HELIX HX-4634 Boombox Sound Test

This is a HELIX HX-4634 boombox from 80's. AKA the little brother of the CONION C100-F. The outer casing was clean, no chips, no cracks. All parts were intact. Inside, the speakers were painted with blue color that makes this one very cute. However, it was painted thick that made the sound a little unclear. The system was all in one circuit board. The cassette decks were low end model, unfortunately.
I used the upper deck's signal line for the Bluetooth input since it did not have an AUX in. I needed to lower the Bluetooth signal volume to much the cassette deck's pre-amp. Also, this time I was challenged from the owner of this boombox to add LEDs on the speakers. It took me a time, but at the end of the day, It turned out pretty nice looking.

Isn't it great that so many are repairing/restoring these old girls? On looking back....what a stack of technology used in the period 1960-80. and on reflection so affordable back then. Great work Teddy.

Great job restoring that old school boombox, but, the cassette player was still giving off a recognizable wow and flutter effect.

Hi, James. Thank you for your comment. As you said, there is a recognizable wow, flutter from tape sound. Since this boombox used very simple cassette deck, it has light weighted flywheel that could not stabilize the tape playing speed. Not only that it has auto-stop mechanism, and that gave a more problem for the stable speed. Basically it is the main problem for this wow and flutter sound. Teddy

Hey teddy thanks for the info. Question why do some JVC s M50 have blue and some have white speakers I have one with the white speakers but I noticed some have the same color like the M90 I thought it was just fading but it can't be. Thanks

The price of the Helix is depending on its condition. Most likely it's sold $200 to $500 if it is decent condition.

Nice one, however don't like the blue lights at the speakers. When you turn on bluetooth I can hear some ground loop and DC clicks. You can easily avoid this by using an isolated DC/DC converter on the bluetooth module with a smoothing capacitor. There are different brands and do the same however the Mornsun are the cheapest (i found) and perform very well. You can get these on aliexpress for just a few dollars. Also, i don't know what kind BT-module you are using but there are very cheap modules (USB stick shaped) that also sound very cheap (very thin and no bass), better avoid these, better buy better ones, buy modules without a case, a pcb. Nice video anyway, nice after effects ;-)

Hi, code beat. Thank you for the advice. I recently using DC isolator along with inductor and capacitor to remove ground-loop noise. The LEDs for the speaker idea was from my customer. He loves that kind of lighting effect. And Bluetooth module I am using now is ver. 4.0 or above and it sound good. but not sure for the bass sound quality, so I will check other type of the bluetooth unit too. Thank you again.

Teddy Hashee with your technical knowledge I would even look into 3-d printing a housing with some sort of waveguide incorporated into the design of the box like nose and jvc, JBL uses for better bass. your the best at what you do by far
