4-click issue solved! According to the Cimarron catalog, the Cimarron Model P SAA comes in two different frame styles, the "Old Model" ejector and frame (1873-1896) and the "Pre-War" ejector and frame (1896-1940). The catalog clearly states "Note: All Uberti manufactured Pre-War models feature a modern safety hammer. All Uberti Old Models and all Pietta models feature the classic four-click action." In addition, Pre-War frame Model Ps come with the round Cimarron medallion on the grip, which doesn't appear on the Old Model... a way to quickly determine if a Model P is Old Model or Pre-War. The Model P that Hickock45 was using in this video was a Pre-War frame (with the medallion), thus the modern safety hammer, so only three clicks!

I bought the "Old Model" in 44spl a few years ago and it has the 4 clicks. The metal is harder than the 1860 Italian Colt replica I bought 30 years ago, but it does seem softer and grittier than my Rugers. I still like though. Really pretty cool.

I own a Colt Single Action Army that I paid $1499 for. I also have a Cimarron Evil Roy that I paid $579 for. The differences are as follows: 1) The finish on the Colt is superior. Colt's royal blue is just the best blue finish you can get period. 2) The action on the Colt is smoother and more refined. Cocking the hammer just sounds sharper and feels smoother. 3) The trigger on the Cimarron is actually better and lighter. Is the Colt worth the extra money? For practical purposes honestly no. But for me knowing that I have an original anda tried and true ppiece of history has tremendous value. One I honestly couldn't put a price on.

I have multiple Uberti's, a few Pietta's, and one Colt. I love them all, shoot them all, and have had almost no problems with any of them. I have both black powder and cartridge models, including several "conversion" styles. My great disappointment came when Uberti caved into the paranoid faction and switched their SAA's to the new "safety" feature, which altered the traditional 4-click hammer to a three-click with some sort of newfangled firing pin designed to help prevent accidental discharge. Some say this is no issue, but as a hard line fan of historical firearms, it means a lot to me. From here on in (unless Uberti switches back to the real design), I'll likely be purchasing Pietta's from EMF. Their Great Western II is supposed to be comparable to the traditional Colt, and retains the historic design with the four clicks and the solid firing pin. That said, I really want one of those Standard models in my collection now.
@Someguy6571
@Someguy6571 Жыл бұрын
@@celtblood3 Making the gun a little bit safer while maintaining the same appearance of the original I don't see why this is a real issue. People want to have fun at cowboy shoots with this thing and not have to worry about a chance for accidental discharge. I mean sure I can understand the purest view, but if you want that get an original. I want a modern shooter to plink with at the range. Plus I don't want the design flaws of original firearms. Uberti is also a division of Beretta. So you know you are getting a quality firearm.
@celtblood3
@celtblood3 Жыл бұрын
@@Someguy6571 It's a very serious issue for purists like myself, which I am not a bit ashamed of being. Purchasing an original is prohibitively expensive, plus I would hesitate to shoot an historical firearm the way I would a reproduction. Those of us who know how to handle these don't need a modern safety feature. I'm not going to spend $500 or more for a firearm that's not an accurate design, and believe me, Uberti has a lot of my money from years of purchases. It just is what it is. You don't have to sell me on Uberti's quality, but the altered design is now a barrier for me. They should have at the very least given the buyer a choice, but then they probably wouldn't have sold any of the compromised designs. I own seven Uberti SAA's alone, love and shoot them all, but from here on in I'll be buying another brand that retains the original design (if I can find it, if not I'll only buy the conversions, or I'll save up for a Standard, which may be the best idea anyway.) 😊

Sure they're going to be a better gun, but $1500 better? I'd just as soon buy 2 Uberti SAA and a nice holster plus a Uberti 1873 rifle for the price of one Colt. The Uberti reproductions nowadays are pretty nice. I'd be less inclined to shoot the $2000 gun much. But that is just my opinion

Or just modify the reproduction and bring it up to spec. The Italian gun here had a pretty muddy action and just didn't seem right. A gunsmith could solve that, pretty cheaply too. You'd still be around half the cost of the Colt.

@evolutionglitch4739 5 жыл бұрын
@@larrygall5831 I totally agree on the principal, but it doesn't cost that much to disassemble and slick up the action. For 500 bucks you could get two Uberti's resprung, slicked, and timed. So for the cost of one Colt, you could have two Uberti's that feel/shoot the same after gun smithing and a fancy leather double cowboy rig. I get the appeal of the Colt, just not with my money.

Recently bought a Cattleman series SAA from Taylors because it has a forged (not cast) frame. The bluing is flawless, the case hardening is beautiful, and the fits are absolutely perfect. The action is silky smooth right out of the box. I'm a retired gunsmith and kind of fussy about my guns. This six shooter (I'm fondling it as I type) is just about as good as it gets. Don't know about "acid wash", but the Uberti video I watched looked like they are cyanide quenched. That is a case hardening method. Will it appreciate in value like a Colt? Mmm, probably not, but it sure is a great shooter.

Thanks, Hickok45, for this review. I bought a (used) Colt SAA 45 (2nd Gen.) in 1978 and loved it. When I couldn't afford another revolver for ISU competition in the early 80's, I used it and won several competitions. Even with those abysmal sights! Sadly, had to sell it during difficult times in the mid 80s. Recently I filled the vacuum created by that loss with the purchase of a couple of Pietta products, one of which was marketed by Cimarron. They are both gorgeous, finish excellent, and function just like my long-lost Colt. The one Uberti I briefly owned did not live up to my expectations. YMMV. My only complaint with my Cimmaron/Pietta is the banner on the barrel that states: THUNDERBALL 8 45 Colt.

One obvious cosmetic difference is in the quality of the knurling on the hammer spur. Uberti skimps by using a laser process that looks like crap, whereas the other two apply an actual knurling process. There's a stark contrast in the quality of the look between the two processes . I wish Uberti had spent the $25.00 extra to apply a proper knurling on the hammer spur. It would be well worth it.

Cimmaron does a nice job with their actions and finish. Excellent value for a gun that someone wouldn't be afraid to take afield for fear of getting a blemish. But if one haunts auctions (live, not online), there are occasionally deals to be had on USFA single actions. For those who don't know, these are incredible reproductions of the Colt 1873, manufactured in the original Colt plant in Hartford, Conneticut ("under the blue dome"). I scored a NIB Rodeo, which has the same internals and fit as the high-end guns- but with a satin blue finish- for less than the cost of an Italian clone. Even if someone paid twice the price of a Cimmaron for a case-colored USFA, he would be getting a smoking deal on a firearm that many feel is every bit the equal of the genuine article.

Yes, "acid wash." I couldn't think what it was called. That's the big difference. Sometimes it comes out decently, but on some guns it's very pathetic, and they would be better off to just not even try simulating color case hardening.

Color case hardening, while beautiful, results in very hard, but brittle, metal. There are actually far superior metal processes now than actual color case hardening. Few manufacturers actually use color case hardening anymore. In any case, the colors eventually fade and disappear, just as they do with the acid treatment.
@hickok45
@hickok45 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's more of a "fashion" thing these days, or even for a long time with Colts maybe. It's a matter of trying to reproduce the "look" of an old Colt than anything to do with metal hardening and such, I suppose. Back in the day, though, I have read that it enabled the manufacturer to harden the surface of the metal without hardening and making the entire frame too brittle (causing breakage or failure). The frame needs to flex a little when fired and not be too brittle, whereas having the surface hardened helps keep parts that meet from wearing and scratching the surface, etc. I'm not sure they were even doing it for the "looks" originally, even though it did / does give an interesting and pleasing appearance.
@michaelbrooker1433
@michaelbrooker1433 5 жыл бұрын
Case hardening hardens the surface while leaving the core more malleable, there is annealing after the process to prevent brittleness. In the process carbon atoms are introduced to the surface giving the resistance to wear. The process is also used on machine gears. The acid process also hardens the surface with chemical changes.

I just bought an Evil Roy edition with a slicked up, 4 click action. It isn’t historically accurate, but close enough and smooth as butter. This is the greatest handgun ever made, the Colt Single Action Army. Six bullets, more than enough to kill anything that moves. Now I'll show you why they call me Revolver...... DRAW!

😆. Awesome. I love my 1873 Cimarron (Uberti) Pre-war in .45 Colt. 5.5” barrel. It’s a very nice gun for the money and a fun shooter. I carry around my property just about everywhere.

My cimarron Wyatt Earp Peacemaker model (10” buntline barrel) in .45 LC has 4 clicks- a very distinct 4 clicks. Very tight just like a colt. I have handled many Uberti Cattlemans that only have 3 clicks though-and that kept me from buying them. I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s just not the same feel. Not sure why the cimarron is different than the name brand Uberti but they are.

Thanks for your great videos. Entertaining and educational. The $500 price does not allow for color case hardening. Most inexpensive firearms sport a "color case hardened" finish. Many find the CCH attractive but it is not the best hardening of steel. Some bore solvents will remove the color finish. Craftsmanship is expensive. Uberti should be the base line for comparison. It looks good, functions, and is affordable. The higher end revolvers are show pieces. Less expensive firearms cannot have the hand finish, hand tuning, and level of craftsmanship of the more expensive models. If they did they would be just as expensive. Beretta and Benelli are Italian manufacturers and justify premium prices. Uberti can make a $2000 SAA but it would limit their market share. Inexpensive firearms usually do not have the same metallurgy as more expensive ones. Taurus revolvers are rough on the inside and have softer springs than Smith & Wesson, but at one fourth the price after 10,000 rounds replace the firearm. You know all this but it made me feel good to comment. Thanks again for a great channel.

I used to own an Uberti cap and ball SAA. Yes, you can get it factory converted to c-a-b, very popular here in Poland and in the UK. Gotta say, it is a VERY nice piece, pleasant to shoot, easy to maintain. The price is very nice and, like all muzzleloaders, it requires no licence over here :) And due to scarcity of genuine SAAs in Poland this is very often the only way to lay your hands on one.

Until it gets passed down through the family and some moron takes it to a government buyback program for $300 lol But yeah, most guns won't appreciate too much in value in the lifetime of the owner. I'd say we have modern manufacturing to thank for that, but it did bring a LARGE selection of quality guns at affordable prices too.

@@bw83m94 yup, just like coins; the vast majority do not have a ton of collector value. And the funny thing is that if something is sold to be a collectible, it will likely never become collectible. It is always the guns that were meant to be used and abused in war or were meant to be work horse guns that wind up being collectible. Grandpas WW11 issued 1911 is much more collectible than most commemorative 1911 that are new in the box and meant to be collected.

Nick DipaoloFan Exactly. It's the history and story behind the gun that makes it worth the high prices to people. Not to mention when guns have been used and abused, a pristine example IS rare, versus the safe queen that's never been shot.

My experience is that most people do not shoot enough to justify the extra cost. It is more about bragging rights. Me, give me the $500 model and I'll buy 3 others guns with the change :) My Glocks cost $500 and they haven't failed yet.

@@ArtisanTony I understand the concept of not overpaying for guns and making your money go as far as possible but here is another perspective. Some people would rather have a small collection of valuable guns that they get a sense of pride shooting than a closet full of average or low cost guns. I have no doubt that a $500 Glock will perform just a reliable as a $2,500 Les Baer 1911 but there are other variables that factor in the buying process. Some people are willing to spend much more for a gun that has collector appeal and has potential to appreciate in value, others will spend more for a gun that has custom engraving or other cosmetic upgrades that do not effect the performance at all. I personally only have a small collection of guns but I generally buy collectable guns that go up in value, such as a colt woodsman, Belgian browning SA .22, colt 1911. If you see the pattern, I collect guns designed by John Browning. I assume others buy guns in similar ways. It is not just about the most reliable gun for the cheapest price. You Glock is a great gun, but it will not likely be worth more than what you paid for it in 20 years.
