Buckle up guys! This series is VERY GEN Z (it's actually one of the few shows that represents this generation very well) But it's also super queer. The whole season builds up to a finale, when we finally find out what happened at the festival... Let's also give a huge shotout for the autistic rep in Quinni, who is also played by actress that has autism😊 Can't wait for the next episode!!!

To further explain the "C Word" in Australia. We use it like a normal word, and its basically in our vocab- especially when you're a "youth of today", and actually if you call someone "mate" with the intent of pissing them off, people get offended more than if u used the "C Word" in the intent of pissing them off. So basically, it's been flipped 😅

While over 99% of schools in Australia DO have uniforms there are some that don’t. This show is set in Sydney but near where I live in Brisbane there is a very large state high school that doesn’t have a uniform and a private boys schools with a uniform similar to the boys in the convertible (complete with straw hats). Also I think the boys call them sluts because private boys schools are known for perpetuating toxic masculinity and raping girls and getting away with it. Also Centrelink is where you go to get welfare payments so the rich boys are calling them poor.

Google Chanel Contos- she’s an all-girls’ school alumnus who started a consent education campaign after opening her inbox on instagram to ask other students from all girls schools about their bad experiences with guys from all boys schools. Single sex schools (mostly private) are still common around state capital centres and there’s been a lot of discussion about their outdatedness re. class, gender, sexuality and religion.

Some character are now my favourite (Darren, Quinn and Cash have all my heart), others I hate SO MUCH (yes, Sasha and Harper, I'm talking about you) but I think it's proof of how good the show and the topics are

As an Aussie I can assure you that the C-bomb is 100% used as a term of endearment, and as a derogatory insult…it’s all in the annunciation 🤣😅. Definitely stick with this series it’s really hilarious, very chaotic like Gossip Girl and sex Ed had a child…that they immediately sent off to an Australian public school. Love you guys always brilliant to watch along with you two lords! X

Have suggested it at least three times, being the annoying person that I am 😂 So thrilled you’re going to react to this. It’s a bit of a ride with some bizarre Aussie slang but as a high school teacher here it was both parts scarily accurate and also terrifying. I get very strong nostalgia from this show, even as a millennial. Memories of my tight-knit CBD high school (~25 students per year), being 16-18, living out of home, and having Sydney as a playground. FYI, the straw hat's being worn by those school boys are called boaters - the private schools they attend are some of the wankiest, sorry, wealthiest in the country; and c*nt is pretty much mate in Australia - unless your accent makes it sound like an insult, surprisingly there is a big difference in the way the word sounds! I have Pom parents, so I avoid saying it 😅

I feel like every adult in that school should have guessed what happened to Harper right away... I mean, drastic change in appeareance and personality -- seamingly overnight, is a very textbook sign (especially for children & teenager)... 😔 There are other more subtle signs of course but this one is pretty hard to miss, I was pissed that none of the teacher really understand it. I can forgive the other kids because they might not know this yet, but the adults should have recognized it immediately.

I have loved the four Netflix teen school series, and they are all very different. Sex education had a comedic element to it. Heatstoppers was more of the romantic. Both classical British concepts. Young Royals, was more a drama series (absolutely loved it) and then to round it out from Australia, Heart Break High, which is really a teen drama comedy, something that Australia has been known for. In a sense the language is relatively normal for Australia these days for different groups. I think the great thing of HBH it broadened out from the classic straight v gay v bi, and introduced to all the concept such as non-gender, A gender (which came later in Heartstoppers), then overlays different ethnic groups, First Nation Peope, and subcultures (where the stereotype is broken up) etc. sometimes in a playful way, sometimes in a serious way, sometimes in a sad way and somethings in who give a f*&k way. Yes, it does go a million miles an hour, but that is often the way for kids in high school. For us Aussies, I think there are one or two nuances that we get that others may not, but I think the writers have kept it pretty engaging for non-Aussies, without loosing the intrinsic nature of is place.

Malakai (the new kid) and Missy (Sasha’s friend and ex) are both Aboriginal/First Nations/indigenous. So they are considered black (or blak) in Australia. In other contexts (ahem, UK and USA) I’ve heard people of colour go off about “light-skinned” people calling themselves black. In Australia that sentiment is considered pretty racist (because of a long messed-up history). If you’re indigenous in Australia you can call yourself black regardless of skin colour. Missy and Malakai bond over both being black later and I’ve seen other reacters get really confused.
