The city of Belur is situated on the banks of Yagachi River in the Hassan district of South Karnataka. It is about 38 km from Hassan and 26 km from Chikmagalur. Belur was the early capital of the Hoysala Empire.
The main attraction in Belur is the Chennakesava temple, a Vishnu temple built in Belur in the 12th century.
It took 103 years to complete the construction of this temple. This temple has been built by incorporating sculptures and carvings for that purpose. It is now under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India.
