What is Diastasis Recti?
During pregnancy your belly stretches in all directions and this stretching weakens your abdominal muscles. Your abdominal muscles wrap around your belly and your waist. Your six pack abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis muscles) run down the front of your tummy and they are joined together in the middle by a band of thick tissue that joins your abdominal muscles together in the midline.
When your belly stretches during pregnancy the joining tissue in your midline also stretches. After childbirth you can be left with a gap where this joining tissue has stretched and your abdominal muscles become floppy and weak. You may be able to see your abdominal organs (intestines) bulging through the stretched area (rectus diastasis). This is what happens when you do an abdominal curl or sit forward straight out of bed.
The Best Time to Start Diastasis Recti Treatment
Past physiotherapy treatment has focused on closing the diastasis or gap. The problem with this focus is that if the rectus diastasis hasn’t healed by 8 weeks postpartum, it’s unlikely to close or heal by itself. The tummy bulge and diastasis will not repair unless correctly treated.
The first 8 weeks postpartum is the key time to start diastasis recti treatment to promote healing. After 8 weeks you can still improve your rectus diastasis condition however healing takes place during these first two months.
How to Heal Diastasis Recti Fast
During the first 8 weeks there are 2 ways to promote diastasis healing and recovery
1. Wear a lightweight elastic abdominal support garment
Wearing an abdominal support garment when you’re active may help fix your gap during the first 8 weeks postpartum. Avoid wearing a rigid abdominal brace. When fitted correctly the brace should feel like a gentle hug with light compression. AVOID waist trainers and firm inelastic braces. Tight bracing can increase the risk of postpartum pelvic floor problems and further abdominal muscle weakening.
2. Commence Deep Abdominal Core exercises
Start these exercises as soon as you are able to do so postpartum, particularly during the first 8 weeks after childbirth.
Avoid sit ups or traditional abdominal curl exercises. These exercises train the outer 6 pack muscles and you can see the intestines bulging through the thin stretched midline tissue. Doing these exercises too soon can worsen diastasis.
3. How to Maximize Diastasis Healing
a. Progress your abdominal exercises
Increasing the challenge for abdominal muscles with progressive deep abdominal core exercises
b. Avoid abdominal strain
Ways to avoid strain:
*Get in and out of bed correctly and avoid sitting forwards. Instead roll onto your side and sit up/reverse this technique to get back in bed.
*Empty your bowels correctly and avoid straining with the brace and bulge technique and keep the right stool right consistency to avoid constipation.
*Avoid heavy lifting by using the correct lifting technique
4. Sit and Stand with Good Posture
After pregnancy posture often remains slumped forwards. Correcting your sitting and standing posture will help rehabilitate the deep abdominal muscles and promote diastasis recti healing.

With all these workout chains like planet fitness orange theory pure barre etc .. I’m just wondering why someone hasn’t opened up a chain specifically for pregnant and postpartum women .. something we go to right after birth and during pregnancy to get this in order because it really affects us .. on top of that we carry our heavy kids on our hips we have pelvic issues back issues, posture problems and all sorts of stuff because of a weak core and even c section pain affects women years after birth

Thanks I just started binging videos on the subject. I’m a dude, with IBS and I have metabolic syndrome recently I started a very, very strict exercise regime that I had to do for neurological issues and at some point I started feeling a hard area above my belly button only for the lady to tell me that I have a diastasis, it doesn’t hurt, but I’m terrified that it’s gonna get worse. At this point I find myself afraid to engage in physical activities and since I’m still overweight, it makes me so nervous I can’t exercise as much as I need to

Great informational video Michelle! If it's past the 8 weeks (1 year for me) since you had a baby, would you still recommend wearing the tummy brace? Thanks again for making these videos!
@michellephysio
@michellephysio Жыл бұрын
@Aspen Jay Glad this helps! The tummy brace probably won’t assist healing after 8 weeks and I’m inclined to think that reliance on a brace will weaken the muscles. Perhaps wear it initially towards the end of the day when your timmy needs support and your ab muscles are tired but try to wean off this in favour of using your deep abs when you can. All the best!🙏

While this seems common to affect pregnant women, this can also happen to men. Unfortunately I see the coning/doming in my stomach if I try doing a crunch/situp. I believe it was caused by excess weight. But my understanding is, even if I lose the weight, the diastasis will still be there and only surgery can repair it. You think those exercises will help me as well?

@JHEIKIM you can have an idea about your diastasis by checking the width if the gap as shown here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9KgZryCxLadYoU.html Personally I don't see the value in returning to crunches. They do nothing to flatten the stomach and are actually an outdated exercise. I will make a video on this explaining why in upcoming videos and have it listed on my to do list. Hi! Would this apply to a male as well? I think that over a period of time of working out my abs have separated. I have scoliosis and use to take pride in my abs. I have noticed now that it seems there is a gap (not huge but enough to be noticeable compare to older pictures.) My old job revolved around sitting at a cube with poor posture, then working retail 9 years, I lifted heavy boxes and then sat in class so I feel like I damaged my body badly over the years. I have hope that I can change this... Do you recommend dumbbell squats and cutting out deadlifts/ front squats with barbell? Thank you for the video! My OBGYN in South kept saying it was hernia and if it’s not bothering me I would not need surgery. It wasn’t until I relocated in Philadelphia my OBGYN said that I have diastasis recti. They was saying surgery but I did not know that there are exercises to heal that. I don’t want to go through any surgery. @Saret Steyn yes a combination of lower abdominal muscle control exercises can firm the appearance of the lower belly at any stage postnatally. Unfortunately, many women aren’t taught how to exercise these muscles after they are stretched during pregnancy. It’s never too late to commence muscle-strengthening exercises.

Thank you so much for the video. Can a person with DR do dead lift?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
This will depend on the technique she uses, how much weight on the bar and the rehab she's undertaken. Persnally I don't deadlift from ground level, rather just below knees to reduce pressure in the abdomen and protect my spine. Exhale with the lift up too, all the best!

Hello my son is now 6 and I've had issues w DR actually even before he was born I'd sit up and looked like a football coming out of my stomach. However I was 98 pounds andy stomach was always flat so I payed it no mind. However after having my baby I would say times loos 6-9 mths pregnant hard not jiggly. I found out about DR I did every exercise I could get my hands on went from a 4 finger gap to about 1.5-2 finger gap. I thought I could start working out the way I used to before baby but no no it ripped back open. My main issue is right around the bellybutton area I also now have a bubble that looks like a hernia in my belly button. This has lowered my self esteem immensely and I just don't know if there's anything else I can do but possibly getting surgery. I'd rather not. I also can't find a Dr or A trainer in my area that deals w pelvic floor or DR. IDK what to do any help from anyone would be good sent. Sincerely, Desperate

@Shannon Jessica Cochran can you give an approximate location so that other readers experiencing DR issues may be able to assist? You may also contact your national Physical Therapy Association to find Physical Therapy near you to help you manage your condition. If you are in the USA there is an online find a Physio link and email contact link (search APTA)

Hello I have two kids...my first baby was born nearly six years ago. I have diastasis recti for all these years but I never came to know this diastasis recti...I thought this is just belly fat... Now I want to know is this possible to correct it by doing diastasis recti workout from now on after all these six gone years? Eagerly waiting for your reply.

@Kaynat Kamal Yes the muscles that support and control the lower abdomen can be strengthened many years after pregnancy and childbirth. A physiotherapist can help you train these muscles too if you’re unsure, all the best! 🙏

I’ve closed my gap from three fingers to about a finger in a half. And for some reason I couldn’t get it to close anymore. But this makes so much sense! I didn’t think about my everyday activities that prevent it from closing. Also, I noticed other exercises for different muscles groups that may be preventing my abs from coming together as well. Do you recommend not doing certain movements that could make it worse? Workouts for legs, back, chest, arms, etc. Help lol 😂
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@Sanna Taylor yes definitely, exercises that involve intense abdo contraction eg abdo curls and whole body exercises that increase pressure within the abdomen eg leg press, lat pull down. If you need more information you may like to refer to this self help book that outlines the exercises to choose and those to avoid in detail here www.pelvicexercises.com.au/pelvic-exercise-products/prolapse-surgery-recovery/inside-out-michelle-kenway-ebook/ I hope this info helps you out, keep up your good work! 🙏

@Amy Agustia it's still early days and appropriate deep abdominal core exercises will help to tighten the lower abdominal wall (along with supporting the spine and pelvis too). 🙏

@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@ Anwaar Tabassum this is a common problem after delivery, I understand. This can be because of weight gained during pregnancy, changed posture and weakened tummy muscles. The best approach is to manage your diet well and exercise, exercises to choose are not abdominal curl/sit up exercises, rather the abdominal exercises shown in this video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pruDd7V4zJfZj4U.html along with whole body exercise including walking briskly and for 40-50 minutes, 5 days a week (if you have a pram then great whole body exercise to do with your baby). I hope this gives you a place to start and good luck! Michelle

But from navel to upper abdomen gap is not closing because I'm not doing any exercise or breathing. Can you help me to close the upper abdominal muscles
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
Chitra you can do the same thing around and above the navel - the transverse abdominis muscles also sit above the navel too. You can try using your hands placed around your waist to activate this area too - same technique applies, all the best! 🌸

Not useful. Bike riding is good for your cardiovascular health and burning calories but will do nothing for diastasis specifically. Follow her vids for that in addition to your bike riding

My second child already 5 years old, can I still fix my diastatis recti??
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 жыл бұрын
@cake yes you can definitely train the deep abdominal muscles at any stage postpartum. Avoid the intense core abdo exercises and focus on the deep inner core abdo exercises which are far more subtle and about control rather than gaining a six pack. This playlist of my diastasis recti exercises will give you more exercises to choose from too, all the best to you kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9KgZryCxLadYoU.html 🙏
