Machining a Threading Die Holder from a Steel Cube

I needed to cut some M20 threads so I bought an M20 threading die - then realized it doesn't fit into my die holder so I figured I would just custom make one from materials I have around. The large steel cube was the only piece of stock that was large enough so that's what I used!

Since nobody ever reads the description and people keep writing comments about this, I'll explain it here again: I used a square piece of stock simply because I did not have a piece of round stock in the shop that was big enough for this job. I needed this tool the next day, so I improvised and used whatever material was available, which happened to be a piece of square stock. I faced the sides first because I was originally going to keep some of the sides flat, but eventually decided to change the design after I had started.

Flats on one side would have been useful on a die this size. Sometimes an adjustable wrench is easier to fit into places than the handle are. Like on a lathe. No doubt you made it in such a way that it works fine on your lathe but I think you get my point...

Very-nice decorative grooves on the body, and echoed by grooves on the handles in place of the usual knurling. Very nice.

Great skill, I assume that was the point but the cost of the producing the die holder, not to mention the wastage an time involved. A 1 1/2" die holder costs about £7.50!

time wise and cost of the part .. its cheaper to make it and a lot of times it last longer ,, great work ,, I want to try bluing on stuff some time ,, only thing missing is your name stamped in the tool

Manual thread cutting rises my body temperature fast. I had to do it over 200mm long, because the turning tool would collide with the centre sleeve. Then one part got twisted.

It sucks for sure, but then so does doing it on the lathe (at least for smaller threads). Generally I'd say bigger threads are a bit easier on the lathe and small ones manually. It's just that it can be require a lot of setup on the lathe and manually is (usually) a quick job

I actually didn't plan on making it entirely round, I was just going to do large round edges but then somehow got carried away a bit.. that's why I wanted the would-be flat spots to be machined first

Very nice - I have a lovely set of Starrett tap handles which I use all the time, but die nut handles to die for (pun intended) are hard to come by - no idea why I didn't think to just do this, but I really should have. PS, German Volkel serial taps are my favourite for larger sizes and the best possible surface finish in the hole where it counts :-) Support local, if you can.

Good job Phil, I bet your glad the cutting die wasn't hexagonal... that would have been a little more challenging to mill a recess for that but I'm sure you could do do it. Do you think you might build anymore cargo bikes in the future? Currently I'm working on a aluminum bicycle camper trailer that I'm making from a Ikea bed frame. my video filming and editing skills need some work though.

Nächstes mal gibts wieder einiges an brünierten Teilen 🖤 Bei diesem war ich tatsälich zu faul weil ichs eher aus Notwendigkeit gebaut habe und schnell fertig haben wollte (ist an einem Tag entstanden). Lässt sich aber jederzeit nachholen

most likely the change gears he needs to cut those threads arent installed in the lathe, or are damaged, or dont even work properly, very common on cheaper lathes

It's usually much more work/time consuming than just using a threading die (at least that's my experience). So for standard threads I don't do that unless I have to

@@LachlanD1213 This lathe doesn't use change gears, it has a gearbox for feed speed and thread pitch that works just fine. But using a threading die is simply faster if you have one

Ok so with 3-D printing being all the rage why not just 3-D print a die-holder? ;-) OK kidding aside, excellent work! Looks fantastic and works perfectly, of course! I assume your lathe is not geared for doing single point threading for M20?

Actually it would be interesting to know what it would take to make one from plastic that doesn't break. My lathe can cut M20 but I was planning to do a whole bunch of threads (multiple workpieces) for a small comission job and using a die is simply faster than single point threading
