I think Pep has redefined what control means. When Pep was in Barca, Bayern and for a number of seasons at City, it was unthinkable to think that the opponent would have more ball possession than Pep's team. But from some games last season to this season, especially in the CL against Bayern, we saw Bayern have more of the ball yet City ended up winning 3-0. So, the question becomes, who had more control of the game? Bayern or City? Not possession but control. If we go further back in the years, back in 2013 when a prime Barca team was heavily beaten by Bayern in the CL semi final on aggregate 7-0. Barca had a average of 63% possession in both legs while Bayern had an average of 37%. Barca had a lot more possession than Bayern but a lot less control. So, I don't associate possession with control everytime, however, possession can be used as a means of control. Possession can only be used as a means of control if the tactics among other things used are correct. Pep has also realized that ball possession does not necessarily equate to control. The game against Arsenal this season at the Emirates, City won 3-1 despite having only 40% possession. City had control while Arsenal had possession.

I think it’s because City are now just so good off the ball with their pressing that they don’t let the opposition breathe even when they’re out of possession, and ultimately they are still firmly in control of the game.

There's also the whole thing of how much he admires Roberto De Zerbi, who of course has been engineering counter attacks this season with Brighton, and that's what you could argue Pep did against Bayern.

@thuo1000

@@Dan847 Possession isn't useless as long as you have the right manager and right set of players to implement that system. Man City still averages the highest possession in most games. They only slightly alter their approach when facing similar possession-based teams like Arteta's Arsenal, Bayern Munich etc.

His ability to tinker with formation is one thing, but his ability to select players at the right times to lead the team is absolutely incredible. From Haaland to De Bruyne, from Mahrez to Foden, Rodri to Gundogan, Grealish and eventually to Bernardo Silva, his entire team stepped up at different times throughout the season to play pivotal roles in their treble. The icing on the cake was Stones' masterclass in the CL final, capping off one of the most impressive end of season runs in football history. Truly staggering stuff for the last 4 months.

It is a joke, but against the team that likes to defend and it is not very good on the ball, that might be the best tactic to win. You want to force your opponent to play with their weaknesses and if having possesion is not something they know how to do, then it might be the best way. How few years back Atletico would be great in big games against teams that liked possesion, but would struggle to beat Getafe in the league. Why? Because against weaker opponents they have to attack for a change and they become vulnerable on counters.
@noblehelium3794
@noblehelium3794 11 ай бұрын
@@marko6489 I mean, not really. The most the opponent can do with possession is score a goal, which only cancels out your goal. It's not American Football where you can have two possessions in a row with an onside kick, which leads to situations where teams would rather burn the clock to zero than score.

Great vid. I've followed so many teams in a myriad of different sports whose coaches have a 'philosophy' and will frustratingly not adapt their system to situations or personnel, often to the detriment of the team. It's so refreshing to see the top coach able to adapt and innovate, often times in-game. I remember once the college basketball team i followed were in a tough game in the NCAA tournament. The coach subbed off their best player- both for the season and in that game- because he always subbed off that player at that time, ignoring the situation (the player was the best on the court in a lose-and-you're-out tournament). They went on to lose the game.

Tifo: Thank you for the excellent analysis. It demonstrated the tactical approach of Guardiola and also the matching of his ideas to his player profiles. In response: Where do you think he can improve or increase flexibility of this approach? Addendum: It is a great shame when a good subject is dealt with and presented with skill and clarity of communication, and that subject is ignored by members of the audience who take it upon themselves their own private deputation to "holler hostility" and make "loaded statement" which are irrelevant to the subject which is delivered and is fascinating to watch and listen to. Maybe there is a technological solution to this problem of foolish people believing their voice is their brain?

Not if, when. Only a mediocre manager does ever think, "ok, I know what works, we're going to stay in this formation with this style of play forever". For a great manager, adaptation is the key. He has changed formations, styles and philosophies because players get injured, fall out of form, sold, bought, get in a purple patch, etc. The only constant in football is everything changes and people have to change with them.

Top coach but can he bring up Lutron town or get Stoke to win a UCL 😂 I don’t think even he could get England a trophy though. I’m just messin for whoever got in their feelings just now.

Joking aside, if pep wants international management, England should try to poach him cause he is never gonna manage Spain. (because of his pro-Catalan independence views)

I think you explained that he doesn’t break his rules. Control is about risk/ reward and decision making that measures that risk/reward. False 9s less likely to score, so more possession/ tiki taka is necessary. Proper 9 more likely to score, so directness is more appropriate. Classic risk/reward.

Guilty until proven innocent. Especially as they are bought by an Arsenal fan just before the title run in and the game with Arsenal. They waited ten tests to bring the charges, Ava just so happened to decide that was the right time m. Including the one about the grass being too long 😂

After 115 rules, 1 billion spent, 7 goes at the UCL without a sack, Haaland coming in, 1 failed final solely because of his tactics, Pep has won a Champions League! Greatest manager of all time because his teams knock the ball about a bit more than others.
