Heavy Duty Welding Table Attachment for a Big Vise

If you watched my recent videos you know I just bought a welding table and also just restored a very substantial old vise. To bring the two together, I decided to weld up this heavy duty "shelf" that attaches to the side of the welding table, which allows me to mount the vise without sacrificing any of the work surface. It's made from 12mm mild steel plates and custom nuts that engage in the tables hole system. This build gave my TIG Welder a serious workout, running the maximum of 200 amps most of the time!

Wow. Very nice. Actually I thought you were going to make a 90 degree angle bracket that would allow not just rotation in the azimuth (vertical) axis as you have done but also a second axis at 90 degrees. So you could not only yaw it but roll it as well. Perhaps a bit out there but something I have in my backlog of projects. In any case well done.

@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay 2 жыл бұрын
I just rent this place so I'm not entirely sure. But the floor itself is concrete and I think they use some kind of black floor paint on it. It's quite durable but you can chip it when sharp objects fall down. Overall best floor I've ever had in a shop, although it soaks up a lot of light

Are you using a stubby gas lens on your torch or are you still using the old style stuff?

On my regular torch I do, but it's only rated to about 150A and it literally started smoking here after a few minutes, so I had to switch to my old clunky torch with the old school gas nozzle

Why didn't you weld right up to and around the ends of the webs? Surly leaving them as you did will introduce stress risers for cracks to propagate from? That said, it looks pretty well over engineered, so unless you're intending to use it to clamp 1" bar stock while you cold bend it with a sledgehammer it's probably going to hold up perfectly fine.
@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay 2 жыл бұрын
Fair point, as for why, I didn't want to put even more heat into that plate since the thing already started to warp, but also like you said, it's overbuilt as it is, so I figured it's not necessary. I wasn't even going to weld the inside at first but I figured if I don't, somebody is going to comment on it ;) I'm pretty sure if you destruction-tested this, the mounting bolts would shear off before the shelf takes significant damage - but I think we'll never know

Just for your safety, don’t wear gloves if you’re using the linisher with the work plate. If you touch it with the glove it will get sucked in between the belt and the plate and your finger will be stuck there getting ground. It sure beats a quick scrape.
