Matt called and said he was having issues with his transfer case in The Heavy Wrecker and might not make it to King Of The Hammers. So I loaded up some parts from Off-Road Design and headed over to help. We got all the parts swapped over to the standard Np205 and mated up the ORD Magnum Box and got it all mounted in the Heavy Wrecker. The next morning we took it out for a quick shake down run. Had a couple issues... One being some loose wiring and one being the steering column broke, but we were there to help him get it back together and keep going. I appreciate ‪@MattsOffRoadRecovery‬ allowing me to help them get this beast up and going and able to make it out to The Hammers. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.
Check out mattsoffroadadventures.com to get your tickets to the Offroad Wrecker Games March 9th-11th.

I think "heavy wrecker" is the perfect name for the truck. even "big wrecker" or "big wrecks" ... all 3 sound natural and correct, and are good describing words for the truck.

Drive - Break - Fix - Repeat. Getting to real reliability and usability is a tedious process of uncovering and eliminating one problem after another until you've got it where it needs to be. I guess helping Matt fine tune the new Wrecker will just make Trail Mater's victory all the sweeter. Incredible scenery on that trail ride by the way.

'Eventually' Matt's wrecker will be an important tool in his arsenal. It won't be 'the end all, be all', but either is Trail Mater. They are tools for a job. Rory summed it up perfectly, he has had years of trial and error testing and rebuilding on Trail Mater to get it where it is now. Matt and Paul are presenting themselves nicely but they will be playing catch up. But overall it's awesome to see them all working together to make each other better. What little egos are present here are only here for entertainment. Thanks for that!

Yeah, I believe the Heavy Wrecker is too heavy. Both driveshafts broke just recently at King of Hammers. Just imagine what happens when he pulls other vehicles. That's a lot of weight on those parts. It will be interesting how it will fare at the wrecker games. Im not too optimistic.

@@NashBen The heavy wrecker isn't light but it's not far off from Paul's or BSF. Those guys weigh in 8-9,000lbs where Matt is 10-11,000lbs Edit: Trailmater tipping the scales at just over 7k makes sense.

A driveline is like a big multipart spring from the crank all the way to the tire tread. Each part has some twist on it in a bind like when the wheel lifts and spins and then sets back down hard. And every part has a breaking point where the torque exceeds the elastic strength and it start to deform and break. Sort of like fuses in a circuit. The tires absorb some of that. Next, the axles, not so much in the diff, the gears are pretty stiff, then the driveline and transfer case inputs (which broke on Matt's) the gears and chain in the transfer case take up some as do the transmission, the torque converter (if it's not locked) help isolate the crankshaft from sudden loads. The trick is to get that weakest part outside of all the expensive parts inside the engine, trans, transfer and diff, and not make the other parts too stiff so they can take up the shock. Kind of like those attachments to impact guns that limit the torque applied to bolts. Rory's had years to break parts and replace them with better ones, but not overly strong ones to get the right balance in his full driveline. Matt's just starting and with a much heavier vehicle. I suspect he may need a higher rear end ratio to reduce the torque on the transfer case and drive line and move the stress to the axles and tires and let them take up the driveline shock. Or maybe put something like 'cush' isolators in the driveline. Those who were there would know how the failures happened, was it wheel hop, or did the driveline hit rock, or something else? Or just brute force twisting the splines off the output shafts?
