The attitude that any conversation about Jesus is a good thing is just absolutely false. One of the biggest hurdles to evangelism in our culture is the plethora of lies, distortions, and mis-characterizations of who Jesus is and what He taught. I'm really surprised and disappointed Sean McDowell did not push back on this. The presentation of Jesus in these ads is perfectly in line with the false progressive narratives I have heard him dispute over and over again.

To me the "He Gets Us" along with the visuals in the ads sort of implies that Jesus accepts us just as we are. We are not required to repent, to change. We are not required to forsake our ways, take up the cross and follow Jesus.

That’s the problem with American evangelical Christianity… there’s an idea that we have to believe, belong, become… Jesus ran his ministry saying, “belong, believe, become.” How can we ask people to know Jesus and adhere to his ideals without giving them a chance to see them and understand Him?

From the ‘He Gets Us’ website - ‘He Gets Us is a diverse group of Jesus followers with a wide variety of faith journeys and lived experiences. Our work represents the input from Christians who believe that Jesus is the son of God as well as many others who, though not Christians, share a deep admiration for the man that Jesus was, and we are deeply inspired and curious to explore his story.’ From Ed Stetzer at 17:48 in this interview - ‘Everybody in the campaign believes in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus; believes in the divinity of Christ and more.’ Explain?

I don't have a problem with them. It is a campaign. They are not a church teaching doctrine. To me it appears that this group is just trying to get people's attention and their message is love for one another. Their website encourages people to learn the teachings of Jesus. I understand there are no specifics about salvation on their website and my guess is they are doing this intentionally and this is their way of promoting unity and brotherly love. I don't have a problem with that. If they were a church and they had no salvation message that would be different but they appear to be a group with a campaign of love based on some teachings from the Bible that may lead some to learn more about Jesus.

This is the ad I would run . . . Businessman sitting at his desk haunted by his life choices, clearly lacking "peace". Exhausted from the day, he gathers his stuff and heads for the elevator. Enters the elevator with a colleague who he knows to be a Christian. Turns to him and asks about Christianity. The Christian only has a short moment turns and says, "The execution of Jesus has given me peace with God." Doors open and they part ways, but the first guy is intrigued. I think I heard Stephen Baldwin share a similar story.

Ed Stetzer is one of the pioneers taking us, in what I believe, is the wrong direction. If he is still involved with "He Gets Us" which produced a horrendous commercial during the Superbowl he has gotten worse.

The campaign pushes what culture wants to believe about Jesus while leaving out what the culture doesn’t want to believe. It thrives on placing people in “oppressor” and “oppressed” groups based on social dynamics, race and culture. This campaign is nothing about the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. To me it’s nothing short of complete garbage!!!! Stop with the false gospel of social justice. Just tell the truth, tell the true gospel. We are all sinners in need of a Savior, and we are headed to hell without believing on Him and turning from our sin. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

Also, can we dispense with this notion that "no one in America knows who Jesus is," as if we are all living in North Korea or something. I really doubt that is the case. Minimally it is an exaggeration. We still have a whole heck of a lot of churches round these parts; even if attendance if dropping. I have this creeping suspicion that people know what, and who, they are rejecting.

All of this friendly fire has got me shaking my head. In my opinion the message I got was…radical love leads to radical transformation (which is how HE transformed the life of the woman at the well and Zacchaeus). I’ve never argued one person into a relationship with Jesus. They’ll know us by our love. (I’m well aware love does not mean acceptance).
@rguard52
@rguard52 2 ай бұрын
So what in the He Gets Us adds leaves you to the conclusion of Radical Transformation? Cause when I watch the adds I’m not seeing that. Instead I’m seeing he accepts us as we are. Which isn’t what the gospel portrays. As for arguing, the only arguments taking place on this page seem to be between Christian’s. Which in itself is healthy to lead to proper doctrine. I have yet to read anyone saying let’s make an argument add to win people over. They are just asking that the gospel be properly portrayed.

Guys, when you tell people "we are trying to steal past the watchful dragons," then you basically just undermined the whole campaign. When Lewis was writing there was no mass media to announce to the world exactly what he was trying to do. Moreover, if, as Sean posted recently on Twitter, most atheists in the country are young men, then I doubt you are reaching many young men with these types of commercials. These may be nice for old women and emotionally unstable girls (Swifties), but these ads are not doing much for the young men in the culture. Not only that, but when you portray each of the feet washers (or most of them) as clearly associated with the conservative political agenda, and each of those receiving a foot washing as associated with leftist or liberal political agendas, why not think that people are going to get upset about it? Did you consider, at all, how this might serve to further divide the church? Because I will tell you, that has obviously been one result. Finally, stop with the "it's only a campaign, not evangelism." Well, when you start hash-tagging Jesus' name, isn't that just evangelism? Wait to people actually open up the Bible and realize it was sinners (Luke 7:38) who washed Jesus feet, not the other way round, and that Jesus called at least one woman a "dog" (Matt 15:26). If anything this is just deceitful, giving people a false impression about the Jesus of the Bible.

I am a "deplorable clinging to my guns and religion" and I loved the ad. It saddens me that so many on the "religious right" miss the point of the ad and take it as a political message instead of rejoicing in the love that crosses barriers and bridges gaps. I guess that is why we are "losing" in the political arena, because we're less concerned about winning souls.

What exactly is bridge building? It’s an honest question. I’m not calling for animosity or ‘canceling’, but how do we ‘build bridges’ with those who at worst, are presenting a false picture of Jesus, and at best, an incomplete picture of Him? It is a campaign whose website broadly refers people to churches in their area with virtually no vetting of said churches. And it’s a campaign that undoubtedly promotes a social justice accomplishing, do-gooder, Joel Osteen-esque Jesus - which is a false Jesus. How exactly do we build a bridge with error?

@@jillh1543 These are good questions, Jill. The HGU ads can be used as conversation starters. Say you have a neighbor who saw the ads and was touched by what they saw. Maybe they haven't seen the compassionate side of Christianity before. They tell you they really liked the ads, and they ask you what you thought of them. You can say something like, "They were a good start, but incomplete. Let me tell you about the Jesus I know." Then, you can share the hope within you with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). Valid concerns have been raised about the campaign, but I've heard from non-Christian friends that they simply don't understand why Christians are so hostile toward one another, esp. in light of the fact that someone is trying to share the gospel. The HGU campaign can help us get the ball rolling. We can perhaps feel emboldened to invite our neighbors to our church. I've had friends come from Joel Osteen Jesus to the Jesus of the Bible. It's not impossible. The HGU gives us an opportunity to step into the conversation with our non-Christian friends who were interested in the ads. It opens the door to real conversation. I recognize not everyone will agree with me. But I've had fruitful conversations because of the ads. Christians are considering the way they present the gospel in their own lives. They are considering better alternatives. They are perhaps being encouraged for the first time to reach out to their non-Christian loved ones and share the gospel. The ads weren't for everyone, but I don't believe they can't be used as a bridge to present the true gospel narrative.

21:30 Ed is talking about the misconceptions of Jesus that the campaign is trying to correct, e.g. certain cultural expressions of Jesus or political parties. I think you can guess who he's thinking about when he describes those misconceptions. But what about the misconception of Jesus that he approves of your sin because he just loves everybody, or that he would march in a pride parade, or that he doesn't judge anyone? So it seems we can now determine the target audience: to you conservative, right-leaning Christians whom he says the campaign is "not for"...guess what? It is for you. And it's not for evangelism...it's a rebuke.

Sad, miss opportunity. He gets us sounds like he is a good buddy who sees us sinning and looks past it in order to be tolerant and so called loving. Actually, its He knows us.!!! He knows all our spots, blemishes and ugliness and because he loves us He made a way out for us thru the covering of Christ's blood on the cross. After this salvation and redemption, than yes we are to do the same loving things with a message of hope thru Jesus. This campaign takes away Christ's ultimate love and sacrifice and brings it down to what can I do for you to make you feel good. They have hidden and subverted Jesus deity and purpose. On that note, yes God can use anything to save people and this might bring someone to Christ if so I rejoice in that thought. This does allow us Christians an excellent talking point to slip into any conversation right now. I don't need someone like me, I need someone greater! I PS I did look the website over casually as a non believer would and nothing jumped out at me that was a salvation narrative. Sad.
