Have the Dallas Stars taken a massive step back?? A recap of curious day in Free Agency for Dallas

Locked On Stars

10 күн бұрын

On today's episode of Locked On Stars, we breakdown everything that went down on day one of Free Agency for the Dallas Stars. After buying out Ryan Suter and moving Chris Tanev who signed a six year deal with Toronto, the Stars had plenty of cap space to make some moves. However, those moves included right shot defensemen Matt Dumba, Illya Lubushkin and Brendan Smith on short term deals. GM Jim Nill would have loved for bigger names or talent, but was simply priced out on certain players. The Stars have glaring concerns on defense that do not feel effectively fixed by the moves yesterday and look to be a worse team today than they were a month ago. On the bright side, Dallas did ink great deals with forwards Sam Steel and Matt Duchene, plus a backup goaltender in Casey DeSmith after losing out on Scott Wedgewood who went to Nashville. It certainly is no time to panic, but the Stars will be asking a lot of players who have not had great seasons in recent memory to play big minutes next season.

Now that we have 2 new D's that will dish out hits, plus Benn; and add to that, our mix of old and young offense we will go deep in the playoffs again.

There's positives (Duchene and Steel staying), and immense negatives. It feels like the Stars aren't trying for this year and hoping for a cup in the future. Will they? I dunno. Feels like a second round exit.

What did the 113 points get us last year? Vegas and Colorado in the first two rounds? Maybe they are just looking at the playoffs in which we basically played 5 D the whole run. Not perfect but acting like D core was miles ahead of this at the beginning of last season is laughable

I wasnt happy either but i think people keep adding tanev like he was a stars player. We started last season with nils and jani on the right side, i think objectively our right side is better today than it was at the start of last season. Dumba and iyla are better players than both and we lost a 39 year old who could only play 14 a night. Sean walker is the same age as dumba and has been a plus player only once in his career, he's also less physical. Im a little confused why you guys think miro and harley will stick together. Theyre putting miro on his strong side. Miro-dumba, harley- lyubushkin, lindell- lundkvist. Thats definitely better than we started last season

I wouldn't say massive step back given all the weapons we have up front, but certainly they did not replace Suter/Tanev in terms of immediate benefits. However they did add some grit and physicality. It certainly is a bad day whenever you can't reach agreement with a star player after buying out a solid player to sign him. The DeSmith signing is an upgrade. The Stars have a third of their cap tied up in 4 players. The Tanev re-sign was always a huge gamble considering the way we got him.

The entire problem with the Stars in their own D was lack of physicality. Losing pucks on the boards and having players too slow to skate are where Edmonton took control. I don't like signing Dumba and Boosh and Smith however different players operate better or worse in different systems. Let's also not pretend that trade windows don't exist and that they don't effect the season. Nashville had a splashy day and they will be good but you're signing stamkos who has never played outside of Tampa and Marchessault has been long with Vegas and to expect them to just light up the league is typical free agency optimism. I think we missed out on big D men like Desgshairnais but it also depends on whether the player wants to go

At the end of the day, we needed warm bodies on the back end. We had 2 people under contract after buying out Suter. I'm ok with the Dumba deal. A little pricey for a reclaimtion project, but no term. The Ilya deal is the one I really hated because of the 3rd year. He should have been a 1 yr near league minimum deal. I'm shocked that Nils resigned, I expected him to sign elsewhere after not being tendered a QO.

I think everyone is questioning the money for Lyubushkin and Dumba. If we got both with a cap hit of $4 million then this was a decent pick up. $7 million seems excessive. This smacks of understanding how thin the team has been at defense. Who knows, many thought Duchene was a mediocre signing last year. I am of the mindset this team needed more hitters. They got it. Part of the reason they came up short against Edmonton was the lack of depth and how physical Vegas and Colorado were. Do like DeSmith coming in as a back up. Nothing against Wedgewood, but he wanted more and honestly he is a $1 million AAV goalie.
@bobk.995
@bobk.995 5 күн бұрын
Nill's best offer to Tanev was 3 years at $5M AAV. He was never going to offer more than a 3 year deal, and yet they still wasted time until the day before Free Agency on Tanev as their Plan A. That alone shows you how badly Nill misread the market. Nill whiffed on several other players before finally settling on Dumba and Lyubushkin as the best they could get for the money they had to spend. And they still overpaid, especially on Lyubushkin.

I feel like next year is going to be a rebuild year. It’s going to be very tough as a fan if Jim doesn’t find a good trade for a top defenseman to get us through playoffs. Do you think the same, or is there something I’m missing? I honestly think we lose a lot of good players next year, and we’ll be stuck with a lot of young players that can’t produce at a high level.

Joey, the guys we added played on shitty teams. They were asked to play upper 6 minutes that isn't needed in Dallas. Dumba is better than a 6 or 7. We needed to toughen up. Hintz playing with a broken finger without repercussions cannot stand. Price will paid now. Given the superstars we need to pay I'm fine with these guys. Make no mistake, if a team thought they could bully Dallas, and they did, that option is weaker today. I'd bet a dozen donuts DeBoer said something to Nill that sounded something like "we need more bad asses. Benn can't do it all". .

You already have 3 of your top 4 dmen, Bichsel will get a look this preseason, Nils is better than Hank. walker sucked for colorado in the playoffs. no way they should have given Tanev that contract, he'll never play a full season and won't see out that term.

Nils maybe better than Hank, but what gives you the confidence from the way he's been used here he's actually going to make an impact? They dropped 2 of the slowest skaters in the league and picked up 2 decent Dmen who have a lot of playoff experience. look at their advanced stats in the playoffs. Nils is better than people give him credit for and you have 3 young Dmen knocking on the door. Lets see if Bichsel gets a 9 game tryout at the NHL level.

Oiler fan here. Hard to believe, considering the chemistry and depth the Stars had in the 2023 2024 season Dallas was a sleep at the wheel for July 1. We got Jeff Skinner and Arvidsson, big Josh Brown, Henrique, resigned all our core players including our killer 3rd line and best power play line and best penalty kill line in the league. I'm guessing all the Edmonton signings had to do with Jeff Jackson being a super agent to the super stars. However Jackson got it all done it was an impressive body of work.. Oiler fans are super happy and excited to get 2024 2025 going.

I agree something was off. It feels like maybe these were his C choices. Yesterday was like a piranha feeding frenzy with Free Agents. Maybe Nill freaked out because his first choices were taken? I don’t know. If that’s the case though, he should have stepped back, taken a breather. Done more research and come back today. I guarantee every one of the guys we snatched up (new players, not re-signs) would have still been available today. Maybe he would have even noticed some better options or at least signed these people for one year not two or three and less money. People using the Nills was GM of the year two years in a row immunity card need to wake up. Everyone makes mistakes and people have to be dense not to see Nill did in fact make some mistakes. I love the Stars and will support them even if they don’t do well. Realistically, this will probably be a rebuild year. I hope I’m wrong.
