Just off the Masvingo-Birchenough road, a little-visited set of historical ruins lie atop a small hill. Few people know about them, and even fewer have ever visited them. Which is a pity, because their spectacular setting and rich history make them very deserving of a visit. This dry stone fortress from the Munhumutapa Empire was inhabited by Shona-speaking people between the 12th and the 15th Centuries. Legends of gold, mermaids and even aliens abound, and it has an alluring aura of mystery about it. On a recent trip to the Save Conservancy, I stopped by to check them out. I wasn't disappointed!
