I can respect lowering the price of a game. Games have gotten way too expensive. Listen, I get video games take a lot of money to make, but if it's so expensive that the product needs to be charged more than it's worth, then it's probably not worth it. I think we need more AA games.

As a developer: Game prices have not reflected the growth of the game industry for over a decade + Baldur's Gate is a $100 game. Elden Ring is a $100 game. There is no reason these games should sell for $60 when Super Mario N64 released for $67.

@@jhank0cean you're right, there's no reason modern games cost 60$, it's too much for most of them (not talking about Elden or Baldur's G), distribution costs should be way down from the 90s (digital, produce once, sell forever), development should be way faster and cheaper (no need to spend years mastering custom hardware and build ultra-custom tooling you use only for 1 game) and i can go on, mind my use of the word "should". Also, why is that 90% of medium to big games sell for 1/3 of the price after 1 year. Value just isn't there it seems. Something broke along the way, no industry can be booming forever.

@@jhank0ceanhowever, as a developer, you must acknowledge the number of gamers has increased astronomically. Also, sure the game prices has not kept up inflation, but for most "high quality AAA" /s games also includes other monetization have been put into games such as deluxe editions, microtransactions, battle pass, loot boxes, etc. So, its kinda dumb to complain the customer is actually getting a good deal these days. At least back in the day, you get the full game

I think it's wild that Hellblade is knocked for being what it's trying to be: which is an experience. The last thing I want from Hellblade is to focus more on my skill tree and complex combat that takes me out of the game and into the mental chess of how to get through it. I don't want to pause, I want it to play out exactly how it is: simple, smooth, satisfying.

Ninja Theory have always been up front about what they're doing with the Hellblade series and that their priorities are in that intense experience of seeing the world as Senua perceives it. Original took me 6 1/2 hours to complete. I wouldn't have wanted it to be longer - it's harrowing and designed to be so! Good luck to them for HB2, I hope people come to it for what it is and not as if it's some cut down God of War clone.

I think it all just depends on what the game will ultimately be like. I don't mind if the story is shorter if the story is amazing or cohesive. Even better, if the gameplay is absolutely fire. Which doesn't apply to this game but it's serviceable. I generally lean into the RPG genre because I like having replayability and being able to put multiple hours into games. But with that said if that short experience is a nice breath of fresh air, then I do appreciate it. But I also never buy games full priced, so... Yeah. Got the first game for 10 bucks, thought it was alright. Will probably do the same here 2 years after it's out

There is a factor I use, that not many do, in determining if a price is fair(this should not be used to determine if a game is worth it for you) and that is brand power. This is because for games with less brand power to be able to better compete, it is important that they at least have value where they have a better chance at winning, since it would be hard to compete with marketing and so on.

I think having a more defined and understood concept for the "cinematic action/experience" game genre would help consumers be comfortable with the price points. Let's say for example it becomes largely understood that a Cinematic game should be $50 if it's 10hours long and an extra 10 Dollars per 10 hours or quality campaign length. I actually quite like short cinematic games that get to the point and tell a nice story. I also feel that those games are distinct enough to separate them into their own type of experience since they bridge the gap between the two mediums of video games and cinema.

They did a similar thing for Alan Wake 2. Plus they undersold the optimization, it looked way better with RTX off than many games with RTX on and shit performance. Ran amazingly well on my 3080 laptop, on launch + they worked on the optimization post launch and brought down the requirements. That right there is a company that isn't greedy and have the customers on their mind.

If its like the first Hellblade the best part will be the visuals, acting and story. What might be meh is the combat and puzzles, which they may have tried to switch up after many criticisms focusing on those two things. Then again it could be a total disaster but that's why we keep expectations reasonable and see how it goes.

For me, game lenght is an odd thing to discuss. Like, back in the day, you could complete a game in a single day and wouldn't think about it. because we replayed games a lot. As games got longer and the replayability of games shifted to online multuiplayer, we started to demand longer and longer playtime/narratives. I nejoy a short game. I enjoy a long game. It depends. What I want is a deep and rich and detailed story to get my teeth into. So if thats 10 hours its 10 hours. If its 50 hours it 50 hours. Although, I don't think most games benefit from being that long. I've played many games that are over 50 hours and i've not see nthe benefit. Even arguably the best game ever made (not my favourite, but the best) in RDR2 was slightly too long and the entire Guarma chapter could have been cut and the game would potentially be better for it. I think the ideal runtime for most games is between 15 and 25 hours. maybe 30 at an upper limit. Some games can be 60, 70, 100++ hours and get away with it becasue its their worlds that call for it etc. But most can't. Hogwarts legacy too me 23 hours to get through and about 31 hours to 100% and I'm genuinly ok with that. It was a good lerngth. Star wars Jedi survivor was shorter, but I nejopyed it. Spider man miles moralis was like 15 hours and I enjoyed it.

I believe companies are misusing the "short but sweet" argument. Delivering a short game is a solution to a self-made problem, where many AAA games are bloated with dull filler content just to meet certain playtime quota. I recall completing everything in The Witcher 3 after +200 hours and still craving for more. That said, there is no shame in making a short game. Some games, like Hellblade 2, provide an experience that don't need to be long regardless of the quality. Just be honest and say so. No need to generalize to "gamers want shorter games."

…Okay, I didn’t play the original Hellblade, nor have I watched the entire video yet to understand why people’d be mad exactly, but I’m gonna real quick off the premise alone just say: I don’t get being mad about this. This is a AAA game, an exclusive from Microsoft that’s ALSO ON GAME PASS, and in the era where AAA games are priced at $70 and aren’t worth that price…People are mad this one’s $50? Was the original like…$30 or something? Cuz that’s the only way I say this being complained about. Edit: …Okay, I say this as a Persona fan: I don’t care how long a game is as long as it’s fun, or I get something out of it. I prefer a short game with a fun gameplay/good story, to a long game that, even if it has those things, drags on for too long. A game doesn’t need to be long to be good, but it needs to be good enough to justify its length. And let’s be honest: A lot of AAA games nowadays aren’t, so this is pretty refreshing. You can be mad if you want, I can kinda get it, but it doesn’t seem like that big a deal to me personally.

So, you’re saying, it’s just literal Gamepass fodder after all that marketing and years of development and Xbox hyping it? I remember all the Xbox Microsoft supporters suggesting Microsoft money and support would exponentially improve ninja theory’s capacity and potential, but now, we see the game has likely regressed in more ways than progressed compared to the first game. Could fight more than one enemy at a time in first game. Graphics other than facial expressions arguably worse. Took far longer to develop for what appears will likely be a shorter game. Now, anyone with eyes can see the first trailer with the giant in the cave was a complete lie that likely was pre rendered even if it was in-engine. After 7 years, this was all ninja theory could do? Obvious, Microsoft purchasing them has worsened the studio. Seems worth discussing?

I would have gotten Indiana Jones when it lands on PS, but I don't like first person games typically.

I think the biggest disconnect with time versus price is a matter of young versus old players. I gather most of your audience is fairly young. When you're older, you tend to have other obligations and interests, and more disposable income; when you're younger you tend to have fewer obligations and less disposable income. I'm probably older than at least half of your viewers, so 20 hours a week is a heavy amount of gaming. When I was younger I could fit that in in a long weekend if I wanted. Ultimately the value of a game is what you want to pay for it. You can only blame yourself for paying full price for a game and blowing through it in a weekend. If you don't no-life a video game there's no reason to feel burned by the length. If you're reading this you're probably in your 20's or under so you have no impulse control, but it's not your fault... yet. People talk about game prices and hours like they spent all their savings on a prostitute and blame her when they bust in their jeans. It's not her fault you don't know how to slow down and enjoy the experience. You didn't get ripped off, you just have nothing else to do. Instead of blaming publishers for how games are priced and encouraging them to pad their games by dozens of meaningless hours of the same gameplay loop to drive up the hour count, learn to pace yourself, replay games you like, play a game with high replay value like a live service or roguelite, read a book, walk your dog, do your homework, or do literally anything else for a bit. You only feel burned or like a sucker when you deceive yourself.

I couldn't agree more. There is a huge gaming addiction issue, and the industry just feeds the addiction more and more. The kids who are addicted probably don't understand just how addicted they are and don't realize spending 20+ hours in a game over a few days isn't the healthiest to do regularly. They want more and more. I'm older, but currently have a lot more free time and I still can't game endlessly. I do struggle with internet addiction, so I get it and understand the impulse. I just don't blame others for that and know it is something I need to work on. I've been drawing more, and it really helps. I may take up more reading and going for more frequent walks and some light socialization.

It's always price per hour for me. Or at least price per hour of fun. Which makes games like Deep Rock Galactic the cheapest games I've ever played and makes story based games most uninteresting for me, simply because the production value usually goes into "story telling" and art, and less into actual gameplay. If I want storytelling and art I can watch a movie.

I'm playing through the first Hellblade and if was a 30 hour game I would have given up a long time ago. The puzzles are challenging, there is no inventory, no skilltree etc. nothing to really manage besides the voices in your head. It really messes with you because the voices will try to confuse you sometimes which is the whole point of simulating psychosis. The area you are in randomly changes and you can get stuck in endless loop mazes if you aren't paying attention. I'm fine with being 8 hours long. I've spent more than that on it so far mainly because I kept getting lost but it's part of the experience. I don't think anyone will or want to rush through this game. If you do you aren't the right audience for the game.

Heres my thing with the co-founder leaving and no one finding out until now, and by the way since then he has commented on this and it sounds like there isn't any kind of falling out necessarily. I do strongly feel like if there was an official anouncement of this whe nhe did leave, I 100% believe that media and content creators would have found a way to create a narrative around this as being that MS killed the studio and lost the talent blaw blaw blaw, and the game is going t obe trash. It seems like the dude left years ago, and was only really part of the development of Hellblade II in the early stages, but had very little involvement. We can see now so far that it seems like the studio is in pretty good hands seeing where the game looks to be and how long he seems to have been gone for. Of course we still have to see the full product, but it looks to be shaping up well.
