+qurazy Sort of. The internet is a network of computers sharing info with each other. The best way we have right now of sending info across the ocean to other continents is via via fibre optic cables on the sea floor. Should the cables be severed, you would still have the internet, just not as much of it due to no longer having access to the overseas network but only access to your local network.

Americans will be just fine. All of the websites we really care about are operated from servers here in North America (KZfaq, Netflix, Facebook, etc.). The Europeans however, would be quite sad.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, KZfaq, Netflix, Hulu, and just about every other site you use on a daily basis are based on servers located inside the United States. Cutting an undersea cable would hurt the US very little. In fact, the Internet was created with this sort of attack in mind- it's all decentralized, meaning that if one cable is cut, traffic would simply reroute, going through all of the other cables instead. If anything, this would only hurt Russia: You simply can't take down the internet.

Political scientists most often use the term totalitarian authoritarianism to refer to Stalin in comparison to Putin's hybrid authoritarianism. But definitely not to the extent of Stalin. I would put Lenin in more a one-party regime with authoritarian qualities, considering it was defined more by the party and not by Lenin's personal rule. Stalinist Russia was definitely a personal rule, although I suppose one could argue that Putin's regime is more so, considering his popularity and prominence as a figure.

Um, I have consumed the majority of my entertainment between 2002-2019 as stored portable hard drive files, regularly updated, lately using a local Verizon store's ultra hi-speed internet. I have to say, having multiple lifetimes worth of music, ebooks, audio books, music videos, movies, shows, even cool KZfaq vids, does bring comfort, knowing my laptop & phone can both play all said content anytime, but it's also anxiety-inducing, having no 5TB backup drive for everything, my movies are slowly being corrupted on an old refurbished drive I've had 10yrs now...

I see some folks commenting who're shrugging off the threat of internet being interrupted. I think it's hilarious that ANY American really thinks they can make it without internet access. Most of us are so addicted to constant connection/media/noise/info/convenience, etc., we'd freak the F out. Me? I lost internet for a week due to a crazy snowstorm in February, & it was SO GOOD to be disconnected (after a couple days of freaking the F out), that now I intend to take a Week Without Wifi (WWW) once a month. I realized, the internet has essentially handicapped me, & I chose to take my life back. BEST thing I've ever done for myself. Try it! You'll hate it at first, but then....YOU'LL LIKE IT. :)

If we lost the Internet my biggest concern would be my grades. So much of college is online assignments these days, and I'd be surprised if my professors had a physical copy of what my grade was.
