s02e04: I Want You More Than Anything in the World:
The coven questions Louis and Armand's special relationship; Claudia finds a new friend.
Based on Anne Rice's iconic novel, follow Louis de Pointe's epic story of love, blood and the perils of immortality, as told to the journalist Daniel Molloy.
Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, or simply Interview with the Vampire, is an American gothic horror television series created by Rolin Jones for AMC, based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. The series follows the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) who recounts his life with his maker Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) and teenage vampire Claudia (Bailey Bass and Delainey Hayles) to veteran journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), accompanied by ancient vampire Armand (Assad Zaman). The series embraces the homosexual elements of Rice's work, which are only insinuated in the 1994 film adaptation of the novel. It is the first television series in Rice's Immortal Universe.
Interview with the Vampire received a series order in June 2021, after AMC Networks had purchased the rights to intellectual property encompassing 18 of Rice's novels, primarily The Vampire Chronicles, in 2020. The series was renewed for an eight-episode second season in September 2022, ahead of the premiere of its first season on October 2, 2022.
The first season received critical acclaim, with praise going towards the writing, tone, costumes, soundtrack, production values, performances (particularly those of Anderson and Reid), and chemistry between the two actors.
Adapted from Anne Rice's 1976 gothic horror novel Interview with the Vampire, the series centers on the life story of vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, as told to journalist Daniel Molloy. An affluent black man in 1910s New Orleans, Louis is romanced and later made a vampire by the charismatic Lestat de Lioncourt. But the price of immortality is steep, and the relationship between Louis and Lestat is further complicated by the introduction of Lestat's newest fledgling, the teenage vampire Claudia.
Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac
Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt
Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy
Bailey Bass (season 1)[a] and Delainey Hayles (season 2)[6] as Claudia
Assad Zaman as Rashid/Armand[b]
Ben Daniels as Santiago (season 2)[7]
Recurring
Kalyne Coleman as Grace de Pointe du Lac, Louis's sister[8]
Rae Dawn Chong as Florence de Pointe du Lac, Louis's mother
Chris Stack as Thomas "Tom" Anderson, the owner of the Fair Play Saloon, an upscale brothel
Christian Robinson as Levi Freniere, Grace's new husband[9]
John DiMaggio as Alderman Fenwick, a businessman looking to take advantage of Louis
Jeff Pope as Finn O'Shea, one of Louis's enforcers
Dana Gourrier as Bricktop Williams, a prostitute who works for Louis
Maura Grace Athari as Antoinette, a blues singer who becomes romantically involved with Lestat[10]

For me, Lestat and Armand are the two sides of the same coin, while the first is more impulsive, dominant, the other is more calculating and submissive, and when I say this about Armand, it's not about being fragile, on contrary, he likes to feel needed by someone he wants, a reflection of his trauma. they both allow themselves to use their powers to abuse that desire. and both can be harmful.

That photograph arguement between Louis and Armand made a chill run down my spine because as the audience we know that something is wrong with Louis' memory (and Armand likely has something to do with it) and he's feeling so embarrassed, confused and vulnerable at that moment. Only for Armand to be like "are you sure about that?" when Louis tells him that he would have remembered being the one to mix someone else's photos with his. That's the first time I'm seeing Armand being overtly mean to Louis and it would be incredibly malicious if he's the one messing with Louis' memory

I love your reactions so much! And yes! The 1973 scenes with Armand are flashbacks, Daniel is remembering things. I think we're all in for some harrowing ride next week😂. I also miss Lestat so much😭. Also always remember that the Lestat we are seeing here is Louis' subconscious so everything he says is what Louis is thinking but won't say out loud. Yes. Maitre is something like Master. Louis went back into pimp mode and used Armand's real name to “run things”. And it seems that due to Armand's past, he submits to Louis. This was my favourite episode so far and i cannot wait for next week!

I need so much more Lestat at this point lol. I’m so excited for next week. We get to see Daniel as the young interviewer and find out exactly what Armand did to him. I’m hoping we also get to see more Santiago investigating and maybe interrogating Claudia somewhat as well.

it's interesting that almost all yt reactors see those flashes on Armand in Danialel's head and assume he's doing something to him right in that moment.. to me it was always clear it's flashes from the past, smth Daniel is remembering but I am familiar with books so that's probably why lol. I guess the show didn't make it as clear but next episode definitely will. so far this episode 2x04 was my absolute fave of the season, so much happened there. so many events, heartbreak, emotions, power plays etc.. and next one will be epic!!

Yeah I don’t think Armand is pushing Daniel at all to see these things at all either. They are memories merely breaking through after years of repression or concealment because of the stress Daniel is under and the mere presence of Armand. To me, this is illustrated best at the end. Daniel is having these flashbacks while Armand isn’t in the room and is very preoccupied in an argument with Louis.

im pretty sure Armand did make daniel forget what happened in that fisrt interview in san francisco however hes not the one making daniel remember, daniel has been getting flashes every single time he looks at armand like his brain is trying to tell him "wake up remember you know this man" also i think armand is so focused on louis and keeping the interview under control that hes not seeing the clear signs that whatver he did to daniel in the past is cracking

I don’t think Armand didn’t know. Amongst all the vampires Armand is particularly gifted with mental powers especially in the creation of powerful illusions. At least he is in the books, if this is still the case in the show; he knew the entire time, in fact I would go as far as to say that Armand could see Lestat when Louis saw him. In the books Armand was obsessed with Lestat, so in this instance i think Louis is a means to an end. He probably does have some affection for Louis but not really love. And I think Louis can tell. Which is why the whole time we see dreamstat mocking Armand.

@@remholloway2579 He did know, yes. What I meant is, he probably didn't realize how much it effected Louis, and hearing Louis describe it in details now, as if he still could feel Lestat's presence, triggers Armand's insecurities all over again. At least that's how I see it :)

after armand said "that boy we knew in san francisco is still in there. soon enough we'll have him saying what happens next" my working theory is that someone more powerful than armand put a complete mental block on daniel, and possibly a partial block on armand and louis? i cant think of a reason they need him to remember what happened after the interview other than they themselves cant remember either. so now they're trying to naturally jog his memories with the help of his aging brain and parkinsons weakening the block. and considering the familiar way they call daniel "their boy" and how they seemed to know daniel's wife, it appears he spent much more time with them than that one night.

I really love the concept and the design of the play that Claudia performs in. I agree, I think it definitely represents Claudia's life and how it's always been really. Daniel getting back bits of his memory and him listening to the tape has me amped up for next week. I can't wait. Hopefully we'll get a few more answers. Eric Bogosian is really doing a great job as Daniel.

So the thing with Armand and Claudia about Madeline is literally because what she's doing with a human woman is breaking, I believe the 3rd Vampire Law. She's not suppose to be even getting close to mortals, and not only was she doing it bad, she was shirking her job at the theatre to do it. And no she can't just make Madeline a Vampire to have her as her companion. Because that would be breaking a major Law as well. Only the coven master (Armand) is allowed to make or choose who is made. Santiago's maker was destroyed by Armand, literally for doing just that. He made Santiago and in doing so broke that Law. Punishment is death, most of time immolation. Now the sad thing is, she would actually be free to do all these things, Vampire Laws be damned. And Louis would (and does eventually) help her do it too. Because anything to make her "happy". But she willingly gave up basically all her freedoms to join this coven. She chose to be a member of this coven. And that meant abiding by these rules, and being subject to the governing rule of a coven master. Another coven master would've killed her already for all that she's done, because her writing in her journal about Vampires is also another broken law. He basically was like 'I've let you get away with far more than any other coven master would, but no longer. You will be a respectful member of this coven just like everyone else, and you will not break anymore laws.' And he did that, instead of just outright killing her, which as her coven master he does actually have the right to do. This is the Vampire world not the human world. And seeing as he choked up Santiago in exactly the same way right after, is proof that he's not treating her any different in that moment than he would another of his members. She messed up, he corrected her. I really wish, she had just headed Louis warning and followed his advice and just left with him. Because then they would be out of this whole city, possibly the entire country. She would have never become an official member of this god-awful coven. And none of this would be happening to either of then. Either that or, I wish she would have just grabbed Madeline and ran for it. Just disappeared into the night. Taken her somewhere far FAR away. Particularly somewhere without an established coven. But, unfortunately they're too far in it now to be saved at all, from what's coming.

What you've laid out is so true. At first I wanted to be mad at Armand for manhandling Claudia like that but the rules were explained to her when she joined the coven. Of course it sucks that she quickly came to realise that it's not the happy-go-lucky family that she's been looking for, but I think her teenage rebellious tendencies tend to come out when she's feeling trapped and frustrated (understandably) and that Baby Lu play just twists the knife in her reality. Her relationship with Madeline is so endearing to me because it's one of the first slow, intentional friendships that Claudia's built possibly in her whole life and it didn't immediately turn into a chaotic mess (like her crush on Charlie or any of the other vampires in her life who've either harmed her or talk circles around her and force her to be on her guard all the time). Finally she's met someone who's straightforward and isn't bothered with appearing polite for their own benefit, only to turn on her once they get what they want. If she had been lucky to build this relationship with Madeline earlier in the 5 months before they were invited to the Theatre, I believe it would have been a bit more incentive not to join the coven too early as she would have to choose between keeping her one genuine friendship with Madeline and dealing with the coven's rules and hazing. Maybe then she would have come up with a strategy to ask Louis to change Madeline and then sneak out of Paris with her while Louis and Armand are fixated on each other.

@@cyanrose499 I full on agree with your entire comment, I was just nodding along while I read, going "yup, yup yup" 😁👌🏽 But I will say I still raged. I full on yelled at my screen "get your f*cking hands off her" at like 4am 🤣But to be fair, that's also because I am not an Armand fan at all. Massive fan of Assad, and interesting enough he's actually really getting me to let go of some of my hate and disdain for this character. But for literally ALL that he does/has done/will do, I am not a fan. And I think the saddest thing, well one of them. Is that if she had found her and started getting close to her BEFORE she joined the coven. And she just went to Louis and asked him, to turn Madeline for her then help them both get out of this city. Even without him. This show Louis, 100% would've. If it meant that she'd finally have a chance at real happiness, love and that she'd be safe. Because she'd have an adult Vampire with her and devoted to her, he would. He didn't force her to stay, or drag her back the first time she ran away, and welcomed her back with open arms. Because all that mattered to him is that she was alive and safe. He actively allowed and encouraged her to go the 2nd time. Even though it almost destroyed him. And yes of course, he also didn't want to leave Lestat. But the point is that with Claudia, for Claudia he'd do just about anything. Even to the detriment to himself. So yeah... it's just so damn sad. This whole thing could have gone so different, in so many different ways. Just doomed. The lot of them 😔
@cyanrose499
@cyanrose499 Ай бұрын
@@RowensARTstudio I thought the same thing too! Louis would have definitely allowed Claudia to go off with Madeline even at this point of the story if she insisted. Even he is expressing how tired he is of her misery no matter where they are together. They're both convinced that they're still stuck together even though it's clear they no longer have the same goals anymore. This whole show is just "everyone needs their space....and THERAPY!" 😂 It's such a shame that Claudia is already locked in as a coven member and we don't know what happens to you when you decide to abandon your coven. Magnus pretty much unalived himself soon after leaving and turning Lestat, and Lestat fled to America as soon as he could after all the mess that went down. Depending on how much each coven is in communication with each other (considering Armand was sent by the Roman coven to the Paris coven and he mentioned his concern of Louis exposing the London coven if he were to keep wandering Europe) it may be possible that you could be labelled a traitor and harmed when you wander into another coven's territory because here's a stigma attached to it. I just wish Louis and Claudia could have come up with a plan where they both get to remain independent, separate and wander around however they decide (carefully) and then meet back up with each other every few years just to catch up. Their personalities are just not suited for a life tied to someone else's restrictions no matter how desperate they are for companionship

Ok so I rewatched last week's episode (2x03) and here is the thing - While Louis and the show at large want to position his and Claudia's argument as a 'both are right' moment in ACTUALITY by revealing the truth to Armand a full night before she joined the coven and not telling her that Armand knew the truth he DID chose another one over her in that moment. Now it was for noble reasons but also selfish ones because he admittedly wanted her to be taken care of and not feel that guilt/burden of having to look after her because she can't navigate the world as the adult woman she is. But even IN this fight he lied about how Armand knew instead of taking ANY responsibility which is him, again, choosing Armand over her.

The shots on Armand's face while Louis tells Daniel what his "Lestat hallucinations" felt like isn't anything deep, I think. We're just seeing his reaction to finding out Lestat was almost always present during the beginning of their relationship, when he was chasing Louis and bending every coven rule because he was desperate for his love. Clearly they had some sort of situationship and I'm sure back then he was already scared that he'd never be no.1 in Louis' heart. Louis was playing with his feelings a little bit, Lestat represents another piece of Louis' mind at this point so I thought it was sick that Lestat laughs when Armand shows affection (saying I love you, and quoting Romeo and Juliet under his balcony) because maybe that meant Louis thought Armand was corny lol😭 I know Armand seems to be hiding things but I'm sure there's honesty in his words too. Yeah Armand called Louis master, after Louis called him by his first name/his name when he was sold into slavery as a child...

What I’m confused on though is… Lestat is Louis subconscious, or inner thoughts. He is clearly mocking Armand as you say…. If this is the case why then when Claudia came to him and was like he threatened me would Louis be all like “that doesn’t sound like him” bruh!!! You literally were there when Armand was berating and belittling Claudia right in fuckin front of you. Like what the fuck??!!! Dude…

@@remholloway2579 I think Louis likes Armand, and Lestat is a mixture of what Louis remembers of him + his inner thoughts. So he was just not taking Armand seriously but he still wanted to date him, but he couldnt trust him. But these are just my thoughts ! Then that was just him being an asshole and not believing Claudia 💀💀💀 I think him not saying anything at the theatre was probably him thinking Claudia's a big girl and i'm not part of the coven so this is none of my business

Leaving a comment for the algorithm (no longer reading them because there are spoilery biatches in here). I froze the screen on the page in Claudia's journal Santiago was reading, and not only does it mention Lestat but it goes into detail about how much Claudia hates him and her plan to kill him😬Then there was that page written in blood (Lestat's blood? I don't remember) mentioning all 3 of them 😱 So not only does Santiago know they were lying, he has physical proof of it! Seems like very bad news for Claudia and Louis. Also I'm pretty sure that it was Daniel, Louis, and Armand in that last photograph -- but I forgot about the body in the room, so hmm maybe not.

Episode 5 will cover everything that transpired in 1973 San Francisco from the first interview between Daniel and Louis. As you can see from the download link, Talamasca, that their relationship was much deeper than just a one night stand. In the books 📚 Lestat will return to Paris in time to decisively decide the outcome of the fateful trial of Claudia and Madeline. If you see the trailer of Lestat walking through the audience, that's when everything hits the fan during the final days of the Theatre de Vampire.
