When setting up bedding for a new bin, new cardboard which is also referred to as a sterile bin is not suggested. You should always make your bedding in advance so it can inoculate and build up a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria by making a bedding mix that contains some beneficial bacteria. The cardboard should be soaked in water preferably for a few days. Cardboard that is only sprayed down or misted with water does not saturate through. Also the cardboard should be corrugated. The worms are after the starch-based glue that holds the straight sheets to the corrugated sheets together. That is absent in single layer cardboard. Soaking the cardboard turns this starch, which is one of their favorite foods, into a ready-to-eat form. Add in some coconut coir if you're using, or shredded office paper (but not peat moss, too acidic - too salty and not sustainable for our ecosystem) If you don't use coconut coir then add some chopped up leaves from your yard or a park or anywhere outside. As long as they are brown and dried they will do just fine. Then the most critical additive - a handful or two of worm castings which are loaded with bacteria. That is a must in preparing bedding that will go into a worm bin. Either a new bin or an existing bin. If it's a new bin such as you're doing in this video you would add more castings then if you just adding some bedding to an existing bin. Then add whatever you use for grit (powdered eggshells, powdered oyster shell, Crab Shell sand, etc.) - moistened to the consistency of a rung out sponge with rainwater, melted snow or tap water that has sat out for a few days and allow it to sit and inoculate. I also add a bit of powdered alfalfa meal and azomite rock dust to my bedding, but that isn't necessary. I just found it produces better results. Then let it sit, no less than 2 weeks before you're going to be using it. The longer the better. Bedding that is 6 months old has so much microflora in it that the worms just thrive. If you add them to a bin with fresh cardboard and no bacteria population they're going to suffer in reproduction and eating habits. It's a good idea to keep a big batch of this pre-made bedding on hand for adding to worm bins each time you feed them. Once you get bit by the worm bug, you can't stop lol. I started in 1987 and let's just say I have more than a few worm bins 🥰👍 I love your enthusiasm and positive perspective on this. Keep up the great work 👍

This should be mandatory amongst home owners. Just imagine the world where methane levels drop 25% or so?? My goodness. I’ve been vermicomposting for years and years and can attest that it’s the single most important ingredient in gardening. Many ways to do it also. Also mulching your beds/containers are essential. Love your enthusiasm and your work. Great job!! Much Aloha!!🙏🏼🤙🏼

I read elsewhere that if you have a stacking system you can put the ready to harvest tray on the top and the worms will move down to the layer below as you remove the overcast. It means you will not be able to weigh the put seems simpler as an ongoing system.

I always harvest too soon with my worm bins. Now I just focus on raising them and utilizing my kitchen waste first l. My bokashi system provides enough fertilizer for my vegetable garden.

@@arysetyo2317 I would suggest coco coir and brown construction-board card board shredding. I go with the kind that’s not shiny but rather somewhat fuzzy texture. thinking worms would have an easier time breaking down this type of bedding than the hard shiny kind. And Then mix in some grounded up egg shells and used coffee grinds. Add in some water to soften the bedding. Ring out all excess water.

If you make compost and have some handy you can use that as worm farm bedding and food at the same time that’s all I do and my worms go nuts, but if you want to shred paper and what not , knock your socks off lol. I make a lot of compost at home I love using my green waste and I also collect manure to add to it , makes awesome compost , when it’s almost done or is done use it for the worms they love it. Simples. 👍
