although the concept of fanfiction has existed for hundreds of years, it wasn't until more recently that we began to see it in the mainstream. today we decided to take a look at the fanfiction to film pipeline and why harry styles has made such an impact.

Harry Styles has been done dirty. Though I wasn't a fan of One Direction, it was weird that Harry was the love interest in every fanfiction that involved sexual situations while he was a teenager. Fanfiction itself isn't a bad thing, however, it becomes an issue when celebrity parasocial relationships goes way too far with celebrities who are underage. There have been plenty of celebrity fan fiction stories that are well-written, but 90% of them are popular because of how trash they are.

Not enough people realize how disturbing it is that people wrote graphic, inappropriate works about Harry Styles when he was seventeen. Imagine being a seventeen-year-old and finding out that strangers are writing about their gross, sexual fantasies involving you. It's a more commonplace scenario than we'd like to realize (i.e. an underage Natalie Portman receiving a letter from a fan detailing a rape fantasy) and I can't stress how disgusting it is.

I agree that adults should refrain from writing self insert rpf about teenaged celebrities, but I think the largest group of people writing 1D fic was most likely girls 11-18 tbh, which is a lot less creepy and a lot more just teens fantasizing. I think it’s the publishing houses choosing to publish and adapt this stuff and therefor push it to a wider audience rather than make them search it out themselves that’s more cringe

can you all IMAGINE if the After series was written by some dude about a teenaged Millie Bobby Brown or whoever, and that dude was now making millions of dollars having sexualized not only a teen girl, but a REAL LIFE HUMAN? my god the internet would shit itself. conversations about sexualizing teen girls are 100% necessary and valid, but I hate how people are so much more likely to turn a blind eye to women expressing similar thoughts toward men, as though women's sexuality is still so childish and fantastical as to be a non issue.

i had no idea about caroline flack's relationship with him when we was 17. now dont get me wrong, sadly a lot of celebs do not give a fuck about that sort of thing even with genders reversed. but surely enough folk would rightfully point out how predatory that is if it were a man in his 30's chasing a teenage girl. i hate this double standard of it somehow not being an issue, going as far to say the boys are lucky, when they have fully grown women going after them. i'm 32 right now and the thought of dating someone that young makes me sick to my stomach! i will never forgive these kinds of women who sexualise teenage boys and clump together in fandoms and justify this behaviour, it's fucking vile regardless if it's coming from women.

@@sarahwatts7152 absolutely. age gaps especially dont really mean much once you're into your late twenties/thirties onwards and are dating someone older. but seeing some people really toe the line with "jailbait", only dating 18 year olds just to avoid legal ramifications without questioning why you're still going after someone who is still technically a teen is very disturbing. it's also much easier for older peoole to groom teens because they dont have the life experience that the older adults do. thats when age gaps become bad when one is still that young.

Anna was 24 and harry was 19 when she wrote after, and harry was treated as a completely different character (even older) in the books, his face was probably the only thing that was borrowed, fan fictions and erotica are artistic expressions, and of course they can get problematic, but fiction about already popular people is neither uncommon nor inherently problematic, so stop shitting your pants over something that's not even an issue. The world isn't black and white, gender reversal of a situation doesn't work that way and the fanfic isn't inherently problematic, it's just a steamy fantasy. @@NikiPaprika

Nah it's diff now, harry styles quite literally dominated fanfictions and wattpad back then. While yes fanfics are still a huge thing today but everyone's in their own corner, there isn't any one "it-boy" who's just taken over (thank god cuz it was prob horrible for him) so it's disappointing but not surprising that it had this much impact even in the film industry and i honestly don't see it happening again. Like yes we're aware he's one of the most consistently successful artists of our age considering he's been in the spotlight 14 years and is still top 5 biggest artists today but it's actually insane to just witness the impact he had on many aspects of popculture. I am curious to see if it'd happen with more fanfics like bts tho, if it does then that means this really opened the gates of fanfic to films and idk how i feel about that lol.

9:15 I am gonna call another BS as far as Larry goes, as with many ships, the shippers are not in fact queer many times. For sure there are always queer young people who want to see representation and fall into shipping same-sex people, but it is as common if not more common to see straight women shipping male fictional characters or celebrities (very similar to what men fantasize with non-straight women in 🌽). It is another type of self-insert/coping and it's very easy to see this with K-pop groups, where same-sex ships are much more common, because of the type of fan service the members provide and are forced to provide by companies.

i was a larry for a long time. it was a lot of lgbt people myself included and it was presented to us by others in the fandom as them being victims and how we needed to show solidarity and support. if you were lgbt and didn't support them or buy into all the conspiracies you could be sent hate comments telling you you weren't really lgbt and equating you to being hateful. it was a nightmare and one of the reasons i was so scared to step out away from it. it was presented to us as our "duty" almost
@CompanyOfTheCat

@@promisemochi Oh, for sure there were many LGBT+ members, but I also had interacted with quite a lot of straight shippers back in the day. And even though there were queer people in these fandoms, they were never as aggressive, at least I had never interacted with THAT aggressive shipper of gay couples that are queer themselves, in various fandoms btw, not only Larry. Yes, some were problematic and queer, but attacking people outside of the fandom, bc of a meme or something (bc I was never a big 1D fan, but I was a chronically online teen😂), wasn't as common, at least in my experience. It is similar to this weird and unsettling phenomenon where many heavily problematic fanfics with teens were written by fully grown adults. Edit: Many times shipping gay (mostly men) couples, for young girls, is a form of coping as well. If the guy they find attractive is gay, then the reason they cannot be in a relationship with them is not the fact that they don't know them personally, or the age gap, or bc of their outer appearance, but because of something they cannot change: their sexuality.

@@CompanyOfTheCat very good points!! you bring up a lot of good things. i was very active in the fandom and had a different side of it on tumblr for example than others in other parts. another point i would like to tack on is back in the day during this time girls were so shamed if they saw their celebrity as hot or sexy. it was seen as objectifying to say "oh he's so hot!" a lot of young women in turn would use these ships to "safely" fantasize without being shamed. it removed themselves from the equation in a way.

On the topic of fanfiction, I find Sherlock Holmes and its adaptations fascinating. Since Sherlock Holmes is in the public domain, we can do whatever we want with him. Not just for fanfiction writing and publishing but for making movies and series of him as well. So technically, any Sherlock Holmes work that doesn’t strictly follow the original is a fan work such as fanfiction, a movie or an episode with a fanfiction script. On top of that, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the author of Sherlock Holmes) said, “You may marry him, murder him, or do anything you like to him”. Even though Sherlock Holmes fanfiction and adaptations can be absurd at times, it’s good that we have the author’s “blessing”.

As someone who’s written and read a couple of fanfics when I was in my teen years, this is my hot take: I think it’s completely fine to write stories about characters from an IP that you like (i.e. Harry Potter, Star Trek, etc.) cause at the end of the day, they aren’t an actual person. However, fanfic writers should leave real people out of it. I remember never understanding why there were so many stories written about an actor or a pop star that I liked at the time. I always thought they were kind of invasive, also put it this way: Would you like it if strangers wrote stories objectifying you and/or your friends, and writing verbatim or assumptions about stuff that happened in your personal life? No you wouldn’t! However, I do have a neutral stance when it comes to “original stories” that have a bit of a fanfic-leaning, where one of the characters was “inspired” by a celebrity (i.e. “The Idea of You” and “Grace and The Fever”). It can be done tastefully, just as long as no lines are crossed. Changing the name(s) of the celebrity-inspired character(s) isn’t really enough. If you’re copying verbatim on how the character looks and/or facts and rumors about stuff that happened in their personal life, that to me is a bit too much. I think the Harry Styles character in “The Idea of You” kind of crosses the line, since his looks and his personal life is described way too similarly to the real person.

When I first got into BTS a few years ago.. like 2017 think, cause that's when they won the bbmas, I believe.. anyway, I was a teenager in high school and found out about fanfics. I read a few about most of the members here on yt.. but I mostly read about Jungkook. I never liked anything too explicit though. As I was a minor, I couldn't really read them anyway cause it wasn't allowed. But there were some cases where the authors were able to sneak past the restrictions and I was able to read ALL of it. Not because I wanted to, but I was so far into the stories already that I felt I had to read it so I wouldn't miss anything. I mostly liked the stories that felt realistic.. well, not sci-fi or fantasy. Always a love-story, but with drama and suspense. Usually JK played the stereotypical bad boy who was selfish and had never been in real love until my character (y/n). Sometimes he plays the popular guy that every girl wants to date and every guy wants to be friends with, or a playboy who doesn't leave his bad habits behind until I walk into his life. I usually turn out to be the new girl or a long-lost friend from his childhood. Usually very kind and naive at times, but can be just as stubborn as him. Sometimes he gets into trouble.. for example, hanging out with the wrong crowd that includes dr**s and g**s, and I'm always there to watch out for him so he doesn't get hurt. He does the same for me a lot because he's not really a bad guy.. unless the author wants him to be a jack-A out of the blue to make my character storm off in tears.. which turns out to be for a reason because he doesn't want to see me get hurt by others who try to get to me because of him. I always loved these storylines.. Not because they were about JK, that doesn't really do anything for me.. but I just loved how the authors wrote such beautiful stories that made me feel so many emotions. I felt so many emotions for characters who aren't real. Most that I liked are gone now, either because the author left yt or it got deleted. There were a few times explicit scenes appeared and I always cringed.. like wth? Why is it important? The authors usually did it to make it seem more mature and not for kids, but really? I didn't need all those details about the sheets, weak knees, or whatever else they came up with.. like please, they could've just said we did it and move on. How simple is that? I felt so awkward even looking at pictures of him after I read them. It was just so weird. The endings were worth it though, but if I could erase those scenes, I would. Now it feels like Jk is acting out. He probably knows how hyper-se**alized he is compared to the other members. So instead of fighting it, he decided to give them what they wanted and that cost him a lot of fans who didn't agree with his behavior. Just because he's an adult and western artists sing about their se* lives doesn't mean he should too. But if he doesn't act like a man-wh**e, people will baby him and call him cute nicknames. I understand he's trying to show the world a mature image, but se* isn't cracked up to what everyone makes it seem. If anything, adults should be responsible and not do it unless they've committed to someone. One night stands aren't good for anyone. Not that he does it, but his lyrics are so gross. Even though he possibly had barely any input since it was all in English, it still wasn't my cup of tea. And then he acts like everyone who disapproves is out to destroy his career.. like how did he get that mindset? Criticism for his actions are different than wanting to see him fail. He's very talented and has so much to offer. Taking his clothes off and singing about getting it on will only attract a minority who doesn't actually care how his choices will affect him. All the people who groomed him since he was a teenager probably feel proud. 7 and 3D felt like a teen boy rebelling against social norms cause of his raging hormones whenever he sees a hot girl.

People are allowed to fantasize about the romantic notion of your favorite celebrity falling for li'l ol' average you. It gets messy when people start involving the actual people they write about. There defenetly are some amazing stories on Wattpad that would make good movies, and yet, Hollywood choses to adapt series like After, of all things. I don't think that Fanfiction is going away anytime soon, whatever we like it or not, they are a great way for writters to start practicing their writting and form an audience, they also are a way for young people to express themselves and interact with people that have similar interest. But on the topic of making fanfic about real people: Is weird, i totally agree that sexualizing a real person and writting them doing weird stuff because of a "fantasy" is extremely weird. People are allowed to have crushes on celebrities, but going as far as to writte a book and make monney out of it is so distespectful, is one thing to be inspired by a real life celebrity for a character and other completely diferent thing is to include said celebrity in your fanfic and just change their name (looking at you, After). The weirdest part to me is that you don't need to have Harry Styles levels of fame to have someone make fanfic of you.... I remember seen people make fanart/fanfic of ships between KZfaqrs, hell, i've seen people shipping the creators of famous cartoons between themselves. I was young when i saw that and i didn't really though a lot about it at the time, but now i remember seen it and i cringe so hard.

I write fanfiction but I have a strict rule for myself that I will never break. "Never write fanfiction about an actual living person" this includes live action shows with actors. If an actor could stumble upon it and read it, it's in the zone of my rule. I only write fanfiction about books and if that book gets turned into a movie or show after the fact, I make it very clear that my characters are strictly based off the books. Now I don't judge people who do write those kind of stories, but for me personally I feel like a living person should be able to concent being in someone's works, and the thought of the actor or living person I'm writing about somehow finding my story makes me feel gross and horrified.
@fusetunes

i feel similarly. there are live action characters that i enjoy together as part of a relationship or whatever, but i’m always very careful about what content i consume or make regarding them because they’re still technically tied to a real life person’s image and i personally would feel uncomfortable violating that boundary with anything more than the equivalent of like a middle school romance, lol.

As someone who has written and is currently writing RPF (of Kpop idols), I truly believe you deserve major respect. Although I obviously have set boundaries considering I’m writing about real people, I can’t deny the fact that so many “fans” completely disregard that. I was completely traumatised when I stumbled upon a fanfic KZfaq video where a Kpop idol **r worded** the female lead (I was probably 13 at the time). Unfortunately, the RPF community kind of normalises lack of boundaries and they just come up with the most fucked up scenerios they can think of (they need therapy).

I'm sorry but the last line in 18:17 is absolutely bonkers, fanfiction is absolutely still going strong 💪 just look at the surgence of the marauders fandom, they are basically a subfandom of Harry Potter about the characters from Harry's parents time including Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Regulus Black, it has even expanded to create the new ship of James Potter and Regulus Black, if people can come up with all those new ships and stories in a 30 yo fandom, then there's even more stuff for more established fandom

I haven't read the idea of you and I've heard it described as a "beautiful story" but something about it's premise makes me uncomfortable. I think it's because harry's tendency to date older women signals more "grooming trauma" alarm bells to me more than anything. just the fact that he was _seventeen_ dating a 30 year old and that from then this became a pattern for him should raise some red flags to you rather than inspire a wish fulfilment fantasy. whoever made the movie understood this because the age gap was changed just enough to feel comfortable. 24 rather than 20 feels much less…fetishistic? I'd actually be interested in seeing a story with that same premise that instead explored the trauma of a young pop star being exposed to older women who continuously cross boundaries and take advantage of him. otherwise it's giving aaron taylor johnson and his wife who is twice his age and almost definitely groomed him. I understand where the author was coming from with the whole "younger man desiring an older women" thing, but there was no reason to make the character 20. the character could have been 24-26 and the same idea could have been made. especially when the inspiration for the character is not even harry styles but a _young_ harry styles.

Not only is problematic for Harry's own personal life to be written like that (also when he was onyl a teen), but it's a Heterosexual problem, because most of the fanfictions (the most famous ones as well) were M/M but the ones made into books/movies are only straight couples. So a problem within a problem.

Imagine you were propelled into fame at the young age of 16, at the age of 17 you had a 34 year old you had a crush on bc that's what happens when you're a teenager, you find older people attractive. Said 34 year old "dates" you. Then at 19 you were linked to a 35 year old you "dated" and had a fling with at the x factor. From then on, you tell people quite explicitly that you're not dating every woman you're friends with. That whatever they see is work, you keep your private life private. Still, you are constantly oversexualized and made into a "womanizer" and people constantly tease you and classify you as someone who "goes after older women". Hell, even your band members defend you from comments about that. You are a feminist, someone who supports women, stands up for reproductive rights, you stand up for the lgbtq community and spread messages of love and acceptance and how everyone should be themselves and yet the media focuses on your dating history. A fanfiction about you and your band mate is made into an animated segment on a wildly popular series with a voice over with Zendaya (when you weren't even notified about this happening), not one but TWO movies are made based on fanfictions of you and there's not much you can do about any of it

But lets recap: His name starts with H He's British He's in a 5 member boyband group He has tattoos I MEAN COME ON

As someone who has been around fandoms for a long time and is relatively old in fandom years, this is my take: it is, for the most part, totally normal to have fantasies about real people and fictional characters - everyone has them to some extent. I even think it's okay to share those fantasies with others (including RPF) as long as A) it's very very clear to everyone involved that it is a fantasy that has no bearing on reality and B) you don't involve any real people in any way, shape, or form e.g. Harassing band members in real life who you think are secretly in a relationship! The stories and characters in RPF have nothing to do with that person in real life, so keep them out of it. What I think that means for mainstream fiction and films is that there needs to be a degree of separation - the celebrity inspiration should be dead, or it should obviously be based on lots of people, or even a public perception of a celebrity that is interesting to explore in fiction. Keep the fantasies about one person away from where that person might see them and feel harassed, uncomfortable, or upset about them!

Fanfiction about real people makes me really uncomfy. Even fanart that draws the fictional characters to look realistically like the actors makes me feel weird. It feels so unfair to them, like such an invasion of privacy. And I hate (like some of the clips you included) when talkshow hosts make the celebrities look at the fanart/read lines of the fanfiction to them. Stop making them respond to this on TV. It's like forcing a stalking victim to look at the stalker's creepy shrine to them and then expecting them to laugh at it good-naturedly in front of millions of people. Just because they're famous and everybody knows their name, doesn't mean they're fair game in this way. The fact that Harry Styles has to tolerate actors essentially playing over-sexualized versions of him and act like he's cool with it is messed up to me. I love fanfiction and fanart in general, but when it's about the characters, not the actors. Otherwise it feels creepy and exploitative.

Eh, I don't think fanfiction itself is the problem. Not even when it's about real people. As long as the readers understand the -fiction part and avoid projecting what's in the story onto the real people, it's an acquired taste, I guess. And tropey writing is something that will never disappear because it works a lot of the time. Most people want to be comforted with the expected, which is why the really unexpected stories make us feel awkward if not scared. The actual problem imo is that fandoms have become TOO comfortable with sharing fanfiction and ships with the "common folks", and even worse, with the celebrities that star in them. Like, why would you tag a celebrity online while commenting on a fanfiction? Or print that stuff and gift it to them? That's utter lunacy. But it checks out with the rest of contemporary fandoms' ludicrous behavior. I'm fine with fans but please keep that s*** to yourself kids! You're not the celebrity's friends and they don't want to read the crazy fantasies you write about them. Stay in your lane. You're not anyone's fan unless you respect them as a person before anything else.
