I was lucky enough to get the 5 inch Prodigy when it came out. I read the owners manual, I also read an online 2011 guide. Then I went and so far put almost 500 rounds of mixed ammo. I shot trash ammo like tulammo, wolf , steel, aluminum and brass ammo and some Defiant Munitions tcx's and Gorilla Ammo Silverbacks defensive ammo and not one single issue. I thought the whole point to the Prodigy was to have a sub 2000 double stack 1911(2011) I'm going guess if you buy a Prodigy and strip it and put aftermarket parts why not just buy an STI. I'm sure your about in the price range.

I had the chance to try one of Skipz Prodigy's and it had a way better trigger than a Stacatto XC, not to mention several other outstanding upgrades. All in, that Prodigy was around $2500 with better aftermarket internal parts than the XC. To setup an XC to compare to that Prodigy, you would probably be in at least the $5300 price range. So as long as you do not care about the bragging rights, then a Skipz Prodigy makes a lot of sense. Also, the fact that Skip already has the services listed with prices on his website and his vast experience with the Prodigy, makes the entire process easy. FYI, if all that you wanted was to have a "better than Stacatto XC" trigger and improved reliability, Skip has a package that is around $500. So for around $2,000 (gun included), you have a dream trigger 1911 double stack...

@SkipsGunz your prodigy vids are the reason I'm leaning towards getting one. Why not get a 2011 at 1.4k. Then upgrade the internals first, then grip, tri top, cerakote, or whatever floats your boat and still be around stacatto pricing. With a way better product that's a 1 of 1 at the end.

@@erikmortenson73 ok I missed reading it when I bought them but the order says 126 or 140 mm tubes - they are the 18% stronger kits (spring and follower) and well I just realized I sent in my 126s to Skip just in case he wanted to check magazine seating - totally not worth it as I picked up a handful of atlas mags from him doah!! But in the prodigy 140s there is a noticeable difference between stock and the kit - nosediving or tilting of the nose/front? of the follower is hard to accomplish with the Atlas kit just wants to stay parallel as opposed to a noticeable lag/dip on the stock mags until I push the very nose of the follower below the mag body at the front and in mine at that point there’s is almost a pop as friction or something is overcome - the atlas stays parallel as soon as I push - I bet if you can get the lips tuned up per skip/or using Altas mag tune kit or just de-burred, polish and in spec as can be (calipers on the tube etc) they would be pretty to very good. Drop test didn’t spit a single round - absolutely noticed a difference - worth it will be replacing all prodigy mags with this kit if they can stay in stock - I have no idea how 17 will fit in the 126 as the atlas is longer in the spring then even the stock 140 by a noticeable margin - I am a FNG and perhaps geometry, metal, thickness of spring let’s it happen or it’s just magic …

I must have gotten lucky with my 5 inch Prodigy, it's running great and I didn't have to break the bank. IMO they are putting a hurting on all those super high dollar guns for a lot less money. I competed in USPSA for a number of years so I have a good idea of what it takes to be a good gun. At a third of the price they are nit picking them to sale something you really don't need unless you a competing with the big boys.

The heavier recoil spring has a purpose. It's there to help absorb the recoil of the reciprocating slide and protects the camming surfaces of the barrel, slide and frame. It's one of the reasons why GI spec guns seem to run forever while competition guns seem almost dead after a season or two. The other issue I saw is that the manual safeties are that way because this gun is meant to be carried. Those massive safety paddles would preclude the use of nearly any holster that goes high up on the slide to the grip. Most duty or OWB retention holsters are not going to be compatible with those massive paddles on the manual safeties. Those safety paddles also probably dig in like crazy if you're appendix carrying. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be carrying either of those "custom" Prodigys you have there.
@SkipsGunz
@SkipsGunz Жыл бұрын
I hear a lot of assuming without any experience. These are customers guns that they paid there hard earned money for and if that’s what they want that’s what they get.
@Talishar
@Talishar Жыл бұрын
@@SkipsGunz Those "assumptions" are basic gunsmithing from very experienced gunsmiths. For reliability, you want as heavy a recoil spring that allows the slide to cycle optimally. They didn't use heavier springs on a GI spec 1911 because of looser tolerances. It was to maximize feeding reliability and to extend longevity to the less consumable parts of the gun. Looser tolerances and a sloppier fit actually means less friction so you can get away with a lighter spring and still have function. Tighter tolerances generally have higher friction as there's more surface-to-surface contact and pressure which requires more spring to overcome friction. With hammer fired guns, this also means tuning the mainspring and other springs as a set. Most custom or semi-custom 1911s usually advise a break-in period for those tighter tolerance parts to wear in and polish each other. The old GI 1911s didn't have such a thing. The armorer just cleaned out the packing grease from the factory, lubed it up and handed it to a soldier for issue. As to the safeties, I don't care if other people spent their hard-earned cash on it, it doesn't make what I said invalid. They may have wanted more of a range or a race gun and that's okay. I approached it from a carry perspective where such massive gas pedal safeties won't fit any level two+ retention holster and can only really fit on level 1 retention holsters that don't go passed the trigger or competition holsters that are practically cut-out baskets in firearm like shapes with minimal to no retention. Massive safeties like those would not be fun appendix carrying as those stick out well beyond the rest of the gun and that shelf will go straight into the body. When I was still in the Air Force, our armory still had some old 1911s from the Korean War that still functioned and had so many rounds put through it the barrel was practically a smooth bore. It still shot and cycled just fine and had mostly stock internals. As expected, its accuracy sucked but was serviceable. This thing had probably seen 10s of thousands of rounds and was still trucking. It was a rattling mess, but still functioned. Most competition guns used by full-time competitors get tune-ups several times a year with a major overhaul annually or bi-annually. You neglect the maintenance on one of those and it'd refuse to run. That old 1911 was the definition of neglect but was still shooting. One is designed to maximize reliability above all else and the other purposely sacrificing reliability for maximized performance.

Skip please help. lol I bought a Prodigy because I couldn’t afford a P. As much as I want to live mine literally doesn’t fuckin work. Like countless malfunctions. Only takes 124 grain. I got this to compete with and I’m so sad lol do I spend another grand making it work or do I sell it and just foot the bill for a Staccato
@erikmortenson73
@erikmortenson73 Жыл бұрын
Can you explain why you keep saying a lighter recoil spring is better? The rule of thumb most competition guys and team gunsmiths (AMU & All Guard) have said is you go with a heavy enough spring for the gun to cycle and be efficient. Having a gun tuned to take all the recoil is better than your grip, hands, and arms doing it. Just because a 4.25" with a 7lb spring that is super easy to rack or cycle doesn't mean it's good for the gun and or shooter (which is good then that you have the recoil buffer in the gun with a lighter spring). Good video across the board on the comparison. 👍 I just bought a 4.25 Prodigy yesterday so I'll be adding better components to it.

I’d like to see a chart of recoil and main spring recommendations (matrix or something) based on say loads - like which you should use I bet light for the competition gun loads but how about my 147gr HST etc - bet a google search would do it maybe - oh wait I see a squirrel
@erikmortenson73
@erikmortenson73 Жыл бұрын
@@sidanx7887 I do know Altas states they use a 17lb mainspring for all of their guns. Yes heavier competition loads ie 147s could benefit from a lighter recoil when you're under the clock. Lighter loads like 115s tend to kick more so a heavier one would be better. Yep....that squirrel ran off. Lol

Nothing needs to be changed on the Prodigy, a reputable gunsmith can retune the firearm with the stock parts. Everyone cries that is has MIM parts, but my gunsmith used the stock parts, retuned the extractor, polished and revamped the feedramp, re-did a trigger job with the "stock" parts and now she's running 100% better. At first out of the box I couldn't fire more than a few rounds before it double fed, jammed, etc. Now after my friend who also happens to be a custom 2011 builder and also a bad ass gunsmith did some magic on my 4.25 Prodigy and so far nothing needs to be changed. MIM parts are being used on Glocks, SIgs, FN, you name it and no issues have been reported because of the "MIM" parts. MIM parts are not bad, can Springfield use better internals/parts, etc. Sure, but then the cost would rise quite drastically. If and when any internal parts fail, then and only then I will have my gunmsmith change all of the internals. The only thing I am having done on it is to change the stock trigger curve shoe to a flat one, changed the stock crappy guiderod for an Atlas tool-less guiderod and play around with some recoil springs and lastly, having the Ghengis Port by Moonsoon Tactical~
@SkipsGunz
@SkipsGunz Жыл бұрын
No one said mim was bad. You just can’t tune a mim part to be as crisp of a trigger break with them they don’t react the same as a good ignition so instead of paying the gunsmith twice wouldn’t doing the full replacement once be more cost effective in the long run for most people. Not u with your friends experience but others without that luxury
@chgofirefighter
@chgofirefighter Жыл бұрын
@@SkipsGunz I was lucky to know someone, can't say the same for others. But it's always better to have good quality parts and yes some MIM parts can't be worked on but with experience and knowledge many thigns can be done without spending too much $ at the end of the day, the Prodigy is going to be like the Glock of 2011, most will modify it, improve upon it and dress it up~ Thanks brother!

They come with a 12. Skip is wrong, the 5” come with a 9. I have 12,13 and 14 but mine runs great with the stock 12. If you are having trouble with rounds not fully seating a 13 or 14 is worth trying.

U guntuber guys go too far... did u really measure your finger to decide the trigger of a friggin pistol ? I have the prodigy, first shots out of a 50rd box I had about 30 malfunctions. Took the gun home cleaned it and cycled the action quite a few times . That gun runs like a scolded dog now, 750rds now with 0 issues. Accuracy is unbelievable, I cant miss with it. The Prodigy went from a disappointment out the box to probably my favorite in my collection easy. Springfield hit a homerun with this gun. To anyone who owns a prodigy, A good cleaning and break-in is key, save your money before buy a bunch of stuff u dont need for an absolutely awesome gun.

So perhaps the basement KZfaqr remark was uncalled for, but you shouldn’t be butthurt if someone asks you for your qualifications. You’re asking people to trust you with what may be their self defense weapon. Personally I would pass on letting you work on mine. Others may be fine with it, that’s up to them.
