I understand, automakers gives vehicles to you guys in a particular configuration (ex. Large optional wheels, most expensive trims), however most ordinary people like myself are not buying the biggest rims and paying for the highest performance models of these cars. When can we see the range testing, hogback challenge, and reviews of the base, smaller wheel versions of these cars that majority of Americans are actually interested in? Asking this question for genuine curiosity and interest. Appreciate the work you guys do, no one else on KZfaq does it, maybe that’s why I’m hoping it’s you guys who can make this change or help common viewers like us. Thank you!

Not a word about stopping in a convenience store with the name Kum & Go!!!! My wife is from Iowa farm country so I'm long familiar with them but I still chuckle and shake my head every time I pull in to one for gas. On a separate note, I have an i4 eDrive40 on order with the optional 19" aero style wheels (282 mile range). My take from others is that BMW is on the conservative side in their range estimates so, the extra mileage in this test is not a total surprise. Tesla, in comparison, tends to overstate range capability.

@@gatveder94 Yes, I got it in late August. Put over 10'000km (6000+ miles) on it. Great great car. I have it in 18' wheels, if I am gentle on the gas, I have over 450km of range in summer at 120km/hour (max speed limit on motorway where I live). In winter, at 0 degree Celsius, it drops 400km of range. - Built quality is really good - Charging is fast enough: peak is not the highest but charging curve is good, including with a cold battery / in cold weather - Technology works perfect, both in car and on the app (only complain is that you cannot see the live charging speed on the app during a charging session - if you are a nerd like me... 🙂) 2 complaints: - Since windows are frameless, side noise insulation could be better - no frunk and the sound system takes up most of the bottom of the boot, lucky the trunk is big and it is a hatchback

It does precondition if the SOC at destination is going to be above 10%. July update will show SOC at destination and will also allow manual control of preconditioning. You can force preconditioning by driving in Sport mode for 5-10 minutes. Never trust EPA, WLTP is way more accurate. The car range estimate is way more accurate if you have navigation active *in car*. It shows a "road" icon by the range estimate number then. 20-21 kWh/100km is about what I am getting on my i4 M50 on highway at about 120 km/h as well.

I never found that my fossil cars were more efficient at motorway speeds. Aerodynamic drag really starts to become the dominant factor at above about 40 mph on a calm day. Best economy was always at around 25 to 30 mph, depending upon the model of car, and equating to low rpm in top gear. The laws of Physics dictate that, whatever some people might claim.

The real key to measure efficiency while driving is looking at your current mi/kWh if that displays on your dash anywhere. For our Audi E-Tron, it shows the real time mi/kWh, as well as the avg. anything above 3.5 mi/kWh is really good in my opinion. Our Audi is at a dismal at 2.3 mi/kWh driving avg 80 mph. Looking at your dash at end of trip 334 wh/mi = about 3.0 mi/kWh. So pretty good, but not the best either. Also be aware, trying to measure your efficiency by just looking at your range at state of full charge vs half charge can vary dramatically depending on a trip. I’ve had many trips where getting to our destinations from full charge gave me huge efficiencies (range reduced only 40 miles on a 75 mile trip), but driving back on same straight flat roads depleted away at all our range (ranged reduced 90 miles on same 75 mile trip back).

Wh/mile is better, the differences are easier to see and more linear. In EU we are using kWh/100km, which maps really well to our brains to compare to liters/100km. The purpose is to be able to estimate cost of a trip by approximating it to 100km chunks. Abstract range of a car is rarely actually useful, but question on how much you'd consume to get to X is more common.

Love this video, amazing work, but I would like to see how the cheaper versions range test! I do and am very sorry! I Apologize for ranting on your Comments section, but I would like to share some of my experience as I use to have an EV. The BMW i4 M50 is a very impressive EV, my only two down fall is the front grille and no frunk, but other than that, it's an EV that is made to simulate like a ICE car, and it can still simulate an ICE performance car, it's even more efficient and more powerful than the very lame and now overpriced model 3 performance the i4 m50 is $4k cheaper and you still get a mobile wall connector and 3 Years of Free Fast DC Charging on any charging infrastructure Thanks to BMW, and you get the EV tax credit! Tesla is a Big NO NO on the wall connector, and they were never allowed the EV tax credit ever again, good luck to those wanting a tesla now as they just keep jacking it's msrp up by another $1k to $2k and FSD which you will never see the Day of Light which is now $12k and is about to get a price increase to $15k. Also I very much Like how I am still in control of the BMW i4 M50 and that it shows you everything on it's i-drive 8 system just like all the other automakers are doing for their EV's, where as Tesla doesn't show it at all and you have to keep bouncing back and forth on the menus and Tesla still controls your Tesla cars even now they control your charging output, my first 3 months on the model 3 performance yeah I got 245kw max at V3 SC, after the next so called suspicious over the air updates and everything, it just never reached that 200+kw ever again! The highest at a V3 super charger was 110kw at a 2% SOC to 80% or 90% SOC. The model 3 performance that I was given was actually another customer who had cancelled out on their model 3 performance, my original model 3 performance that arrived from the Fremont Factory had a massive huge coolant leak that it had to be sent back to Fremont, CA factory. So I was given two option, either take the cancelled model 3 performance, or wait forever again. So what does that show you about Tesla, it shows that they don't give a rats arsh about you, and boy, Oh boy, do I have so many more horrible experience with Tesla Service. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, KIA, Hyundai and every other automakers knows what they are doing, if your an every day hard working daily driver and you want EV please go and Buy from them, Not a Tesla, your money is better invested in real automakers who will care for you, and still give full human interaction, and not automated message system that will screw you over! And it will over charge you for a simple fix Tesla truly owes to fix it for you, but you have to call and try to get a human to fix that automated error and the show full physical proof at their face and finally get it fix after having to wait an entire months wait to get it in for something so simple. To this very day for 2020 Tesla model 3 regardless if it's Performance or the RWD Standard Range, or Long Range model 3, it has been a whole year and Tesla still have not fixed all of their recalls for any of the 2020 model 3 rear harness recalls, where as all other automakers fix their recalls right away, Tesla have use a parts excuse over and over, in terms of which they just don't really give damn anymore. Also that model 3 performance has been rejecting my phone key and key cards to a point to where I just wanted to blow up the damn car, and yes I have tried everything to get the damn car to re-recognize the damn key cards and phone key.

eDrive40 should be up to about 30% more efficient than the M50. I've seen range tests of the i4 before and it seems to not suffer from highway speeds as badly as most other EVs. All versions of the i4 get the same battery pack, with 81.5 kWh usable. With the base wheels the eDrive40 is rated at 301 miles, while this M50 is rated at 227 miles; this means 2.8 mi/kWh (359 Wh/mi) for M50 and 3.7 mi/kWh (270 Wh/mi) for e40.
@KurtSeiffert

@@joeb4294 Actually the M50 with 19" wheels, like I have ordered, are rated at 270 miles and the eDrive40 with the same wheels is rated at 282. A difference of 12 miles or about 5%. So the extra motor/weight of the AWD does not appear to be that big of a penalty.

@forbesjeff 2 жыл бұрын
Realistically, a Model 3 Long Range (Which is dual motor) will do about 300 miles with the 18" wheels, a bit less with the 19s. The Performance will do about 280. The gap between these cars in terms of range isn't that big, though the BMW has a ~10% bigger battery to do it. The BMW is a nicer car, the Tesla is more efficient. The BMWs are set up to have better performance at higher speeds than the Teslas (The i4 M50, for example, is quicker to 100mph than the Model 3 Performance, even though the numbers at lower speeds aren't as impressive). I've got a Model 3 Long Range and while it's quick at higher highway speeds, it has much less punch as you get faster. To say that it is more than adequate is an understatement; even from 80mph+ it'll walk most cars, but it's not a world beater. At normal traffic speeds, the only cars that are quicker are basically other higher performance EVs and exotic cars. Also note that this is the higher performance version of the BMW. There's a step down in performance (Closer to the RWD Model 3, probably a bit quicker) which will get more range.

HUD question. I took a quick test drive at the dealership of a demo i50 and noticed that the HUD flashes when you exceed the speed limit and at one point saw your HUD flashing. Does it stop after a few seconds of flashing or does it flash continuously until you drop down to the speed limit? I found the flashing to be really annoying and won't get the HUD if the nanny mode can't be disabled and/or doesn't turn itself off quickly....particularly given that BMWs are known to have speedometers set to show 1-2 mph over the actual speed of travel.

@@hotrod182 again it’s not needed. Sure they “used” because they didn’t want to put money into a new platform. That is why it is not as efficient in range and space inside. I have been in one and driven one, I was interested, but I want an all ground up EV with a proper Frunk, and a skateboard based battery platform. This has none of that - and it’s not preferable for many to a model 3 - I bought the 22 Model 3 Performance with white interior, which looks great, I hate black gloss plastic used in BMW and many others. Tech and UI is ahead on Tesla. Mine is faster, better range, and superior charging at home or in network. And my performance was $10k less - not to mention that ugly grill on the BMW ended up on the EV… Why? It’s hated by BMW loyalists and others - bad move / - it’s too much like a traditional car for me. Also the sound system is way better in my 3 then the upgraded system in the BMW doing a back to back - I don’t want a start/stop button, I don’t want my infotainment to have to startup every time I get in the car and wait for it. Again traditional car and traditional car thinking - tesla attracts many because it’s such a different experience. To some it’s too different. Good they can stay with a traditional car!

The only problem with the i4 is the delivery time. Ordered mine in February and i just heard from my dealer that delivery is at 12-14 months after order and that i should contact them again towards Christmas... That really sucks. And i cannot believe this is due to chip shortage when they are making millions of phones and other stuff all the time. I believe that BMW just did not predict that people would buy even though there has been thousands of people waiting for a proper EV from BMW for years. I think BMWs problem now is that their management is not connected to their buyers, they are only listening to the rich Asian whales that buy top end cars. They forgot that one of the worlds most sold cars is a BMW 3 series and that is because of the average user and not because of whales. Great video by the way. You guys should check Tesla Bjørns European test too. A bit different results.
