Always be knowling! I love the way you stand each screw vertically in the little magnetic tray, and have all parts aligned/knowled for reassembly... Probably the best way to make sure you don't end up with one stranded rogue part at the end... Thanks for the inspiration and keep on trucking (from France)!

Rebuilding carburetors is a disappearing art and she sure gives a lot of detail in the video. Something to consider when determining a rebuild is necessary is to check a couple of things before removing the carbs. First check the float levels, you can do this with a sight gauge that has a clear tube attached with graduations showing the proper range and the other method is to remove the top and measure down the fuel in the body from the top surface of the body. Secondly you should check the accelerator pump quantity with a small graduated vial, you can find a summer and winter value listed in the factor spec book. Both of those procedures were part of things that were prescribed in maintenance schedule and would be performed at that time.

Wow! I'm so grateful you gals showed up in my recommendations, I've loved Porsche and all German cars since my childhood and my dad was a US Army mechanic so I've always done all the work myself on all my cars and small engines. I'm 40 and proud I've never had to take a vehicle I've owned to the garage and in fact they're all still on the road, even the ones I've sold. My first car when I was 16 was a 1977 Porsche 924 that I had to fix basically everything on. Hopefully once this covid-19 pandemic is over and I'm reliably back to work I'm thinking on picking up an early 2000s Porsche Boxster for a project.

Hi Ms. Franny and Ms. Heidi, My name is John. I look forward to seeing your automotive service posts. They bring back a lot of memories,as once i was a VW/Porsche mechanic-(air cooled only) dealerships and independent from 1961 to 1974-then managing same (air and water cooled VW dealer products) till around 1980. Back then all mechanics/service staff went to VW official service training including customer service advisors. VW of America had very thorough and strict servicing procedure expectations My wrench turning experiences were for VW/Porsche retail customer service/morphing into SCCA VW (class C sedan-1957 VW "Oval window Bug") amatuer road racing, progressing to (class E production-1961 356B coupe-Super 90 GT- total factory GT's produced that year was between 9??-14?.... Interesting build specs >> Aluminum doors,hood,rear engine lid-louvered...plexi windows sides (leather front window pull up straps), 21 gallon oversize fuel tank,oversized aluminum finned Spyder drum brakes with front brake drum screened cooling ducts,lightweight wheels with spacers,Speedster seats,factory roll bar,a mildly factory "prodified" Super 90 pushrod engine- with 2 Solex carbs with factory handmade carburetor velocity stacks,a "Sebring" exhaust"-(resembled a RS Spyder 550 exhaust),limited slip 4 speed transaxle with interchangeable gear sets ratios/ring and pinion final drives ....all of these components came out of the Porsche factory along with F.IA. homologation credentials..... I purchased car in mid 60's with less than 2 k miles-it was a garaged/race maintained vehicle-(Porsche silver paint-then "Canary Yellow",then i painted to red as your "C"......Back in those days "60's you could drive a lot of these SCCA licensed/registered/inspected on the street as i did every now and then for just funnnnn... i campaigned this little "gem" in "gymkhana's- >should you notice (in your "C" Porsche),any sloppiness in the shifting,such as having to hunt for gears-unusual length shifting throws-check/replace the plastic bushings on the main shifter rod inside the shifter tunnel accessible at the gearshift lever console.. Thanks to you both for your time,your expert work/videos!!!!! Keeps me remembering some "good old days"!!!!! John B. P.S.-Can't wait till you get started back on the flat six project!!!!

Franny--I second Lars' and other's comments. I've restored a '61 Super coupe, a '64 C cabriolet and a '78 SC. I wish you were around when I was doing all of that. At least I had Harry Pellow to help guide me, but your productions go much further. Unbelievably thorough and helpful visually as well as with your insights. I'm hoping that my wife never sees any of these (probably zero chance), but if she did, she would immediately remark how amazingly clean your crisp white shirt remains no matter what you get yourself into. My only excuse is that I didn't have the benefit of a lift, and I'm 6' 5". Plus I admit to being less concerned about what I look like after being under the car. Thanks for what you and Heidi do for us.

This has been sitting for a few years full of fuel so I’m sure the carbs are quite gunked up. Your channel is a GOD SEND!

Franny, I haven’t yet watched all your videos. So sorry if this was covered before. But a bunch of people on the web have installed aux fuel pumps to help with the cold starting. Some as simple as a rubber bulb in the fuel line. Or an electric pump that you activate before starting. I feel like it shouldn’t be necessary, but want to ask if you have considered?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
I talked a bit about this in the 356 Cold Start video... My thing is that if the car has sit long enough for the carbs to evaporate dry, then the engine could use a good bit of cranking not under power to get the oil through to everything before any load is applied. Also, the starter can take a lot of abuse, but the engine can't. Also, the starter is way easier and cheaper to replace than the engine. It bothers everyone, but that starter is original to the car and the car is over 60yrs old... I can wait a few seconds to get the car started after a long slumber... Just MHO :)

Great video. Is that air flow meter the same as the Uni-Syn that I had decades ago? I used it for a time on the SU-HS6's on my 66' 122s but after a while a friend showed me how to get the same results by using the hose to the air cleaner up to my ear and doing it by sound. It worked really well and I never used the Uni-syn again.

I am finally ready to rebuild my 1956 356A carb and your video will be my guide. Maybe I missed it but after rebuild what are the idle screws starting point? I think you said 1-1/4 for bypass screws. I already rebuild the fuel pump off course watched your video. But I am still getting fuel in the oil. I think most probably is stuck flow valve in the carbs or maybe high fuel pressure.. Thank you Franny you are Great teacher and any other advises are welcomed
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If you have fuel in the oil it is most likely coming from the fuel pump diaphragm. If you haven't replaced that you'll want to do that. Oh, yes, 1-1/4 turns is a good place to start :)

@@HeidiandFranny I did rebuild the pump couple years ago. I finished rebuilding both carb and did install them. initially pump pressure was about 2psi. Next day after retesting showing 4psi and can see fuel leaking thru bottom gasket of the carb. I will redo the pump and recheck carb needle valves. I was carful not to over tighten the bass check valves. Maybe it is leaking from them. I have similar gauge to yours. I not sure these gauges are accurate at low psi readings. I also removed the mix screws prior to removal and before installation to avoid accidentally bending them. I guess back to square one :(

Hi Franny First, great video!! Just a quick question from a confused guy. In the end of this video (around 27:20) you say that you should adjust your air bleeds with the air cleaners ON but in the 'in depth' video you made on Miss Eva, you do it with the air cleaners OFF. Which one is the right way? Thanks
@HeidiandFranny

You are totally right, my bad... Probably best to with the air cleaners on for the final adjustment but if you want to do the initial adjustments with them off that is fine. It really shouldn't make a difference if there isn't any restriction from the air cleaners. Thanks for bringing that up! F

Can you film you starting it from the inside....when to pump it and when to hold the pedal down? Would be nice to see the technique so it wont flood
@geerstyresoil3136
@geerstyresoil3136 2 жыл бұрын
Depends if engine is cold or hot sometimes, when cold I pump 3 times almost full depress, don't go crazy with it. Then depress 1/4 the way down and crank engine. There is no choke so you might need to crank for awhile, it's ok though the oil pump is spreading much needed lube during this time. You might need to vary the depression from 1/4 to 1/2 while starting...On a hot heat soaked engine it might get tricky. I usually go easy with the same 1/4 depress while starting, but if it is not firing, it might have a mild case of vapor lock and you need to give it more fuel, so due almost full depression and it should start. It's much easier to flood on a hot engine so need to be careful.

Hi Franny, couple questions for you. Do you replace all the components with what comes with the rebuild kits? Like the air bleed screws and float needles? When doing Honda motorcycles we usually keep the brass bits and just clean them up as the OEM are usually better quality. Also the gasket on the top section with the accelerator pump is riveted on. Have you come across this? Curious what you normally do. It has to be replaced because it’s not in great shape. I plan on drilling out the rivets but unsure if the new one should be riveted back on. Thanks again for these videos, they are indispensable!
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, many times the air bleed screws are bent or have a notch where they have been bottomed out so unless your original ones are perfect (or at least better) replace them. That goes for all the bits in the kits. There is a good chance a lot of what you see in your carbs aren't original. As for the rivets they are just little alignment plus and will easily pry out. They just help to keep the gasket in the correct spot during reassembly. Just use something thin and work then up and tap back in when reassembling. I hope that helps :) f

Miss Eva is doing well. Is that what you are asking? Or do you want to know what she is like on a long trip? That little 356 is one of the most comfortable cars on trips. Between the ride and the shear joy of driving you end the day refreshed. It can be a little loud though...

It seems a little shortsighted to not replace fiber washers, when you have the chance.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
That is the beauty of fiber washers! if properly torqued they will not need replacing very often and seal well once they are wet. A copper or aluminum washer should only be used once unless you want to re-surface and anneal them (much easier just to replace). I've grown to see the wisdom in fiver washers for fuel - especially on fitting that are removed more often.

Great question... No. I was actually surprised, but I think that is the big up-side to those cast iron throttle bodies. I think the Solexs can have that issue, but I haven't seen that on the Zenith.

Hey Fran, if I can ask a question. The “air bleed” screws; are those the equivalent to an idle mixture screw? If so, do they control air? So turning them in does that enrich the mixture and turning them out leans the mixture? Since these don’t have a choke, is it good to set them a bit on the rich side?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 2 жыл бұрын
They are air bleed screws. They should only be adjusted when the car is good and warm. So, I guess to answer your question no. The missing choke isn't that big of a deal actually. Our '58 has a throttle hold that allows you to hold the throttle up a bit when cold.

Good job Franny,hey whats your feeling on those Zenith carbs vs. the Dellortos you worked on in another series? I wish I had the opportunity to put the Zeniths on the bug as the size is more manageable in a cramped engine bay of the bug. The manifolds for the Zenith put in a VW are just not to be found. Anyway great vid. Indy
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
I think I like the Zenith better... They are more responsive... The Dels are easier to swap out all the jets and to set the float level though. They are also true dual barrel carbs vs the shared intake of the Zenith...

scott-I don't know what your engine configuration might be,nor your tuning/tuning expertize-however let me make a 'suggestion'-look into a Holley Bug Spray-(but not for cold freezing wet weather-(they do have electric choke-but still can and will "ice" up a manifold until fully warmed up)!!!!!-John B.
@secoff1
@secoff1 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnbeech2192 I run dual 40 Dellortos. Dual carbs on a VW are superior in every way to a single carb-performance,gas mileage,no icing,exhaust options. The only downside is the space is small so it takes a while to get used to working in cramped spaces. proper preheat is absolutely critical on single carbs on a VW and most aftermarket exhausts for the VW are lacking there but dual carbs dont have that issue since the manis are aluminum and very short and heat up quickly. As Franny demonstrated with the 356 chokes are not needed in dual carb application.
