when I posted a picture of me wearing a hanbok, outsiders screaamedd cultural appropriation. I was visiting my boyfriend in South Korea and this was a gift from his mother in law so I could include myself in their culture which was very important to his family. we went to an event together and the people we spoke to loved how I was interested in their culture and how I was learning. of course it'd be a different story if I just bought a hanbok online and wore it to a park without knowing anything about it, but that wasn't the case. also I would've gotten my ASS beat if I didn't accept the gift

Agreed. I was told i was doing cultural appropriation when I participated in diwali or lunar new year. The thing is, I go to a 70% Asian school (about 40% of the school is Indian), and most people in the school would celebrate these every year and I was respectfully participating in the cultures. All my friends from school (I don't have a lot of friends...) are Indian or Eastern Asian. I don't think it was cultural appropriation, yes I'm middle eastern/Jewish (genetically) but I went to a middle/highschool that had a lot of Asian culture and naturally I participated. I even learned common Mandarin and Hindi phrases (a lot of stupid middle school stuff like your mom gay and shit like that haha but also useful phrases, I could get around in China but not hold up a conversation). I don't think it was cultural appropriation since I respectfully participated with people from that culture, right?
@z.6480

@@neb0101 Respecting a culture is not cultural appropriation. In my nursery we used to celebrate Indian/Asian holidays too since alot of the kids in there were from Asia. Even though I am middle Eastern, I still have to respect their culture.

I think the “sad boy” culture is harmful to teens, not the part that lets people show their emotions but the part that romanticizes depression. I think this might actually be a popular one idk
@vixxcelacea2778
@vixxcelacea2778 4 жыл бұрын
It's been poisonous in all generations. Not because it's "teens looking for attention" doing that alone is a cry for help, you have your own issues if you are trying to mimic being sad, hopeless and apathetic, even if it seems fake. But it masks the kids that relate to it from realizing they more often than not actually have depression, and it's genuinely no joke and they should get help. By romanticizing it it takes away the seriousness it possesses. And I know people do this when they don't want to face what they are experiencing. It's a defense mechanism to downplay your issues because especially with mental health, it's a very difficult and trying matter that is not exciting to have. It's just sheer misery. So people feel powerful when they use it as a statement. Take it from someone who in their youth thought it was kinda cool. I didn't realize till adult hood that I suffered. I am no diagnosed and still trying to find therapy/medication combinations that work. I would not wish it on anyone for any reason. And I thought of it as a fad in order to subconsciously block my very real connection with feeling apathy and hopelessness regardless of my outside situation.
@Esoteraeon
@Esoteraeon 4 жыл бұрын
I think the "sad boy/e boy/girl" culture is harmful in that aspect and should only be kept for aesthetic purposes. It's fine if they wanna dress it, no harm, but I see a parallel between the sad e-boys/girls and emos (when I was growing up) glorifying self harm, depression, suicide, and drugs. I was involved in the emo scene in my angsty teen years as an unintentional coping mechanism for actual depression that I got diagnosed for years later.
@iridescentgaming4827
@iridescentgaming4827 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, I tried to reach out to a friend who openly talks about her depression (I do know she's depressed, but I think she likes the attention too) and vent about me having a hard time, but she just replied "Yas queen, depression!" when I need(ed) someone there for me. It was like she was devaluing me because it's "just depression". Edit: I think people have always done this, but in other ways. With the rise of discussion of mental health, more people are using mental health as a way to get attention when that makes other people who are actually depressed look less severe. If I talk about my unhappiness, people just tell me "you're a teenager, it's always like that" or "wait until next year", and people need to get away from those assumptions and comments.
@1z098
@1z098 4 жыл бұрын
yes it definitely can be. the teens who romanticise depression can distract people from those who genuinely are depressed as it scares the kids that suffer from actual depression from speaking out because they don't want others to believe that they're just another kid faking it because they think it's cool. personally, I actually suffered from this myself as I got depression at around 7 or 8 and couldn't tell anyone I knew til I was 12. for 5 years I feared that not even my dad (who I'm very close to) would really believe that I could be depressed as I thought that it would be "self diagnosis". I 100% know that this is an actual issue but I now hate the phrase self diagnosis because it caused me so much pain in those 5 years because people never explained it properly and didn't teach about childhood depression. I felt so alone in those 5 years and I really hope that people will finally start to properly teach children about mental illness in a better way in the future. however, while this period of time was awful it taught me a lot and now one of my goals in life is to help peoples mental health (especially children) so this won't happen so often. to anyone going through any bad situation there is no shame in expressing any concern you have. there's always someone there who will understand and help ♥️♥️♥️

Unpopular opinion; Let's not put people in little molds and think they are all the same! Also unpopular opinion; Don't feel attacked when people do the above unpopular opinion unless your specific group is mistreated by society. As a middle school teacher and a k pop fan, I see both sides. I've had students that were more mature than other students parents, so, not all kids are naive and immature and not all adults are "grown up". Yall will see how harsh adult society is one day, so being an adult is just being thrown into that. And yes, most "groups" don't claim the bad ones, but yall kids would be lying if you can't see why it was said. Yall have seen your classmates and also said comments that grouped people, so don't be upset.

She isn't problematic at all, I agree. Most people hate or make memes of her because she has a unique or "goth" style and people think that's where teens get their whole "fake depression" thing from. Fake depression does happen, and as a 7th grader I can verify that pretty easily, but it's not Billie at all. It's people taking her songs out of context or using "anxiety" or "depression" as a personality trait or a conversation point. Teens just make these memes because some people find the relation or conclusion so easy to make even though their really not related at all. With an influencer who tackles any kind of serious issue (especially mentally) teen audiences wanna have that to seem relatable or have a "cool" personality trait. I think people chose Billie or Taylor Swift because they tackle these issues. It's very indirect and doesn't fall on the artist, but rather the fact that teens think that having mental problems is normal or cool or find happy people to be boring. That's my essay, and I'm probably overthinking this lol.

I agree with you on the fact that she doesn't deserve too much hate because she really doesn't mess with anyone. But winning five Grammys 🤔🙄 at most 3. I don't think she had to work that hard. She never had to become an actress unlike most singers. Or do a side job like promoting a dumb product. It's almost like it was handed to her. But I like the fact that she writes her own at music. Which takes a lot of creativity and inspiration.

THIS!! I never understood people's obsession with anything indie, but the moment something or someone blows up, they're suddenly overrated/industry plants/untalanted etc. And it pains me to think that most people (at least I did when I was younger) never give "popular" a chance just because it's popular nad they automatically label it as bad without even trying it or listening to it. Good music can be both indie and pop and you should enjoy what you enjoy. And that's the end of that.

A polite disagreement: people don't buy Starbucks for the hype, they buy it for the convenience. Sometimes I want a sugary coffee-esque drink I don't have to make myself, and Starbucks is the only decent coffee place on campus. (There's a different one in the student center but they make the nastiest coffee I've ever had.) Most rest stops on highways only have Starbucks. Most malls only have Starbucks. Unless you're living in a city with coffee shops around every corner, chances are that the closest option is a Starbucks. If there was a place near me with better, cheaper coffee then sure I would go there. But there isn't. So I don't. (Also I really like Frappuccinos. Lol if someone has a massive audience, it doesn't mean all those people have great music tastes. Many of them just rides on the bandwagon. Your songs could be catchy, and/or have relatable lyrics, and you might have "worked so hard" to make your voice unique sounding (like those ukelele youtube girls) but it doesn't necessarily make you a good artist, it just makes you a fan favorite. It has to come with great technical abilities, and to bring something really different to the table (it goes beyond the sound of your voice), it's what makes an artist timeless - and deserve all them grammys. If we just gonna call anyone the "best", then being the best doesn't mean shit after all.

@@xdlr22 I mean I loved Victorious and thought her character was really funny but I like to keep these things separate from her songs etc. which is so not the trend atm. I just feel like with Ariana Grande because her music has that generic sound to it any person making covers on youtube getting a decent amount of views could replace her. I don’t mean sound like her. but with Billie Eilish it's just something I've never heard and that's what makes it so intriguing. And all of that while writing and producing her own songs together with her sibling is outstanding. If I play an Ariana Grande song or any of those to my mom she doesn’t even notice or finds it boring (because she doesn’t understand a lot of the lyrics) but once I played a Billie Eilish song she was immediately moved and said woow that’s so beautiful because she comes from the olden days of Aventura and things like that. This is not to say that Ariana or other female artists are not talented. But you have to admit that they follow a very specific pattern of what is hyped at the moment (like for example Asher Angel as well). But then don’t try to discredit when someone does something different, puts their authentic self into a project and people like it. Whenever I try to listen to Billie Eilish's music I end up being so underwhelmed and I'm kind of like 'am I missing something?' since shes so popular. Maybe it's just a genre thing though because I like music that's melody-foreward and hers tends to be really monotone and rhythmic. Plus shes just a teenager so maybe as she gets older her style will change and her singing skills will improve and that'll open up new possibilities for her sound.

About the Billie Eillish thing, she isn't overrated. She makes good music and is a pretty awesome person. People just hate successful people for some reason and try to find ANY reason to hate them. Also, people make fun of the teenage girls in her fandom when literally they just want to listen to the artist. Teenage girls get made fun of for literally anything (i.e. vsco girls who were literally just minding their businesses and started getting bullied out of no where). Unpopular Opinion: Saying the words "paved the way" is disrespectful to artist of any type. For example- Saying Lana Del Rey paved the way for Billie Eilish is wrong. If Lana didn't exist as an artist; Billie Eilish could exist and be successful. One persons success does not depend on the success of another. You don't get promoted at a job just because someone else did it first.

@Sleepy Child A lot of Lana fans say that she popularized alternative music so without her Billie couldn't have made it into mainstream, or if Lana didnt sing soft in her songs Billie wouldnt be allowed to. When I pointed out that other artist existed before Lana that did the same thing - Avril, Joan Jett, Amy Whinehouse, Fiona Apple, Bjorn, Nirvana, The Beatles, Alanis Morissette, Janice Joplin, Green Day, MCR- I got "Those arent the same, Those people arent alternative, they just sing different types of songs." Then when I pointed out that for this current generation you have 3 main female artist for girls to look up to- Bhad Bhabie, JoJo Siwa, and Billie Eilish - 1 Bhad Bhabie (17 in march) who became famous because she was disrespectful to her parents, went on national tv and became a meme. Cusses in every song and wears almost nothing on stage. Sings about money, drugs and degrades women. 1 JoJo Siwa (17 in may) who became famous because her mom pushed her into every single category she could. Making her a child star at 6 years old. Who at 17 years old wears clothes from the kids section at target that she designed- for 5 year olds. And is a walking jar of glitter, Sings about little kid things. 1 Billie Eilish (19 December) who sings about depression, suiside, climate change and is close to her family, telling kids that they can go to therapy, that you dont have to show your body to get attention. I got " you just compared an adult to kids it's not the same" Lana's freaking 35 years old pretty sure 17-19 is closer than 19-35. Then when I pointed out that sales wise Billie did better than Lana- and did better in 1 year than Lana has done her whole career - Lana had 1 top 10 song that peaked at #6 in 2013, she had a silver album- Billie had 12 of 14 songs on the charts, 5 of them have peaked at number 1, and Bad Guy held the number 2 spot for 16 weeks., her album went double Platinum the day it came out.- its met with "Shes and industry plant that's why" when I ask what makes her a plant no one can answer more than "she just is" or "she has family in music" "her parents were well known actors" "she has a lot of money" her parents acted a few background extra parts, their largest project was a film her mom wrote that aired a a film fest that her brother and father were both in. They've done some voice acting, but to make money day to day they were a carpenter and a music teacher at a local place. So they didnt have money, Billie says all the time she grew up going to thrift stores, and her parents moved their bed into the livingroom so each kid could have a room. The only connection to music she had was her brothers band that never really took off. The other day I literally had someone tell me that because shes not black and didnt grow up in government housing shes not poor and is faking it to sale music. A lot of people think it's because she dropped on to the scene out of no where in March when her album launched, but that's not true- I've been following her for years. I heard the first song in early 2017 when I heard Six Feet Under on the vampire diaries and the looked her up and saw that she had other songs from tv shows that I had heard. (Great way to find new music) Sorry- tangent moment. I see that some ways of singing are similar, but Billie said she likes Lana so it makes sense. But she didnt become an artist, work her ass of, preform with multiple sprained ankles and write music in her bedroom because Lana made music. Which a lot of people dont get- the songs on the album and radio were produced in the bedroom, no sound proofing or background singers. She killed the game and started a new one. But that's just my unpopular opinion.
@anarchyvixyn
@anarchyvixyn 4 жыл бұрын
@Ocean Blue her trying had nothing to do with other artist- she didnt try. She uploaded a song because her dance teacher asked her to make one for the class after she got hurt to keep her involved and it went viral-for soundcloud in 2013- that had nothing to do with any other artist. She didnt try to do this because of anyone else, her brother was making music and she wanted to do it to. I'm a writer but I write because i enjoy doing it not because I read someone else's book. And I would still be a writer even if I hadn't read any books because I like doing it. And yes the people I have had these conversations with are being negative. They think shes a spoiled rich kid from LA with fancy actor parents. One guy today literally said "She has 2 parents, shes not poor" exact words. If I could post the screenshot I would. These arent people being misunderstood.
@anarchyvixyn
@anarchyvixyn 4 жыл бұрын
@Ocean Blue yes her brother who wasnt big in music, and had a garage band. It wasnt because he was in music, it's because he was good at it and hes her best friend and she wanted to work with him. In one interview she said she didnt know people didnt just sit around singing with their families. Like they would go on a drive and have a friend with them and everyone sing and her friend would say it was weird. Even more so when she was younger and someone would ask her to sing she would hide behind a pillow because she didnt want the attention. I 100% believe if she hadn't injured herself (her growth plate separated from her hip- fucking ouch) she would have never gone into music in the same way. But enjoying music didnt make her an artist. I know a lot of people who enjoy and listen to music but cant sing and if she couldn't sing in the first place it wouldnt have mattered and that's where I state that one persons success doesnt defined another's because she had to go her own way in order to make it this far. She didnt just sit down, hear Lana and say "yep I'm going to sing" her brother said he knew she had a great voice and wanted to write for her for years but waited until she came to him because he didnt want her to do it because he asked. The song they uploaded (ocean eyes) was written for his band but no matter what they did they couldn't make it work for them. As far as me writing - it honestly had nothing to do with reading a book. True story: when AIM was a thing 20 years ago, I was chatting with a friend who said she was getting off line to watch Xena. I started typing and in About 5 mins had a paragraph that I wrote to make fun of her. She asked me to finish it. I did and i loved what happened when she read it. I feel into writing by accident as a 12 year old being a jerk to a friend. So I understand how you dont mean for something to happen and it just does.
@anarchyvixyn
@anarchyvixyn 4 жыл бұрын
@Ocean Blue were going to have to agree to disagree. I know the butterfly effect, I get what you're saying but I cant agree with it. I cannot and will not accept the fact that the only reason someone could or would do something is because someone else inspired them and without that single inspiration they'd never have done anything. Other peoples work doesnt make me want to write. I dont see a movie and think I should use this. But clearly you dont understand the way some people just can do something without a path carved for them or other peoples influence- which is why my opinion is the unpopular one and why its posted here. Because most people think like you and believe the earth is a divine place where people cant just be themselves just because they are.

“I don’t think there are any fake depressed teenagers” As a teenager, nowadays people want to seem relatable. Especially with girls, it’s weird to see these things fetishised such as having mental illness’ such as anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. People brag about it, because it’s the new, cool thing. I think this is because of millennials posting and being so open about it, and making jokes. This makes others want to have it. @finnorourke4861
@finnorourke4861 4 жыл бұрын
Pamber 13 first off, that’s terrible what you went through. I was just referring to how nowadays it’s “cool” to have depression, and when I say that people fake it I mean people who are like “ Yes I hate public speaking! It’s soooooo annoying, I must have anxiety or something”. The reason I hate people like that is because one of my closest friends has it, and to see people throw it around so loosely pisses me off because he comes in mind. His family is well off, but his parent completely adore his sister and couldn’t give a rats ass about him, and get him to do all her shit. When someone feels sad after something big like a breakup and says I am depressed, because that’s different, I don’t mind, but to label yourself with it and say I have depression is really fucking scummy in my opinion. Again, your girlfriend was terrible and abused you horribly, I’m sorry you felt as if this went towards you, you shouldn’t have to deal with people judging if it’s real or not, if you felt horrible for so long then I won’t doubt it even without a medical diagnosis, but to throw it in a small talk is so common it’s unfair to people like you, and that’s why I get so pissed.

SJBrawlsF2P7 Brawl Stars I do think Billie is good but her songs get repetitive after a while. The beats have a wide variety but her singing (imo) always sounds the same :/ I don’t think she deserves hate and I hope her success continues but five Grammys? I think the awards should have gone to other people. She’s young and has a lot of room for growth

I've seen most True Crime channels and podcasts get Casetify (what you referred to) sponsorships. None of them think of actual true crime as a game or anything, I think they're just taking sponsorships as they get them and it is true that if you like crime stories, true or not, you probably are interested in mystery. I don't believe this is exploitative by default. On the contrary, disregarding sponsorships (everyone needs to eat), talking about true crime can and does frequently highlight egregious shit we should all remember and bear in mind.

Here’s the thing with me and Kpop fan cams: I am a Kpop *fan.* I have been one since I got into BTS in December 2018 and have loved the genre ever since. I do not watch or post any fan cams at all. I personally don’t find them annoying since I’m barely active on any social media platform at all, discord being my main one but I barely go on twitter and I don’t even have Instagram or Snapchat anymore (got rid of them due to personal reasons). Fan cams are allegedly being posted on random threads and that is not ok. It’s not for the reason of, “It’s bad to post things you like!” It’s more of the fact that it’s annoying since you are posting something unrelated to the subject at hand here. I’m not hating on them, I’m just saying that if you decide to post a fan cam/short video of someone from a Kpop group/tbh anything in general, then make sure it’s related to what your attaching it to. But this is just my thoughts and feelings, you can say what you want as a reply if you want lmao

I don’t think Billie is overrated but I do think it’s unfair to say that she created a new genre. Lana del Rey started this kind of music and was hated for it back then. Billie’s music is very similar to it. I’m personally very underwhelmed by her music because I spent years listening to Lana and the way she produces her music resonates with me more. Billie is great, she is mainstream but great. She didn’t create anything new. She just created a new aesthetic based on lana’s music

Can't get that far with a college degree either. Something schools should point out is what jobs will actually be in demand 10 years from when you graduate. Technology and medicine are usually jobs that are always in demand and will be around even when robots take the service sector completely.
