Has BG3 Changed The CRPG Genre?

BG3 is done, this we know but will BG3 change the way CPRGs are made and will many of the people who became acquainted with the genre by way of BG3 be open to trying out the more classical styles and forms of RPGs? Will others try to replicate the Larian style and format in future CRPGs or will there be a parting of ways as a new genre, the Larian- RPG or LRPG becomes the thing that most interests people?

I think you are right. Most people (myself included) who have always played CRPGs are ready to play whatever comes out next...and are less hung up on just BG3.

The thing that makes me sad about this video is that you know the corpos at Hasbro are slobbering at the mouth, you know that they'll farm out garbagewear, you know theyll subcontract a Baldurs Gate IV to a shady third party and it will cost $200 million for half the quality of BGIII with the devs all getting laid off while execs get their bonus and with the voice cast reprising their roles coming out on X 3 months after the debacle to go 'yeah idk wtf happened with this other studio, they ain't Larian' Maybe time will prove me wrong but i doubt it

Correction: More than 15 million if we go by Swen's latest number. DOS2 sold around 7.5 million and he said BG3 sold double the numbers of DOS2. Also makes sense since it's still in the top 10 best selling games on Steam .

Lots of non-great stuff makes a stupid amount of money. Diablo immortal, a shit show, a travesty, horrible. Made tons of money though. If you want to look at "real" games instead then COD, Fifa, Madden, Assassin's creed, Far Cry and a plethora of other games makes stupid money too even when they make terrible games between mediocre ones at best.

@@PowerSenpai historically this was true, many of these are now seeing the monetization well run dry. It's not because of the topline - the games bring in lots of cash. It's because the horrible mismanagement leads to a disaster at the company's bottom line - it's why we're now seeing huge layoffs in the video game industry. They can't manage what they bring in because they're so obsessed with short term profits they mismanage the shit out of their resources.

I agree BG3 is a unique CRPG, and it may not persuade players to try games from other developers. For me, the CRPG is the classic game style I most prefer, and the medieval fantasy setting is what I want to play. I'm hopeful Larian continues in the genre. I'm open to other developers, Indie and Mega, I played Solasta and liked it. It just depends on the game, I'm more selective these days.

I might try Dragon's Dogma 2 if it goes on sale for 75% off. Too many things about that game that I don't care for, performance issues and low frame rates, only one character and it's an ARPG which isn't really my cup-of-tea. I'm guessing Elden Ring is the gold standard for ARPG's, but I don't have it and have never played it. @@Bulsara777

One thing I'm looking forward to seeing in the future is hybrids. Games closer to more classic Crpgs but which are inspired by the advances made by BG3 to the genre. Also, I just started my first run of Tyranny and I can't help but dream of a sequel to this game with the cinematic level of BG3. It would be glorious !

I think that you are right in some aspects. I am not a DnD fan, as it seems so many of the BG3 fans are. I had often played CRPGs though, but more in the Xcom sort of vein. As it happens it was my searching for an Xcom/chimera squad type game that led me to BG3. And I wanted something with a story, with characters, and with a turn-based mechanic. But not all CRPGs offer that. In the meantime I play other types of games, Town builders, Railway network sims, Factorio etc. Yes Larian have secured the next sale with me already. I just hope that it is a good Sci-fi CRPG, that would be perfect. Until then I keep playing BG3.

The market is different to when Bioware grew huge in xbox era. If you are attracting young newcomers today, being on the big TV and being a simplified controller game isn't the right path. You have to be on PC, or touchscreen, and you need social features like coop. People getting hung up on full voice acting are missing the new wave. Is Lethal Company fully voice acted?

changed? yes expectations have been increased forever with the staggering detail to production value, is the industry capable to deliver the same peak in the CRPG genre? no not even close, we'll not see another CRPG come even close to it in the next 10 years which is in time for larian next project. new and even classic CRPG devs cant even imagine the scale. Sure pathfinder is wider like way wider with 6 acts but BG3 act 3? atleast an decade ahead in tech.

one thing bg3 definitely without a doubt proved is that the absolutely asinine corpo idea of using a "soft reboot" naming convention (god of war which is actually just god of war 4, dmc: devil may cry which is... a dmc reboot/spinoff that should've had an extra word in its title to denote that or something) is absolutely not needed for a game in a preexisting series to succeed to audiences that have never and likely will never play the previous entries

It would be great if it did change it, but that is going to take a few years. If ya go way back to games like Zork, Ultima, BardsTale then abit more modern Morrowwind, Mass Effect, DOA, Skyrim, Witcher3....All of the affore mentioned and that is only those that come to mind while writing this.....Up'ed the antie in there respective Genre, as BG3 truly did for Turn-based. I guess time will only tell. Peace

Baldurs Gate 3 was Allowed to be 'successful', for whatever reason. There are no differences between the Golden Globes, for example, and the Game of the Year. Likewise, similarly to how absolutely abysmal movies are hyped up and given awards, so to was BG3 hyped and sold to the playdough heads of the modern world. OBVIOUSLY, BG3 was not an Abysmal game by any means, however, it wasn't game of the year. It was artificially hyped. It ticked all the boxes of 'the woke' and that, unfortunately, probably lent a lot to it's success. People won't want to hear that but it's the truth of our current western society. Larian did nothing new, nothing crazy. They set no examples bar the 'no micro-transactions' but that's just nonsense people say. They've changed nothing because they hardly reinvented the wheel and truth be told, BG3 has been largely forgotten about because the hype was artifical. Just like anything today, the masses AKA 'the locusts', are pointed at whichever field has been picked by their masters to devour and they fly to that field and gourge upon a crop that will bring them ZERO sustenance.. and then they move on. Personally I do not play Skyrim anymore and haven't done for years but that is an example of a game that hasn't been forgotten. It's unfortunate Larian snuck any of that crap within the background of development and in at the end of EA but that's irrelevant. Id personally just rather have played a dark medieval fantasy rather than a woked up chick-flick that was, at one stage, hyped up on the player being able to have relations between a bear and a gay elf.. waw. Actually a great game currently is Dragons Dogma 2. Story isn't necessarily the best but the game itself is fantastic. Just like the first game, they really nailed the Dark Medieval Fantasy setting and Capcom aren't even a western dev.. There's absolutely ZERO woke crap or real life politics influencing their game. You'll get lost in the exploring, the combat, the climbing on top of Giants and great flying beasts (Dragons included) and going at them with all you've got even whilst they take off into the air and/or you run out of puff.. the dungeons/mines. The scale. There's no loading screens, a genuine sandbox/openworld. The entire experience of gameplay and mechanics is class. Eventually it'll be forgotten about but honestly it deserves a ton more recognition than it currently has and should it receive such, who knows what could be made in the future. Anyway, Larian changed nothing, they copped out, wasted time, money and resource on injecting nonsense into their game likes snakes. I've not finished BG3 and probably never will because the soul was killed for me.
