The Hasselblad X1DII was on my list of dream cameras. As a long time Hasselblad user, the idea of being able to add a digital version to my kit was super exciting and I was super thankful to Hasselblad for sending one over for me to try for a few weeks.

Give me this gorgeous Hasselblad any day over the hundreds of look-alike Nikons, Canons, Fujis, Sonys et al. The latter have hundreds of bells, whistles, menus, sub-menus, sub-sub-menus, and exponential numbers of options and combinations! I want the SQUARE and I want a minimalist, aesthetically pleasing camera that offers me ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings in the most straightforward form. Only the Hasselblad and the Leica do that. We agree on many, many points. Great review!

Hey there, thanks for your input on the X1D Mk ii. BTW the original Mk i was more expensive with a silver top plate and there was a variation to that one with an identifier of something like X1D 4119 that was a special edition that is all black. But the Mk ii is a second gen of the X1D prior to the X2D. The primary reasons why I'm considering the X1Dii are 1) Build Quality 2) Size and ergonomics 3) the Hasselblad Color Science 4) Image quality 5) and most importantly a special crop to mimic the Hasselblad XPan film camera specifically for landscape and with the new 28mm lens for the X system, the results would be incredible. PS.... Leaf shutter lenses allow flash sync at any shutter speed. Oh and if you switch to electronic shutter you can get shutter speeds faster than 2000 if you needed it. Cheers!

great review Benj, I’m a Fuji-X user and currently I’m looking for a Medium-Format camera for increase my product photography shot’s quality. I know that Fuji GF cameras are more affordable and lenses are cheaper, I used many times them but they look so bad and anonymous imho. GFX50S II/100S/100 for me are so worst talking about style and they lost one of the things that I loved most about Fuji cameras: the ISO&shutter dials. This camera looks so nice and I’m waiting to know if Hasselblad’s distribution will loan it to me for a medium-term time, I’m so curious about how it works. For sure it looks great and gives you a lot of satisfaction while using it, AF performances has never been a problem or a pro in my kind of photography.. My hopes are that this camera isn’t just a “style-exercise” or a pricy object, I would be sad to discover that. BTW your review is so interesting, “natural” and detailed (many youtubers cares only about duration just for the advertises) and I love the way you talk, it’s clear that you’re not fake. thanks a lot, happy holidays and stay safe. Peace, Mauro

I'd say the Hasselblad is the perfect studio camera or should be ideal for commercial work where each shot is prepared sometimes for 1 or two hours. It defintely is not the Leica Q which you can pick up and go in streetphotography. Ideally you have both and they are integrated in your own workflow and complement each other. That's what I went for. Thank you for this great review.

I started with the X1D II. Then with the 907 / CFV II was released this year (2020) - standard edition not the special moon edition, I decided to also acquire the 907. Initially I was informed delivery was December. So I shopped for a 500 CM, which came late in September, just before my 907 actually arrived. So now, I have the best all of all worlds. Straight film with the 500 CM, 500 CM and CFV II digital back, 907 with X lenses as well as the ability to use V series lenses, like the 80mm from the 500 CM, and finally the option with the X1D. My lenses range from 21, 30, 45, 45p (SUPER QUIET), 90, 120, 135 + 1.7 extender. Just a great pleasure to shoot with. Will probably add the two remaining primes, and maybe the X series zoom this year.

Leica, old Blads and that sexy new Blad, sometimes your videos are just porn and should be rated pegi18. I think the Blad is the most avant garde camera that came out in a lot of years. The design is... I have no words other than sexy. Like you said, polarizing. If they fix all the quirks and add a serious focus system it could be a killer.

@@benjhaisch I think that grip has something to do with it. I respect Fuji's choice to make thin cameras that are miles away from the chunky DSLR but at some point, the handling can be a problem. On the Xpro3 it's maah... Sometimes hard. On the GFX I imagine it can be a nightmare. The Blad with its nice handle could be held by one hand and I guess it makes a huge part in the better UX.

Between the image of quality and. What the tier of engineering that the hasselblad. Company is known for putting into their cameras systems. One would definitely not expect them. To produce a $5,700 plus tax rendition of a Canon elf camera. With Soo many flaws in function and lacking. The various types of newer technology period. But a camera that had them all. At the level that is worthy of the hasselblad name. All we can hope is for hasselblad. Catches up in the very near future. Or else we will see this proper design. Out in the years to come. Which the owners of Fujifilm have already. Deemed laughably ridiculous.

Every review I see of this camera theres always a complaint about the shutter sound and slow focus. These people just need to use an iPhone and their lives would be solved. Its almost like to make their reviews interesting they throw in these factors to show they "found" the weakness of this camera to make their reviews interesting while at the same time hoping Hasselblad would give them a free camera. This camera belong to enthusiasts who actually understand and appreciate cameras and not mall ninjas.

The more I watch videos and information about medium format, the more I realize how unnecessary it is for most people. Manipulating the files is a big pro. If you do high end commercial or gallery work there are some ups as well. But everything else... seeing the wedding photos: Nobody will print them huge enough that it is important. 99,9% won't see a difference between MF and FF (or even APS-C) watching those pictures. The shallow depth of field is great, but a F1.8, F1.4 or F1.2 is giving me the same options (for the real world use). I think that it's more about the very small "ups" that kind of leads to people with too much money to spend to say "it's go the best IQ so that's what I want!" and sure why not. So those kind of clients might be interested. But at the end of the day stuff like AF performance, FPS, etc. is much more important for most shoots. So I'd rather use a R5 or A7RIII/IV A9/II or A1. I feel like MF cameras - right now - are more of a philosophy. A bit like LEICA. They don't necessarily outperform other FF cameras (or even are just not as good in many areas), but they are more expensive and give you a "special feeling" about your equipment. Probably you also have kind of more meditative approach to photography (in German there is a great word: "entschleunigt" something like slowed down... but I don't know if there is a 1 to 1 translation). So for what it's worth, MF is great... but looking at price/performance for most people it's NOT the better choice (i.e. for most people who could buy them because they actually have that money ;-P ).

From all customers out there I guess the ones ignoring technical superiority are marrying couples. Just because this scenario is all about emotion. But to me, as the person sitting in front of the computer working the files, it makes a big difference having an APS-C or a full frame one. And I'd rather have a MF over a FF file.

No a FF lens with wider aperture is not the same as a larger format due to lens compression. That's the actual effect or what people call medium format look. A 65mm normal view on medium format vs 50mm FF, they're not the same due to the compression of the longer telephoto. It is not as obvious on the 50 megapixel sensor, more so on larger sensors or large format film. Using an 8x10 camera you are constantly fighting for depth of field because of the 300mm standard lens and it's compression, requiring narrower apertures. You can pseudo mimic this kind of impression on FF but it's a different look really. It looks good, don't get me wrong, but to me many super wide aperture lenses leave the subject looking like a cutout pasted onto a background. Depends on the lens design. Sigma 105 1.4 for example. To me it kills the 3 dimensionality of an image often and flattens it. Doesn't always work. Lens compression is always there. It's simply a different aesthetic for different tastes or purposes.
