kanes and that cameo in Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo and now there’s Chalice of the Gods. Just wanted to point out that Percy definitely has more time with the audience than Harry, but I pretty much agree with everything else.

I disagree with that. The HP universe is just the wizard world (which is small too! Just Hogwarts, Diagon alley, and that one town they go to sometimes.) But PJO is not only greek/roman demi-gods but also norse demi-gods and magicians! The Gods too! Even regular mortals are interesting, because some are clear sighted. And the world isn’t limited too 3 places, they actually go all over the world. And to Olympus, the Underworld, and Tartarus. There’s so much potential in the PJO universe and its used, there’s so many interesting stories in the PJO universe that never mention Percy/mention him rarely. (Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, The Sun and The Star, trials of Apollo, etc.) Do you see any of that in HP? The world of HP starts and stops with Harry, the Fandom makes the world interesting, but the canon does not.

I really don't like to compare, since they're both very interesting and likeable characters from my two favourite fandoms, but I prefer Percy because he is witty, and his fatal flaw is loyalty, which says a lot about him. Also, the fact that the 'best house is Gryffindor' means that Harry and 99% of the main characters have now got to be in Gryffindor, whereas Percy Jackson gets to be unique in a different way to Harry by being the son of Poseidon, yet not too special, as there are other kids of the big 3. I find Harry very likeable, but I feel like everyone expected him to be great from the start (bar the Dursleys) but Percy was expected to be the son of some minor god. Also, Harry needs a better sense of humour. This comment sounds like I dislike Harry Potter, which is very much incorrect. There are a lot of great things about Harry Potter, and a lot of downsides to Percy Jackson, I'm just pointing out the things that prove my point. Edit- I literally forgot about Percy giving up immortality for Annabeth-

Here’s the thing, I never read Harry Potter in its entirety because I got bored a few chapters in, like halfway. I’m obsessed with the PJO universe so I’m biased as hell and everything I say should be taken with a grain on salt. Now in my opinion from just the start of the two books, I like PJO better. Maybe it’s due to the less time and things have to be pushed out faster but the opening lines are iconic to me personally while I don’t remember practically anything about Harry Potter. The only thing I remember about it was there was a goblin or smth along the lines of it. Which yknow that’s what you learn in like English class, you have to have a good hook/topic sentence. PJO kills it for me every time. Also I think I don’t care how much of a deep character Harry is. Like yeah your diving into his character more which is good don’t get me wrong but if you don’t have a good world building, explanation or smth that isn’t a plot device then I don’t care how deep your character is. You should have both to be at the same level of interest. PJO is always mostly consistent with this having Percy be an actual person in the middle of godly shit while tryna figure out how to not die. He doesn’t get as much depth but I liked him having a consistent character and lines that match the story then just plot device after plot device.

6:44 About the Golden flames. According to Olivander (correct me if I’m wrong), when Harry and Voldemort had their duel in the graveyard, Harry’s wand absorbed some of Voldemort’s powers. So from that point if, specifically, Harry is pointing his wand at, specifically, Voldemort, it’ll produce these golden flames as a defense mechanism basically. (Again correct me if I’m wrong)

To correct you, it has this effect cause the core of the wands are feathers of the same phoenix, the pet of Dumblembore, so if Harry and Voldy fight with the wands it does this I think cause they don't wanna "hurt or fight" each other but the affect is to "rewind" spells and since Voldy uses a lot the death spell and doesn't cast magic in a long time, the "ghosts" of Cedric and Harry's parents are there. I don't like this and some other moments in the saga 'cause luck is used so much in these parts like this one

Not to say I don’t like Percy Jackson; I just find the humor to be too much like Marvel Humor. In defense of the heroes of Olympus series and what it does to Percy I understand not counting those as it’s mostly not in his perspective. However after spending 5 books in his head, suddenly he’s no where to be seen. But it’s not like he isn’t there, every part of when Jason, Piper, and Leo are in camp his shadow hangs over it all. It really paints 2 pictures, one of how the other characters talk and feel about him while he’s not around and two about how new characters feel towards someone larger than life that they’ve never met. Further more in the son of Neptune we see Percy’s perspective again, great to be back, but also Frank and Hazel. Which is very unique as it feels like how we could’ve seen Annabeth and Grover in the lightning thief. They’re meeting this dude for the first time and over the course of it all seeing through their eyes we can understand their emotions and feelings of why Percy draws others to him. We see through their eyes of both the good and bad of Percy which is SUPER interesting as from first person perspective in the first series all of his actions feel logical and justified, while from 3rd person he can be super scary. Love it. All in all I get why not include it in the discussion , but I think the Heroes of Olympus series paints a fuller and broader picture of Percy as a character.

I think most of your points are spot on. I've read both the books growing up and plan to continue to do so as I get older just for fun but understanding the time and context as well as who the story was written for is important too. Rowling's work was exploratory and born out of personal struggle, whereas Riordan's story was seemingly lighter and meant for his children. That may be reductive but that does play a factor into why the heroes are the way they are. I will always love both of them though. But in terms of worldbuilding, I would say that I rather enjoy the worldbuilding in Percy Jackson's as well. Visually, the Wizarding World is stronger since most of the setting and production was literally built from the ground up, whereas Riordan's world is mostly set in America making it easier to envision. However, he does add elements to it that I feel could have been portrayed in the movies much better (for example, besides Camp Half-Blood, there is the Roman Camp, the various tools, battle settings, and hidden worlds i.e. the Labrynth in the 4th book) and that's what I am hoping will shine through to the TV series as well. Thanks for the engaging video! So excited to see where the show goes! :)

I met two of my closest friends because one of them was reading Harry Potter to the other on the schoolyard. But Percy Jackson... the first time I took the first book into my hands was when I went to the frankfurter book convention with my mom when I was 11 or 12 and she wanted to browse on her own and sat me down at a stand with children books. Sadly that day you couldn't buy the books except if the author was there to sign them, but shortly after I got the books. Me having ADHD might be one of the reasons I just instantly loved Percy Jackson. It was just so relatable to me, finally someone who struggles with the same things I struggle with - and then even shown as something that gives you advantages. Idk if it is because I read the pro series after I read Harry Potter and so it is more fresh in memory even tho I read it like 2 years ago. For me, it just felt more relatable read the pro series and it is probably because of how it is told as Percy’s voice is just relatable. Also, like you said Percy’s powers seem more natural and devolved but Harry’s powers are kinda forced and tbh we barely got to see Harry’s power. I mean Hermione basically did all the spell casting for Harry so we never really saw the extent to Harry’s power unlike Percy’s in which every thing fits. Like Annabeth does all the planning and Percy plays it out with the help of Grover and Annabeth and they all basically have a part to play. There is much more I wanna say but ima just leave it here. Maybe the genre of demi gods just wasnt for me, but the world just wasnt as compelling as Harry Potter. Everyone swears Percy Jackson had more compelling world building, but Harry Potter is arguably much more flushed out. There are intricate games, yhe houses, full spell books, and entire cultures dedicated to the story. Harry Potter is also different from Percy in terms of how he moves his story. Harry Potter is a prophecy already self claimed due to his mim. Harey reacts to the story and world around him while Percy initiates many of his own. And personally, I found Harry to be more relatable, which in that sense made him a better protagonist for me. Harry was an everyday kid thrown into a fantastical world while Percy already felt like he was fufilling something, despite Harry literally beinf coined as the "chosen one." I havent read either of these franchises in a long time, so maybe one day ill pick up Percy and try again. But thats my two cents.

I love both Harry Potter and Percy Jackson equally and differently. Both are great protagonists in their own story. However, if I had to choose as my favorite protagonist I chose Harry Potter over Percy Jackson. Again I love them both, but on a personal level I find myself more related to Harry because he doesn't have both his parents in his life while Percy has his mom and eventually a good step-father, Paul Blofis. Plus, Harry is a much more flawed character than Percy, in my opinion. I don't care about the character’s power level. I care about the character’s personality and story.

One of the things I think is so compiling about Percy Jackson was he was like so many of us with dyslexia (I was in middle school and had my sister read the books to me) and ADHD. It was not just one but a group of kids who was like us. It gave us a hope that we can be more then our disability

When it comes to me personally I agreed with almost everything you said except the last part. I personally don't care much about the Wizarding world outside of Harry's story, I really tried to I tried reading the other books and watching the other movies or games but I just never really cared for them. When it comes to Percy's world I've read and loved or plan on reading everyone of them. Even books that are rarely mention him like the Magnus Chase books I've enjoyed and they still are part of that world🤔

6:36 Read the books bruh. "Master of Death" is just a myth. What saved Harry was nothing but the protection Lily gave her. The day Voldemort returned using Harry's blood in GoF, voldemort extended the protection (which Lily gave on that tragic night she died) and kept it inside her. And that protection guards Harry from Voldemort. This is what the protection does: It makes you invulnerable from Voldemort as long as you are with someone who shares the same blood as Lily's. And there was Lily which protected Harry when he was 1 year. And in rest of his life, Petunia did the work. And in the Forbidden Forest, Voldemort did the job. This is the very reason why Dumbledore sent Harry to die. He knew Harry will survive there from the 4th book

I personally think Harry Potter is better because there are so many more characters that Harry meets and befriends and I feel like there are so many more tiny details that complete the story and bring it full-circle. Also I haven’t finish the Percy Jackson series yet, which I think says a lot about the intriguing factor and that one thing that makes you just wanna read on. Don’t get me wrong tho I do love both series

I read Harry Potter first and I loved the books but reading Percy Jackson IN MY OPINION was much more interesting and fun. I thought the characters were better and I liked the amount of books and even the companion novels gave great stories and developed the characters more. Some side stories even play an important part of the main plot and the Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase series were also AMAZING. I understand your point of view as well because I also enjoyed the Harry Potter series.

I love both series and all, but my problem with Harry was how isolated he was. Apart from Ron and Hermione, Harry didn't really have any friends. The rest of the Weasley's we're just like your friend's siblings, no actual bonds, Luna wasn't really close like that, and that's it. At least with Percy, we see what more relationships, especially in HOO with the 7 staying friends

I prefer Percy. I find his humor more funny, and I understand him way more. His relationship dynamics really grow between the books and while some of it is in-between the books, it feels realistic. Harry on the other hand sometimes feels like just a body we are looking through the eyes of, and in book 5 I was just bored to death. Harry was fun and then became boring. His dynamic with Ron changes at times, but it's pretty much the same up until book 7. Same with Hermione. Its like the relationship is Stop-Go-Stop-Go. It doesn´t flow like Percy´s. When it comes to powers. Percy has to improve himself to survive, and he does. He didn´t practice sword fighting for one school year and learned the consequences. He learned that he had to constantly improve himself and not to take breaks from learning survival. But Harry only seemed to care about improving himself in the first four books, but then he just stagnated in power. He allows the power of love and luck to save him when he should have been pouring over books and shaking spells out of the adults around him. Percy tries to improve himself to survive, and Harry tries to improve himself but then takes the backseat and contemplates survival for 3 books.

I’ve been reading these comments, and I have some thoughts because I too think I am correct. In terms of who’s gone through more crap, Harry wins childhood trauma (things that happened before their respective series beginnings) but Percy definitely wins overall. I’m sorry, but nothing Harry went through compares to Tartarus. Not gonna happen. Put on top of that being told constantly and having the mindset that you won’t live to adulthood cause monsters will hunt you down before then? Or loosing 8 months of your life because your aunt wanted to prove a point? More likeable? Percy imho. I’ve always been a sucker for sarcastic and quippy, and that’s Percy’s specialty. But also when he gets serious, he gets DEADLY serious. I enjoy that as well. He’s a badass, and he knows it. Harry? He can do incredible things, but he rarely acknowledges the coolness of it, and like the video points out, it’s also often dumb luck.

For the reasons you listed is why I like HP more. Harry’s character is complex and feels REAL. A real person has anxty periods. Can be on a bad mood and dislikable. Can struggle. Does rely on luck sometimes. Is good at soMe things and bad at others. Has setbacks. Harry feels way more real so it’s easier to immerse in the story through him.

All I know is I've read the entire Percy Jackson series (including the Heroes of Olympus) several times: can read them twice a year. But I've only read Harry Potter once and I'm not sure if I want to reread anytime soon. I guess I just love the way Rick Riordan writes. Other books where "Percy" narrates are also top of my list (Greek Heroes and Greek gods, Demigod diaries)

Harry has more character than people say (actively pursuing insane bs, having a bad temper with hero syndrome and being rash, and poking around) but Percy is just more entertaining and funny. I remember reading both of their first books in like the same year and I just gravitated towards Percy more. He’s just that much more charming. Harry depends on bouncing off other characters while everyone else’s entertainment value in PJ is measured by how well they bounce off Percy and if they can keep up in the funny and charm department
