The Woman in the sword video is Momo O'Brien, she is amazing! Her youtube channel is about immersive experiences (Theme parks, larp, interactive plays, themed fairs, etc) is one of my favorite youtube channels of all times!!! Also she talks a lot about fantasy content and play a lot of characters over her social media... so yeah she was not being realistic, she was playing into the dark fantasy romance fandom stereotypes.

as a certified freak: Just because I want to roleplay it, does not mean I actually want to have someone do it to me for real. Half the reason I have a fetish like that to begin with is because I'm reclaiming a story from my trauma. It gives me _control_ of my narrative. Taking that control out of the equation is only going to traumatise me more.

Yeah, there are plenty of people who have, for example, a non-consent kink that they play out in a safe environment with their partner. That doesn't mean they want the real thing to happen to them. That's the scary thing about dudes like this - they can't separate the fantasy from someone's actual desires.

Like, the entire point of role play is that you don’t have to worry about what the consequences would be if the scenario is real. I don’t think every person turned on by maid costumes actually wants to harass or assault their employees, but there’s something exciting about the scenario for lots and lots of people. There’s always more to dig into, but usually the entire POINT is to have something and not let it be that deep

i am horrified by the guy using Game of Thrones to prove his point, referencing a scene where two Dothraki men fight over the right to SA a woman, and implying that Daenerys "likes" this even though the show depicts her as being SAd by Drogo (and in the book she's THIRTEEN). That is so many red flags in one analogy

Also I never really got into GoT but from the bits and pieces pop culture has squeezed into my brain without me even trying, I'm pretty sure she was scared and unhappy the whole time and then there was some stockholm stuff going on. GoT is screwed up on purpose, the whole story seems to be almost a "How many messed up things can I do to these characters before they die or go insane?" competition, so using it as a guide on acceptable relationships is pretty funny, in a concerning way.

37:15 Wisdom from my Horse Girl days: that type of horse racing is called harness racing. The "carriage" is called a sulky. In harness racing, the horse does not gallop, it either trots (the two-beat gait where the horse's diagonal legs move together) or paces (a special two-beat gait that only certain horses can do, where the legs on the same side of the horse move together.) Sometimes trotting/pacing races happen with the jockey actually on the horse, but I think it's more common to do harness racing because the trot is famously uncomfortable to sit because it's so bouncy, probably even more so when the horses are going so fast. The breed of horse usually used in harness racing is called the Standardbred (in contrast with the breed of horse usually used in gallop races, the Thoroughbred.)

To give context on the dark triad, the biggest usage of this in mass culture is the diagnosis of serial killers. Personally, even that use I find weirdly fetishistic in the same way that people misunderstand the point of Patrick Bateman, where you’re supposed to hate him but it turns into a kind of admiration of him. Or the way that directors remark that it’s impossible to make a truly anti-war movie, in that even the most stark depictions of graphic violence serves the ends of positive propaganda. In terms of manosphere stuff the general implication is kind of equivalent to the Jordan Peterson idea of femininity as derived from chaos. Women, in their chasing of and desiring of men, allegedly perform a kind of psychopathic value derivation of men and the social and economic status delivered to them as a result of the men they sleep with. Ironically, not so different from how many of the men who holds these beliefs think of women. Regardless, the point is that the general conception is that even the most evil man does not hold a candle to the least evil woman. Womanhood is defined by its leading of men away from greatness and the desire to leech off of others. Unsurprisingly, this also becomes used in racial and nationalistic contexts. the dark triad is a very ableist (specifically saneist) concept that is based on the idea that people with personality disorders are evil, violent, toxic, and dangerous. specifically, it frames people with antisocial & narcissistic personality disorder (and in general cluster b personality disorders) as threats who should be treated as something evil and almost subhuman. this is, you know, not true, and also a very violent stereotype. it’s used as a justification for equating a group of mental illnesses with violence and abuse, basically. it’s gross as fuck.

@@Jay7Rockauntreated mental illness/disorders is bad in general. cluster b or not, untreated people can be toxic and dangerous for a variety of reasons. like untreated ptsd can make vets terrible people to be around. that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve treatment and the opportunity to be a good person. most cluster b disorders are born from trauma, being traumatized doesn’t make you problematic. choosing to do nothing about it, does. (i am not talking about people who literally cannot access help, that’s a different issue)

@@reckless_herbthe diagnostic criteria for cluster b personality disorders are definitionally problematic. Problematic behaviours are what makes cluster b cluster b
@reckless_herb
@reckless_herb 4 ай бұрын
@@jbone877yes, that is the diagnostic criteria. but it’s problematic behavior, not a problematic person. a problematic person actively chooses to behave that way, i genuinely do not believe anyone would choose to have a cluster b disorder (if that was possible) even minimal research shows that they heavily negatively affect the person with the disorder, just as much, if not more than the people around them. a common discussion i’ve seen about narcissistic personality disorder specifically, is that narcissists don’t lack empathy, it’s that their trauma response trumps the empathy they have. the issue is when people act like when someone is diagnosed with cluster b, there is no chance of them being good people or treating others well. its hard to treat cluster b, but it isn’t impossible. it takes hard work, and a lot of trial and error, but it can be done. it can drastically improve the person with the disorders life; also improving how they treat others.
@endless_del
@endless_del 4 ай бұрын
it's true that folks in the cluster b category can be, and often are, "problematic", as you say. but does that mean they don't deserve empathy and respect? does having a "problematic" behavior pattern mean you'll be a bad person forever? should we hold people accountable for every action they've ever done in perpetuity, even if they do the work to minimize the harm their behavior causes? this is the issue i have with framing cluster b in the way people often do. EVERYONE has room to grow and learn as a person, regardless of mental illness or lack thereof. so extending the same grace to everyone, regardless of what they've done is what i believe in, so long as they've made the choice and put in the effort to atone for it and take accountability. if you are a victim of someone with a cluster b personality disorder, that is a different story, but it is your duty to judge the person-- not the disorder. it's up to you whether or not to forgive the individual if and when they seek help and get better, and it's absolutely okay to not let them into your lives ever again (and this should be known by them, too, because it's part of taking accountability) but you absolutely CANNOT frame the disorder itself as "problematic" because it contributes to stigma that makes people not reach out for help. which has the potential to create more victims.

2:20:00 Jordan is exactly right. This es the exact reason I got into these kinds of guys when I was in my early teens. I didn’t really understand social cues and how to navigate interactions and people that presented “rules” I saw as very helpful and useful. It did make me a bit of a shithead because I would essentially blame people for not following rules they didn’t know existed but I at the time lacked the ability to navigate things without them.

@@SmellyHam a big part of the issue is these people are making exact statements of “this is how things are. Things just are this way. Here’s how people work” etc they’re not “here’s how things tend to be or people usually react” etc. they’re hardline “this is the rule and if they break it they’re wrong actually” and the other issue is they’re usually not even accurate well considered points. It’s not true generalizations is rules for how I want things to work based off my narrow opinion of how the world should be.

The answer to "why do you need numbers" is autism. This is immediately recognizable to me as an autistic straight man trying to appeal to other autistic straight men who are confused by social cues they've memorized and their unhappiness and loneliness despite trying to follow those cues. Rules, number, and patterns are the key thing- if you trust cues from fiction instead, you'll be in trouble. This is a super common pitfall for a certain type of brain, because you realize the rules you've had to memorize aren't working and were always tpo fictional to work. All we have is rules, not insticts- that's the thing that makes social interaction so challenging.
