If you followed along with our Hot Rod Power Tour 2022 experience you know we had connected with DEI to mitigate some of the heat challenges in both the 1970 Pontiac LeMans and the 1979 AMC AMX. Well after enjoying a much cooler drive across the American deep south during a 100+ degree heat wave we figured this would be a great time to reconnect and discuss their DEI Titanium Exhaust Wrap, and how to properly wrap a header.
Fortunately for us we happened to have a set of headers to be used for this demonstration! The AMX is about to make the switch from factory manifolds to Hedman Hedders so perfect timing to show off the proper way to get this done! We reconnected with Mike of DEI and he had us come up to their corporate headquarters in Avon Ohio to film the process.
We aren't usually the How To type folks and we don't do a ton of header wrapping, but we couldn't pass up this opportunity to make a step by step in depth video. On top of all that we got a quick tour "behind the scenes" at their production facility to see just how some of their products are created, essentially all of which is Made in the USA... on equipment almost all Made in the USA! That's the kind of thing we certainly love to see.
Huge thanks to everyone at DEI for their support and willingness to shoot this video with us, and to Mike for the free labor! Most folks doing this are coming at it without any experience so being able to share this kind of thing we feel is a pretty valuable video. We hope you all enjoy it and learn something from it as well!

Something a bit different from us, the How To thing isn't our typical but we thought we should use this opportunity to do a little extra education on something. What do you all think? Sometimes you are interested in seeing a bit more of?

For SURE! The peel and wrap products are life savers and make a massive difference. You really never understand just how crazy hot it gets in engine bays and what a difference a thin bit of material can make. This definitely won't be the last of their product you see us using ;)

It's most definitely time consuming, somewhere between 2 and 4 hours depending on what application is and what materials. Doing this on my ceramic coated ones was a BIG pain because the wrap kept slipping. Certainly not for everyone nor is it necessary for everyone.

Just order mine to put on my V6 header. Seems like it gets pretty hot inside the engine bay so hopefully this wrap will help reduce the internal engine bay from getting so hot all the time especially in the summer time whe the temp is over 110 degree. Every little bit of heat that I can help reduce inside the engine bay would prolong the life of all the internal gasket, plastic, and rubber from wearing out.

Excellent video, great info Austin! The DEI crew seems to really have their act together with this stuff! Put some fiberglass heat shield on the turbo in my old Dodge a handful of years back because the factory tin shield rotted away, found the leftover bit of it as I was cleaning out a shed last night (I R hoarder!) and was surprised to see it was a DEI product. (When I originally bought it , it was the only product of it's kind on the shelf so I was not paying attention to brand name) And apparently you posted this as I was digging and discovering lol. Most excellent timing sir! After watching this I think I will get some of the new stuff you were using and replace the old, and now tattered, fiberglass... and maybe enough to do the hotside pipe too.

VERY good video. I watch a lot of how to's with a first time build, and always liked the looks and anti heat benefits. I do come from a back ground of wrapping racing bicycle bars so hopefully mine turns out good. I probably wrapped 400 sets in total, so the experience will definitely help. Yet another zip tie moment. Once you get so far, use the zip ties to hold it just in case of a hand cramping up. Job can be a pain in the butt, but done right it`s well worth the effort. Wait till the job is complete before celebrating with cold snacks. You need an extremely sharp pair of scissors for the job. Thanks for the lesson Mike. Thanks for taking us along Austin. This should definitely help with the heat. Speaking of the Pontiac, did Jim lose any weight due to the heat. You both were sweating up a storm. Stay safe guys, God Bless.

When I got my stainless shorty headers for my 327 Chevy, I thought about wrapping them, but did not, I just left the shorty headers alone. I have about 3,000 miles on the new motor now and found under hood heat off the headers in Florida summer heat is not really a big deal. I did however wrap all the pipes from the collectors all the way back to the mufflers to keep cockpit temps down so the A/C can keep up and that is a wise move as the pipes go all the way passed the B piller where the mufflers are located at. This simple straight pipe wrap was very simple to do and really keeps the heat down under the cockpit inside the car. I am old enough to know better than to have loud mufflers on a red muscle car on long trips ( friggin FlowMasters all SUCK ! ) So I researched & found & installed a pair of the most quiet, free flowing touring muffles on the market ( Bola touring) and used 2 1/4" pipes from the collectors to the mufflers and 2 inch out the back. To be honest, it's STILL to loud for my liking as in some small town USA, you do NOT want to draw any attention to an out of state plate on a RED muscle car!!!! So I am now into looking for a resonator muffler to add to the system to shut this 327 completely up.

The infamous AMC, aka Rambler dog leg ports. Headers, oh my goodness. I've owned my 76 CJ-5 well, forever. Hate hate hate Headers. Do not throw away your stock manifolds, you need to read why dog leg ports, these engines came stroked from the factory. Seriously, wonder why NASCAR hated Rambler. So much the Banned Rambler because they beat All the completion. High nickel blocks , they never wear out. Read up on your AMC see how the built stuff to last.

Honestly... this is how NOT to wrap headers. No PPE, no pre-measurement, no spray bottle, no mention of coating the headers to prevent rust due to trapped moisture, tape not running up to the plates, and double ties. You don't need double ties! Why not just use zip ties to hold it until you're happy? Also, how about a light coat of clear Exhaust paint afterwards to stop the fibre trying to kill you in 6 months when you need to work in the engine bay again?!
