Hi! In this video we will be listening, discussing, and observing how to hear resonance. Understanding how to listen for resonance makes the interpretation of your own voice much easier. Most beginners and intermediate individuals have no idea what to listen for to observe resonance. By gaining this awareness of resonance you can trouble shoot and navigate more freely.
The vocal tract resonances have very distinct sounds that are preserved regardless of what actions occur. Each individual resonance acts somewhat like a subtle melody. Our goal is to train the ear to listen for that subtle, warping, resonance melody.
This video covers a few primary topics:
00:00 Intro
00:35 Resonance / Vowel Basics
01:42 Hearing Resonances
02:30 Hearing R1
06:00 Hearing R2
08:12 Resonance vs Vocal Weight (thickness & thinness)
10:00 Considerations for resonance
12:38 Vowel Homology
15:12 Vowel Scaling
18:17 Diagnosing 2 Common Resonance Issues
20:08 Overtone Singing
20:34 Summary
22:05 Conclusion
I experimented with different lighting this video and it turned out poorly! Also, there are some gnarly plosives in some of this audio. I tried to manually strip some but it was just too many and I didn't want to re-record everything lol.
warmly,
z

@@TransVoiceLessons But seriously tho. I can only imagine someone as perfect of a teacher as you to be only one-in-millions: - Doesn't shy away from the technical. People make "meme" of this, but for someone who love those, it helps jumpstart A LOT of things. It makes "voice" world which I thought as "trial-n-error", to be something concrete. - Is superbly skillful with good control. As you said, mimicking is inherently our talents. You're able to touch all the gradients, letting us progressively mimicking the steps one-by-one, testing A, B, C in isolation. - "The source" for a lot of things. There're so little technical/materials compiled together out there about this. Yet you just casually made it, all packaged like a professor would. My profs doesn't even have to do much nowadays for materials, coz "shoulder of a giant", books upon books already in good formatting.

or have already gone through the trouble to learn a phonetic based language (such as Japanese's hiragana which is based on syllables which all derive from あ、い、う、え、お or ah, ee, oo, eh, oh) honestly, my memorization of the japanese syllabaries has probably already helped me a lot in this in that i can understand something as a *sound* rather than a *letter*

As someone who is an electronic musician and works with synthesis this approach makes so much sense because you're adjusting the filters in your throat like you would a synth for resonance. I have a spectrograph too and this makes it so easy. So, the undervowel is the low pitch of your voice and the overvowel is the high pitch of your voice at the same time. And the undervowel is controlled by your throat and the overvowel is controlled by your tongue. This is easy when you explain it this way. I'm giggling while I type this :) This is helping so much!

You just got mentioned in an r/egg_irl post! All us trans girls love you, haha 💖 I commented in there how much help you have been, basically saying how this channel should be in the Transfeminine 101 pamphlet you metaphorically are given when starting transition. I had a really funny interaction the other day on the phone, I was calling a urology clinic to ask whether they performed or had info on a testicular sperm extraction to do before orchi, and lo and behold my voice passed enough that the lady on the phone was so confused, mentioning things like "do you have an OBGYN?" and "your partner will have to set up an appointment", totally not realizing this was for me until I mentioned gender-affirming surgery lol (there was a loud "OHHHHH" after a pause in which she figured it out). It felt so good to have my voice pass a blind test like that, all because I'm listening to my own voice with intention on an almost daily basis, and learning from your videos

Thank you SO much for this video! It's EXACTLY what I needed! 🥰 I struggled for 1 year to get any feminine sound. I was ambiguous at best despite having a soft voice. I raised my larynx but my voice was still not small enough. I had no idea why until I watched this video. I discovered that vowels are created with the shape of our tongue. I practiced vowels for about 15 minutes, and I'm not sure how, but I achieved a voice as sweet as yours! ♀

Cool, I've been working with a speech therapist and she hooked me up with some apps that do some stuff like that. She said that the things I need to work on are raising the pitch of R, O, and M sounds. The hardest part for me is to not slip back into my old voice. Ok, sometimes I need to repeat some lessons,... but thanks to you, I now have a more feminine high pitched voice, where I feel like I am still talking low, because my register (r1) seems to now be Kinda stuck higher. I bought a book that explained everything that you are teaching,... but it did not really explain how to isolate the Muscles that control the different aspects of speach and sound. Before all i knew was the Intonations and some of the articulation.... But I could Not nail a way to get rid of the bass from My voice.... Now it has diminished significantly. Have you thought about going over resonances with respect to the IPA vowel chart? If you put the vowel resonances on a 2d plot (using the R1 and R2 as the x and y values) from the section at 7:42, that is essentially all there is to how the IPA vowel chart is constructed.

Hello there! I watched some of your videos that's all about voice training and understanding how sounds and voices work, all thanks to you, I started a level 1 training with myself few months before the first day of 2021, to improve on level 1 and 2 more for a better next level, I stayed on level 1 and 2 for too long, I'm actually more than ready for level 3 (to start this time vocally and not silently), I have absolutely no problem at all to begin level 3 voice practicing right now, but the only one problem here is: What if my dad judges me for training my voice? Look, I'm sure I'm not alone on this, but I'm one of the very few (rare) people when it comes to their parents, I won't care if my mom hear me all the time because she trusts me a lot (and she means a lot to me too), however, my dad isn't less likely to not judge me at all, at least. I know both of us are different in careers, you're sticking to sound engineering, music, and singing a lot, and I'm sticking to science/technology, history/geography, and these "nerd" things, but it doesn't mean I don't wish for what you have in skills, I can actually sing as a generic talent, the only problem is I'd be shy for singing in a "fair-enough" masculine voice, my voice isn't in the masculine zone, it's in the androgenous zone, but a little closer to masculine, which means I could take time less than the most natural and generic adult male voice, I don't care how much time it would take to completely feminize my voice, the 2nd and final problem is simply not about voice at all, this time I just became heavily testosterone sober because I waited for too many times without coming out at all, and I think you've barely guessed I'm living in a conservative society, but now that I'm no longer afraid, I'm willing to come out to and in front of my parents, even if it means I would not only being rejected, but also kicked off the house, or even murdered for who I am, my mom is more likely to support me after coming out than my dad, while my dad is far less likely.

Hey there Z Thank you for the videos! I am looking to analyse my voice in this way and I was wondering if you could recommend what sort of hardware I would need? Thanks x

I'm still practicing :') But progress is difficult.. ♥ My voice just turns into breathe if I go too high >-

I'm guessing that might be because you only/mostly reach higher by adjusting pitch with your vocal folds instead of raising your larynx and contracting the spacs in your throat and mouth.

Very nice, just started transition .. very late in life. But here is what I found, I was able to do simultaneous when you do and overlap the frequencies. It was kind of confidence building. Ran it a few times and seems to get a hang of it only with you as a duet. The spectrum you show is it a TFFT a temporal fast Fourier Analysis /?

That video helped me a lot to visualize better whats happening to my resonance when I use my feminine voice. I've always noticed that R1 and E2 are working in unison when I make the overall resonance brighter but seeing a visualization of this is just super cool. I wanted to ask you what exact software did you use in this video? I'm using Abletons internal spectrum but it's not detailed enough. Thanks for the great video! :) edit: I've been learning with your videos for the last 6 months and just kept going and going and 2 weeks ago it finally clicked and I started to be super satisfied with my new voice and went full-time with it instantly. :D My life quality is so much better now and I think without the resources you gave here I wouldn't have made it so far.

Are there any techniques I can work on to improve maintaining a good resonance at higher volumes? At the kind of volume you talk at in your videos I'm absolutely fine but if I have to deliver a presentation to a lot of people and project my voice or talk in a loud environment I really start to struggle to maintain good, clean resonance and my sound becomes less bright and sounds more forced. My pitch isn't a problem - it's just resonance as I increase volume... I think this is the last bit I need to master. Ps. your videos are super-helpful!

Hey Zheanna, I've got most of the Resonance stuff down but I was wondering if you could give us some exercises or explanations on how to get a more open quotient :3

When you said about vocal folds coming closer together, was that the same thing that the exercise in a previous video of breathing silently or trying to get that smiling in your throat feeling were for? And just curious, if the line of pink dots and green dots were r1 and r2, what were the blue line and the two black lines?
