I reopened a General Store in Knob Lick, MO (the Knob is the local mountain in the area and there were one or more salt licks on it the local wildlife frequented, hence the name.) The store has been here by Saint Francois County records since 1924. Its last owner died around 2017 and it fell in to disrepair. I bought in 2021 and worked on it 9 months. We reopened it on May 13 2022. I love it! I enjoy every day here. We still heat with wood and I am slowly reoutfitting it. Stop by if you get the chance.

Nice visit to the Forbus General Store. Stop in for a visit when your in the area. I’m sure you’ll find something you just can’t do without. The food is good and reasonably priced. The conversation is free and usually worth the price of admission. Friendly folks and happy to make you feel at home. Thanks for sharing this. - Tennessee Smoky

Back in the late 60's and 70's my grandma Blanche Jones use to take me up to George baggies country store in tge fairview cemetery located about 4 miles west of jonesborough,TN. I remember grandma letting me get a rc cola, moon pie and some of them about 4" long tootsie rolls. Grandna would also buy some thickly sliced cheese and bologna to make the most delicious bologna sandwiches. On the front porch you could hang out on benches and listen to the old local farmers sitting around telling stories or talking about their farming ventures. My grandpa Joseph Lester Jones kept the burial plot books for the fairview united methodist church cemetery which was located across the highway infron of that country store. My grandpa would meet people at that store to discuss their families burial plots or talk about getting headstones set-up on their families burial plots. Grandpa's Jones,Droak and Woods families had lived in the fairview cemetery since the 1860's. So he knew many of the families that had lived in that community from 1920's up through 2011.

@@theappalachianchannel will do it again. I live in East TN at the foothills of the smokies. My ancestors were some of the 1st to settle in Roane County. Love the channel. I grew up on a small farm in Loudon County. We had a milk cow, killed a couple of hogs each year at papa's. We used an old iron pot on the family to scald the hogs. Pre civil war, the soil from the cave on the farm was boiled in it to extract salt peater (sp) to make gun powder.

Brings back good memories of hot summer days spent at the swimming hole opening that old door and the clang of the old cow bell and the creaking floor as you made your way to the Coca-Cola chest reaching in to get an ice cold Coke with old granny Hawkins smiling behind the counter puffing a corn Cobb pipe ......Out driving stopped in to that old country store Granny long gone cow bell replaced with a Buzzer creaky floor replaced by plywood with a hollow thud Coca-Cola chest replaced with a Cooler blowing warm air with plastic bottles of warm soda selling for $ 2.50 each behind the counter stands a six foot Korean with his hand on a Glock 9 barking “ What you Want ? “ As I turn and leave without a purchase I realize them Hot Summer days and Old Granny Hawkins are long gone the Memories Remain ...........

@@theappalachianchannel are you going to the heritage festival at wilderness road park? If so, head west 6 miles from the park on 58. The store sits right behind the BP gas station. When I was growing up, Arvel Montgomery ran the store and he lived in the house behind the store. The house burned down years ago.My sister and I would walk from our grandmother's house which is where Indian creek church is located today. I believe the house is still standing today. I haven't been back there in several years. We would buy ice cream like Push Ups and eat them on the walk back to grandmas house. They still have a freezer case with frozen popsicles and such. Arvel died years ago. His son, Billy Montgomery and his family now run the store. They sell gas, kerosene, fresh produce, groceries, sandwiches, chili dogs, runyion mix, red band candy(yummy horehound), trailer hitch balls, dog collars, cookware, liniment, hardware, tobacco, garden seed and a little bit of everything packed in this tiny store. The store stays busy and often there's no room to park. My grandfather use to say, if you were looking for something, just ask Arvel and he would have it for you, in a day or two. When my grandmother was elderly (back in the 80's), she would order groceries and they would deliver them to her house. The travel channel was filming Bizzare Foods with Andrew Zimmer and stopped by. I don't remember if they used the footage in the show. It's worth a look. There's a couple general stores up that way too. Closed up these days though.
