Her Loss is a collaborative studio album by Canadian rapper Drake and Atlanta-based rapper 21 Savage. It was released on November 4, 2022, through OVO, Republic, Slaughter Gang, and Epic. The album features a sole guest appearance from Travis Scott.
On June 17, 2022, Drake released the song "Jimmy Cooks" featuring 21 Savage as the final track of his seventh studio album Honestly, Nevermind. Upon release, the song was the most successful track off the album and debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, but the song was not officially serviced to mainstream radio as a single until October 11. On October 19, Drake performed as a surprise guest at one of 21 Savage's concerts in Atlanta.
On October 21, Drake announced the "Jimmy Cooks" music video would be released on 21 Savage's 30th birthday a day later. The video was eventually released that day. The visuals were briefly interrupted at the 1:25-mark, with text in typographic letters appearing reading "Her Loss - album by Drake and 21 Savage - October 28, 2022". The album was then confirmed by OVO and Republic on their social media.

Drake hasn’t lost any important family members, he’s increasing his net worth, and is still topping the charts. He was flexing, dissing, and giving insight to his personal life full of toxic relationships and success reaching non relatable levels. I think Drake found focus with those themes and he actually sounded hungry. 21 complemented every track he was on. 3.5 is very harsh and some your takes on Drake sound salty bruh

privileged rappers (in my understanding) is not about rappers growing up with privileges as much as it is rappers getting too comfortable once they've gotten famous. even in this regard it can be a little ironic for drake to say this, but he has consistently dropped music for like 15 years now and maybe the past 5-6 years have been more burnout than lack of trying, who knows.

Wow that was harsh! I agree with you on having higher expectations and wanting more from a guy in his position. In terms of subject matter, he’s talking about his life and we can’t relate because he’s on a diff planet but that’s his life I don’t see what the problem is. Why do you expect him to be « mature » or whatever projection you’d have of him. He is his own person. You want him to rap about dropping off his son to school? Now in regards to the beats and production is where I personally want him to step up and change that same recipe, every beat could’ve been placed on an old Drake album for sure! Artistically I expect more. It’s getting repetitive.

I like to think Drake is self aware and knows he needs to mature. 36 is older, but it’s still young enough to mess around. Maybe when he turns 40 he will create an album about settling down and finding love. That would be amazing. It would be ending his brand, and his brand is lucrative (500 million), but it would be a great way to retire in terms of artistry.

I think the album is a step in the right direction for drake, good producion and cohesion. Good raping performances from both and an overall easy enjoyable listen. I find the beat on privileged rappers quite nice and smooth and the vocals are great especially on the video. Some maturity would be good for Drake but hey, let him live his life. My only problem with it is the run of songs from spin bout you to treacherous which is a bit boring, but the rest was good for me. I think this is his best project in recent times followed closely by dark lane demo tapes. It doesn't have to have some message or meaning so to say, that's just not what it is. Music would be horrible if every artist made Mr Morale and the big steppers

I believe we shouldn't criticise Drake about album cohesion . Also we shouldn't compare him to the goats of our generation Kanye, Kendrick and J Cole . You definitely need more time to digest Mr Morale or Donda but in HER LOSS he gave us some solid songs to have fun , chill with your friends and put on the car speakers . Drake music doesn't stand out as great piece of art . His songs have an instant reply value and 2 years after some feel nostalgic

He’s very much like Leonardo DeCaprio in that he is almost 40 and still hasn’t matured he still lives his life on a low wavelength with meaningless sex, gambling, and no evolution at all especially in his music as usual. Idk I wish we could’ve had artists like X, Juice, Peep, Mac, etc. to continue their work because they actually had genuine art and were* sharing art of substance.

I think people are criticising Drake as a person rather than his music per say. Obviously because of the controversy on Meg a few people are siding against drake for their own image. But I do sense in the air that Drake’s time is ticking people are tired of his persona and what he represents. While I think this album is actually pretty good, far better than recent projects. There should be at least few hits in here.

In my opinion it's a good album. Yeah, the content matter wasn't anything special but I didn't expect it to have anything special in terms of content, it's a Drake and 21 Savage albums, I don't expect that kind of stuff from them. I liked the production and Drake had some great performances. Though it feels like him trying to do stuff he has done before but not as good. I love Middle Of The Ocean but why would I listen to it when I can go to his older projects for stuff like that. It's definitely not better than Views or More Life but a step up from CLB and HN. 6/10

I feel if Drake actually makes an attempt to write lyrics that are more mature with a serious subject matter it would probably be a disastrous album but I do want him to grow up a bit and talk about other things in life. I think his material needs more balance there's more to life than just the rap game and whats popular at the moment. He mentions bad bunny and skims by Kim Kardashian just because their popular, then he mentions the tory and meg situation that has nothing to do with him at all. Drake rhymes are about whats popular on the internet, sports, luxury world, rap game, and famous people. Its becoming very predictable and very calculated. There's honestly way more things to speak on...don't just mention religion, murder, racism, abortion, drug use, money, etc go in to real depth intellectually and emotionally about these things and how you view the causes and effects or pros/cons they have on our society. Drake should be talented enough to rap about these things but he hasn't really showcased his versatility content wise. We just want to see him challenge himself more in the booth. He's right about Drake...he has rapped about the same thing over and over and over for the majority of his career. Tell us something we don't know Drake. We see your popular and rich and love mentioning other popular things but what else is really going on in this complex world.

I loved how in depth you went into each track. But I thought I might add that drake does have a sound and that’s the underwater Houston sound that 40 is known for; it can be seen heavily in his older albums “take care” and other mixtapes.

He isn’t interested in making bodies of work. It’s all just fun turn up music. And I think if you listen to drakes music with more of that feeling. More of hey it’s just fun music it’s not deep. I’m honestly so tired of the argument “there’s more lyrical, more challenging artists” I love my kendrick, My westside Gunn etc. but artists like drake make bravado, ego filled masculinity filled music. And I think that’s both needed, And valid. And just as valid as any other album. And I know music is subjective, I understand people will hate stuff like this, But the point I’m making here, is I hate when projects are talked down upon, when it’s simply not for you. I hate country music, but I’m not in country forum and posts trying to convince everyone it’s trash.

I do really appreciate your input and opinions when it comes to tracks. However I feel like this review was rushed and that a rating of 3.5 is honestly a little disrespectful. While the album is repetitive and generic the energy and vibe put into the album is clear. The first few tracks on the album start out with some hard hitting tracks that are great for social environments. BackOutsideBoyz is pretty middle of the line but at least is a little more original than most of the tracks on the album, it would’ve been heavily improved if Lil Yachty added a strong verse to the song since he does all the adlibs. The next few songs are pretty forgettable and the sample on Circo loco feels out of place. Moving on we got Broke Boys a song that rushed over 21 Savage which is unfortunate, drake should’ve went bar for bar with 21 and would’ve made the track more exciting. Middle Of The Ocean is a great song and probably the best writing drake has done in years with some very clever wordplay. The end of the album is also quite strong excluding Jumbotron Shit Poppin (Didn’t add anything to the album in my opinion). On the tracks More M’s and 3AM Glenwood 21 Savage finally gets to show case himself and the songs sound way more indicative of 21’s Raw style. Finally I Guess Its Fuck Me, a track I personally think a lot of people overlook as people tend to stop paying as much attention around the end of the album. The ambience with Trumpets is quite good and although drakes harmonizing goes on for way to long. The song is good way to finish off the album. I personally think this should’ve been the first song on the album as it would’ve layed a way better foundation for the whole “Her Loss” theme. It’s also the only song where Drake really shows humility, talking about a girl that he can keep or let go. Final Thoughts: The project feels very rushed and does lack a originality, another thing that you mentioned is that 21 is not included near enough on the album making it feel similar to any other recent drake project. On the upside the album brings vibes that are strong and even uplifting at times and so some high points at the beginning and end of the album. Regardless if you like the album or not, it’s still worth a listen and is varied enough that almost everyone should be able to find a couple songs they like. My Rating 6.5

To answer your question I think as a collection of songs they are mostly individually interesting in some way but to look at this as an album with a through point there is none and honestly I think that is a larger issue in music today than just this album which is why I think midnights has been so successful regardless of her superstardom. Her loss the album was a flop but the songs on her loss are fine enough considering the sea of uninspired music we live in today

I disagree that Drake doesn't have a sound or anything unique going for him. The 2009-2011 Drake was full of moody atmospheric production with introspective raps mixed in with some boasting and that's was made his music feel real and genuine. I think he got caught with wanting to be accepted by the hip hop community by making aggressive raps and also appealing to every demographic. It's a shame, cuz he really lost his way as a hip hop artist and he had so much potential.

I personally disagree with the spin bout u take, I don't think drake dropping 5 bars about women's right to abortion in a very drake fashion didn't come off inauthentic, I don't think just because he plays victim in post of his love related songs mean that drake simply doesn't care about women, I never doubted that bars were genuine

To answer Volks question at the end, what is WLR about? What is please excuse me for being antisocial about? Great albums without being about something. I like Volksgeist but I think he can be hypocritical asking these kinds of questions since a question as such could discredit almost every trap album. What is Astroworld about? Idk but I think it's a very ignorant question to ask while talking about a trap album imo.
@Volksgeist
@Volksgeist Жыл бұрын
Not at all true bro. You can describe all of those albums in a meaningful way. WLR is a punk inspired album full of sharp, edgy beats. Excuse me for being antisocial is a highly melodic album full of personal stories. Astroworld is a cinematic masterpiece with psychedelic trap fusion. Her Loss is…? It’s really not even a trap album. It’s just random songs. The albums you listed are all WAY better than Her Loss
@hugonordquist2921

@@Volksgeist I mean I think the bar for Drake to make an album considered as great is way to high which I think you would agree on. It's not fair to compare for example Her Loss to Mr Morale since their aiming for completely different things. Mr Morale is not meant to be played at a function in the same way a song such as Broke Boy is meant to be analysed for a bigger meaning. I believe to be able to describe Her Loss in such a way you described the other albums I mentioned in my earlier comment we need to give it more time. But with that said I feel like a album such as Her Loss manages ( in a actually quite fascinating way) makes people living "normal lives" feel like they in the same way as Drake and 21 Savage have accomplished things just by listening to their music. I'm sure I´m not only talking for myself when I say that Drake albums make me in a incredible way feel inspired and motivated just by listening to his songs. I believe that to be drakes greatest strength, making people relate to a lifestyle they never lived and the feeling of being with him through all of his success when actually you are just an listener.

Yeah, I think ‘what is the album about?’ is a misleading question because it sounds like he’s asking about whether there’s a lyrical concept. That’s how it sounds to me, anyway.

Drakes music is hollow, havent really enjoyed any of his new stuff since 2016. Not enjoyed like Kendrik, Tyler, Frank, Jcole and so many more. Its just the same shit on a different beat. Imo hes far been of any real top 10 list. If hes on there its probably because of nostaglia and his old stuff

Yah idk bro, but I thought this album was so bad. Drake and the beats still sound so boring on this. Went to a college football game the other day and it felt like 60% of the songs were Drake or the Weekend, god, fucking kill me. The 30 second Range Brothers was a breath of fresh fucking air. Idk what's wrong with me, I love Carti, Jaden Smith, but I definitely lean more towards the Denzel, JID, Kendrick, Earl, Blue Navy, Wiki, Saba, Griselda, Mick Jenkins side of rap, and Ready to Die is GOATed, buuuuuuuuuuuuut... I also thought JID Forever Story and Kendrick Mr Morale & the Big Steppers were kinda boring even if the rhyming and lyrics and voice were good. I listen for sound, I don't look for or even perceive lyrics properly w/ my brain, and they sounded bland, am I alone? Best recent r&b albums for me were Bo Jackson obv, and Boldy James/Alchemist Boldy Super Tecmo Bo too, Wiki has been so good on standout tracks from his new albums, Greentea Peng Greenzone 108 was good not as good as Man Made maybe though, Mura Masa Demon Time was interesting, Denzel Melt Your Eyes straight fire, Call Me If You Get Lost, Mach-Hommy has been interesting, Freddie Gibbs was kind of disappointing after Big Boss Rabbit :( but sounded okay, Baby Keem Melodic Blue (decent), bbno$ (lol!), $NOT Ethereal, Channel Tres too, fucking love Quelle Chris lately, IDK/Kaytranada Simple., Agat With The Incrowd was cool esp with Zelooperz, Audrey Nuna a liquid breakfast, Larry June Out the Trunk, Little Simz Sometimes-Introvert, Penpals Dimensions of Dialogue was really good, Westside Gunn 10 was decent Science Class was BOMB, and I gotta listen to Smino Luv 4 Rent again but it sounded pretty good.
