Hi everyone! I've been in the process of moving for the past several weeks. While staying with a friend and looking for housing, I had the urge to make videos but only had my laptop with me. I decided I'm gonna start a straightforward series on common mistakes and tips that can help you in voice modification! Today we are gonna talk about making sure we don't have any awkward or unnatural lip movements! These are super common when people start playing with resonance or voice in general but we want to make sure our lips remain neutral!

Oh, great video! Yes I did notice that in my own process, but now it makes me think about how the lip movement is connected to the oral cavity size in general and to reduce it while keeping the lips position neutral. Like, correct me if I'm wrong, but lips and cheeks that are mostly responsible for the oral cavity size (excluding the tongue positioning inside the mouth), and reducing the size of that R2 (right..?) is achieved by the change in muscle tension in lips/cheeks area. Does that mean that I'm doing something wrong or understanding it wrong, or is it that the reduced size of the R2 is usually achieved differently/independently from the lip movement/tension? And yes, thanks for a good insight, it's like getting another piece of a big puzzle or smth like that!

The lips certainly play a strong role over all resonance behavior. Think of them like a global modifier. The key here is, we want to modify that second resonance primarily through articulatory changes involving the tongue rather than the lips. The lips are like a global lowpass filter. But regardless of what that lowpass filter is doing, we should still be able to make the important internal changes that we need. Lip modification is super useful for certain sounds but it should never be used as a crutch for resonance! :) This is challenging to contextualize properly because resonance is fundamentally non-linear despite the fact the linear source-filter model is so valuable. >is achieved by the change in muscle tension in lips/cheeks area We do not want tension in our lips or cheeks unless we are doing some specific sound that requires it. Feminization certainly doesn't! :)

@@TransVoiceLessons Thanks, that makes more sense now! It's just that I remember seeing you demonstrating the maximal reduction of space in the oral cavity, where you were just making "the joker smile" (sorry %)) wide and teeth-y smile to demonstrate how much it changes the vocal tract size in one of your earliest videos on this channel, so... I assume it was purely a demonstration of that and not a call to action on how to properly work with the second resonator..?)) I did notice that smiling more in daily life - not during the speech! - helps me in general, because I never smiled all that much throughout my life and my mouth looks like I'm frowning all the time even when I genuinely smile; so I'm basically learning how to smile properly and normally, if that makes any sense. The idea of constantly smiling during the speech process does sound kind of ridiculous though, yes)

@@SoulStrings Totally! I am growing and learning every day. Several years ago I had bad lip habits! It was something I was aware of for awhile and it took me about 2 years to really fix (cause I had normalized it for like 3 years). It is true that technically if you want to have the sharpest effect with resonance, you would want your lips to spread though. But we often don't want that sharpest quality in day to day speech. It's quite useful if you are doing like anime voices or voice acting a child character.

I got to a speech therapist recently (this year) for my trans-affirming treatments and she is constantly emphasizing the smiling thing, praising me when she hears me put it on. The tension feels very bad and leads to unnecessary fatigue. Most of the trans-affirming care here is based on texts from about 40+ years ago and misgenders trans people so I'm not surprised the vocal therapy is outdated as well...

I’m sorry that this happened to you. This is an emerging service in the field of speech pathology and even though we’ve had studies and trainings for years it still a new service a lot of my colleagues do not understand. I’ve been providing this service for over 7yrs and agree with overuse or misuse of lip rounding and smiling. You should never feel like you have to be someone you’re not just to achieve an accurate gendering from someone else. This therapy should always be about you and your goals and like in the video; not constantly walking around with a fake smile. 🤦‍♀️

It's been a really crushing year and I've hit so many roadblocks but it feels I'm coming up to an important inflection point. It's always been so challenging for me to build teams and organize people. I've always been a loner who isolates from other people. I've come to accept that I can't do it all on my own. Looking forward to producing the highest quality content possible in the coming weeks and months.

When I see expert musicians and athletes, they often make their skill look so effortless. That's a byproduct of reducing extraneous muscle tension; they only use what muscles they actually need and try to minimize all other movement and tension. This mouth tension is another example of that, and a good thing to watch out for.

Huh! Interesting. In my youth I'd read a book on ventriloquism -- I have no idea why -- and practiced it quite a lot, so I got really accustomed to playing around with my throat and mouth without engaging my lips. I still do it from time to time, especially if I'm just talking out loud to myself. So when I started following some of your exercises, it honestly didn't occur to me to involve my lips at all. Seeing this, it makes sense that other people do it, it's just not something that had occurred to me. Neat!

@jeanmariejohnson2659
@jeanmariejohnson2659 Жыл бұрын
Depending on the voice “condition” you may have difficulty. This may be where a visit to an ENT or Speech pathologist could help more. Depending on the condition you may risk damage to the vocal folds which could negatively impact your progress. Even if you were to see a speech path that was not familiar with gender affirming voice and communication therapy they would have voice disorder training and once the voice disorder (or condition) is cleared up you could focus of gender affirming changes :) Hope this is helpful! I hope your voice condition is not serious and treatable and that you can continue your journey toward your true self!

Hello, I've been trying for a while now to feminize my voice. I've watched and practiced after watching and rewatching to make certain I'm not making mistakes. However, I feel as if my speech impairment in general is blocking what I am trying to accomplish. However this is where my problem comes into play. Thru-out every video I have seen, all guidelines possible that I have come across. My own impairment to my masculine voice has always been an issue. I don't know how to fix it nor am I able to come across any vocal coach to assist in overcoming it. Now for the impairment in general though. I use to serve, I had broken teeth, had them surgically removed. Front teeth to be exact back in 2014. Due to this, I've always slurred words and it's made talking in general harder for others to understand. Even if I choose to talk slower and even try to talk clearer. I've always slurred my words. It's become a major hinderance in the steps to feminize the voice. You wouldn't know a work around or know someone who could assist, would you?

I have a question that isn't related to the topic of the video but I desperately need help with, one of the main process of feminizing your voice that is widely spread is keeping your larynx high, however, when I go to my singing classes my vocal coach says that I need to lower my larynx so I can not have my voice stuck in my throat. How can I sing "full out" but still keep feminine?

Unrelated to this video, but figure I should ask this on the most recent one. Anyone have any idea why the voice would be different one day vs another, despite me (seemingly) doing nothing different? I have like "spikes" in my progress where I feel like I'm getting better and it just turns out to be pure randomness because the next day I do literally everything exactly the same to the best of my ability and I lose whatever it is I was seemingly doing the day I got good recordings. It's SO frustrating because it makes me feel like I'm not in control of my voice or voice progress because a good recording doesn't come out due to any effort on my part, instead being due to complete luck and randomness that one day...

Physiological shifts happen frequently and this is difficult regardless of the form of vocal training. It’s important to be healthy and not try to have habits that sound good now but harm later. So the best way to deal with it is understand your vocal anatomy and refine those vocal habits. I’m not gender training my voice but I’m a terrible singer. As I learn how to sing, the physiological issues/inconsistencies can make it feel like regression. But speech/vocal training is primarily psychological. I found that, although frustrating, time and ingrained muscle memory is the best way to attain consistency in quality. And since gendered-voice training is all about consistently, I recommend a huge amount of patience.

I have been doing your training none stop. So, far I have been doing it 6 - 7 hrs a day. Now, I'm worried my adams apple feels like it gets stuck at a high pitch. Then my throat hurts. Will it permantly stay high if you use a high pitch too much? I just find it more enjoyable talking in a high pitch then a low one now. Also, can your adams apple be stuck raised high?
@Womandalorian
@Womandalorian Жыл бұрын
It will not get stuck, just keep practicing muscle control specifically. Try to be even more mindfully aware of how your throat muscles are moving and your influence over them. What you may be feeling is heavy strain, especially bc you say you practice quite a lot each day. When muscles get sore there it will feel like that. Do make sure you are drinking a ton of water. Good luck with your practice :)

Greetings my friend!!....You are the right expert to make this insane reaction video and give us your opinion about this insane singer...In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just it was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coachs, singers, musicians, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because your channel will explode with an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mKqIZqmZ0t-ykZc.html

Where are you getting that from? Lol! Vivienne charges $70 per lesson. Clover charges $120 per lesson. Our 12-week group course is about $70 per lesson and each class is 100 minutes long (averages to like $47 an hour) -- we also produce hours of free resources and release documents full of audio files. I charge a lot, yes that is a true fact. But not $500, in fact less than half that! I am a single human being thus my service is inelastic in supply. My demand has been overwhelming for the last 5 years. At one point I had a waitlist of over 9,500 people I had to essentially discard because it would have taken 90 years to work through. When there is limited supply but high demand, price increases. I am also devoted and dedicated to distributing the best possible free resources and ultimately providing the community an interactive audio book/app which will massively expand access to these resources in important ways.
