This is Rob Meyer's demonstration of the conversion of a Hasbro Interactive Voice Controlled R2-D2 to radio control. This conversion is useful if the normal electronics on the Hasbro R2 are no longer working or have been removed.

@mattybuggy ...After that, a bit of careful prying should get the dome to come loose (It is secured into the top of the body with something like double-sided foam tape. You might also need to pry the base of the dome away from the rear panel when removing it.) If you want to remove the dome from the rotation base, this can be done by accessing the dome screws through an access hole visible under to black rotation base...

This is amazing. I've recently bought the new 16" Thinkway Toys remote control R2, and I'm already wondering what I can do to it. The motors are annoyingly loud, and the remote is a horrible tank style control with a half second delay to all commands, and you need to stop in between any direction changes, which makes it almost impossible to point him in a particular direction. I'd love to do something like this to him and give him full direction and dome control. Maybe one day! (after I learn some electronics lol)

@mattybuggy ...If you slowly rotate the dome you should see the screws appear through the hole. If I recall correctly, if you remove the dome from the base you do not need to pry the whole assembly away from the body. Taoworm did a tutorial that covers the disassembly process. Good luck! Rob

How does this affect the motors in the R2 long term? The Interactive R2 has a pretty slow set speed, (which I assume is just by design, given the weight distribution on the unit) but how much faster could it really go without putting stress on the motors? The other thing I was curious about, is how the batteries should be wired. I'd think that there is a voltage limited inbetween the battery leads, and the receiver? I'm looking at modding one of these little guys, but there's not a whole lot of information out there on conversions, and I'd like to toy around with it a little bit. Awesome stuff, I hope you're doing well these days!

@mattybuggy You should not need to remove the dome to check the ribbon cable connections. They are soldered onto the board in the dome. If you want to check the other sensor connections, though, you would need to remove the dome. First you would need to remove the back of the body (I think it is six screws), then you will see two screws attached to a bracket that comes down from the dome base on each side. These would need to be removed...

Grat job! Are you using all the original battery power supplies or did you mod them also?

I love it, has anyone downloaded the code off the original hardware so we can upgrade R2 while keeping the original programming?

I have one like this and the wires inside the Dome got torn loose - they're the ones underneath that piece of plastic with the two bolt bolt and down but I don't know where they go back to their something like brown blue red and gray?

found one of these r2d2's at the flea market but it doesn't work. I opened it up and it looks very clean. no rust or corrosion. I'm trying to fix it up but I have no experience with electronics. how can I build this on my own!?

easiest solution, but not the best looking, is a gopro 3. mount it to your r2 anyway you can or want, and use the wireless option with your tablet or smart phone to view its POV with

How is R2?

Do some more searching online. Others have successfully added a cam into the radar eye portion of the dome.- Rob

Have you tried out EZ- Robot? I am building a couple robots now and there are a couple R2 units on the forum. My robot is iron man themed Jarvis 2000 if you would like to take a look.

Does anyone have the Sensor Array and Telescope from the 2002 version they don't want or need? I would buy it from you.

Sensor Array and Telescope? The Interactive R2-D2 only includes a single Periscope. Do you mean the Holoprojector and the Periscope? The holoprojector is the silver knob on the top of his dome, on one of the blue panels, and the Periscope is the two-piece attachment that goes on his left upper dome flap. I believe there are a few listings on ebay for them, but it does cost a little bit. I just recently purchased a replacement door panel, as well as a whole second R2 to possibly do a mod on. I'll take a look at ebay and leave some here. Here's one listing for a REAR holoprojector, but I'm sure you could get it to work in place of the top one. Might take a little gluing, or some fidelling. They appear to be very similar pieces.www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Hasbro-R2-D2-Interactive-Robot-PART-REAR-ILLUMINATING-LIGHT-HOUSING/382640691688?hash=item59172999e8:g:an8AAOSwanxf~~Fq As for the two Periscope assembly pieces, I'm not sure. Keep an eye on ebay, it'll show up eventually.

I’ve been looking at this simple solution as well. Let me know what you come up with.
