Nope, the man she loved couldn’t give her a child, “Please, please understand. I’m in love with another man…and what he couldn’t give me was the one little thing that you can.” meaning the child. She wanted the child, and this young stranger gave her one, “imagine his surprise when he saw his own eyes.”
@johnperkins4201 Жыл бұрын
Right. I was 18 when this song came out and I got the meaning the first time listening to it. It's simple lyrics.
@brendamanley1785 Жыл бұрын
And she picked him up for the purpose of getting pregnant,the man she was with couldn't father a child...not that he couldn't satisfy her,she said she loved the other man but what he couldn't give her (baby)was the one little thing that he could.That's why she left in the morning,leaving only a note wanting him to not try and contact her,she told him upfront she only wanted to make love to him,no strings attached.Was by chance they happened to cross paths and he saw "his own eyes"...he realized it was his son by the eyes and probably child's age in the timeframe of when they were together the one night.She said when they found the hotel it was a place she knew well,so apparently not the first person she brought there with the intention of getting the child she wanted that the other man couldn't give her.

yeah I'm really surprised he got the story so wrong... I was in my late teens when I first heard the song and even though the song in itself was catchy and sounded awesome, it was the story in the lyrics that drew me in. It was like a good movie, kept you guessing at every turn until the very end. I understood the story the first time I heard it though. Woman looks for stranger to get her pregnant because the man she was with couldn't. Finds a hitchhiker takes him to a motel, makes love with him and leaves with no intention of seeing him again. They meet by chance one day and he sees that her child has uncanny resemblance to him. Judging by the childs age he quickly figures its his and so girl has to explain her reason for what she did.

Yes- you’re right, that was his son! He gave her the one little thing that he (her husband or whoever) can’t. She didn’t expect to run into the boy’s father again and she had no interest in having a relationship with him. Great song!
@ChristinaMcF2 жыл бұрын
There are clues in the song. The hotel was "one she knew well." She's done this before. The man she loves can't giver her a child. It was "the one little thing that you can." "We walked in the garden and planted a tree." She desperately wanted a child.

@@terryomalley1974 Not cool at all. Ann Wilson of Heart has spoken a number of times about how its message is hideous and the band dislike the song but were under so much pressure at the time to record something and this song was offered to them. Heart don't perform it live because of how much she dislikes it but damn she does an outstanding job vocally on the record of portraying the feeling of desperation but also guilt that attaches to its subject matter.
