Getting a handle on hard yoga poses is a matter of believing in yourself, letting yourself fail, and just, plain good instruction. Watch the video for a demo so you can learn how to do them too.

People should really develop the necessary muscles before trying this stuff. Yoga isn’t about getting into the poses, it’s about flow and getting to know your body.

This was really great! Thank you! If I could just add something real fast.. Something (essential for proper posture) that also contributes to the ease of an asana is proper gaze! For example, in bakasana (crow pose) if your gaze is at your feet, you will most likely fall. Instead, one’s gaze should be forward, about 3 feet or so. (As far as I know) every asana has a designated gaze point. While some focus points do contribute to the ease of a pose, most/ all allow practitioner to receive full benefits of pose by doing it properly and completely. The nine gaze points are: - a point in front of you, like the example of bakasana; - our navel, like in adho mukha svanasana (downward dog); - the tip of one’s nose, like in chaturanga dandasana; - one’s hands or finger tips, like in utthita parsvakonasana, gaze is towards your extended hand/finger tips... achieving your gaze here is actually pretty much the last step in performing this asana, and instead of creating ease, it allows you to receive the full benefits of the pose; - our feet or tips of toes, like in janusirsasana (head to knee pose); - gaze to the left or the right, depending on which way you are looking, usually in twists like in matsyendrasana; - upward or outward, like in virabhadrasana 2, one simply gazes beyond the hand, beyond the finger tips, into infinity; - our third eye center, used in many types of meditation This comment turned out to be wayyyy longer than I anticipated, I hope it was interesting, or at least informative!

It's like a 'pirouette' (or a triple pirouette) in ballet. Believing that you can do it is 90% of the accomplishment. Yoga (& ballet) is more about alignment than anything else. Of course, as a fitness skill we HAVE to consider strength. Strength that forms at the very end of the muscle extension--not overdoing it, or 'muscling' the pose. Somatically involving the mind/body takes the most practice. Going inside to 'feel' the pose. Some of my students learn this from Ideokinesis, Laban, Bartenieff, Alexander, & Feldenkrais. Some do it automatically. But, most of my ballet dancers transition to Yoga easily. Most have been doing ballet since the age of 7.

"Want to get a split like this? All you have to do is months of stretching and sliding to get to my flexibility level that I show over the course of 10 seconds in this video! Did I mention that it's really dangerous and it may cause injury to overwork your muscles and force these poses in a short span of time? No? OK then! Have fun with the splits!"

@@AppleFish Do you get pain anywhere? I thought I was doing it gradually even though I was very sore on the inside of my shin near the knee hinge. But then I strained my calf muscle which I guess means I was overdoing it or had the wrong form although I don't see how you can get the wrong form really. I copied mine from the BBC site and she's pretty similar. I don't know whether to abandon my attempt at splits now or try again slower (I already felt I was going pretty slow). The pain is gradually subsiding after two weeks, still there though when I press it. I don't want to injure myself trying to make myself more flexible, but I need goals to be motivated.
@AppleFish
@AppleFish 5 жыл бұрын

Ha! I tried your trick to do crane by using yoga blocks and I was able to do it, for about 2 seconds so I will practice. BUT I could not get by knees into my armpits, quite yet. I have to practice that. The way I did this was I put a pillow about 2' in front of me. I put down 2 yoga blocks on their sides and stood on them and then rose up to my toes. Then I crouched down and got my elbows into a comfortable place for me and leaned forward. i held the pose for a few seconds, then fell forward onto the pillow into a crouch and I am practicing doing a headstand by raising up my legs. I can do headstands and handstands by kicking up. I do 40 pushups and situps per day part of my yoga routine, and I am 60 years old.
