Good video. If you want a true mountain top experience here, do the 1 mile hike over to Mt. Craig which is almost as tall (6647 feet) and have some nice blueberries in summer.

I recommend everyone take the Mt. Craig hike when they visit Mt. Mitchell. You get some excellent views from up there as well.

I'm glad Texas never polluted their mountaintops with roads and parking lots on the mountaintops like one sees in North Carolina/Tennessee (Clingmans Dome, Mt Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain), New York (Mount Marcy), Oklahoma (Mount Scott) and Colorado (Pikes peak)!

Actually Mt. Marcy in New York is a bit of hike to get to. No road leading up that, but Mt. Washington, NH...yeah, there's a railroad and an auto road heading to the summit of that peak.

Whoa! Lots of good facts in this one! That's crazy how the tower changed so many times! I like the way it looks now- especially how the state is etched into the top of the tower w the USGS marker!

Thanks! This was an easy script to write. I ended up cutting over a minute of footage that will make its way into the Season 2 recap because the episode started to feel a bit long.

Even though Mt. Mitchell is slightly higher in elevation than Clingman’s Dome (shared by Tennessee and North Carolina), the observation tower on Clingman’s Dome is substantially taller than the new one on Mt. Mitchell. So, if you are standing at the top of the Clingman’s Dome observation tower, you are higher than at any other point east of the Mississippi River. Of course, minus the man made structures, Mt. Mitchell still reigns in the eastern United States.

You made this climb look easy when in fact it's much harder than Guadalupe Peak. When you start from Black Mountain Campground, NC (like you're supposed to) this is a grueling hike. I enjoyed Guadalupe Peak a lot more and I'm glad I did both. I liked both videos you made on the two mountains but I liked the Guadalupe Peak background information very much. Thanks.

Check out the production order playlist to see how the series evolved. Mount Mitchell is one I want to go back and redo. There was a lot of things we could have done but didn't think to do. Guadalupe Peak is a lot more representative of what the series is now.

Hi! It’s me again. 😊 I just finished this highpoint and am wondering about the man made structure… since highpointing is about finding the most natural highpoint, where is this exactly at Mount Mitchell? It can’t be the geological marker since that is in the man made structure. Is it at the bottom with the sign before you start up to the observation deck? Curious minds…

It's hard with Mt. Mitchell, there have been multiple towers up on the summit through the years. You can't go wrong with Elisha Mitchell's tomb at the base of the current observation platform since he was "buried at the summit."

Shame this was an earlier, shorter episode. A lot more could be said about Mt Mitchell. The story behind the original search for higher peaks than Mt Washington is really interesting. Much like some Virginians thought the Peaks of Otter were the highest in their state, Grandfather Mountain was thought by some to be the highest in NC. The other thing is the geology. Of the 80 or so named 6k peaks in the Appalachians, all but 3 are in NC or shared on the NC/TN border. (Mt LeConte and West Point are fully in TN, and then Mt Washington is the lone 6-er in the north) It is thought that the southern blue ridge may have had a recent uplift (last 40 million years) that resulted in their more rugged appearance compared to most of the appalachians. Mt Mitchell is one of only two ultra-prominent peaks in the Apps, but it is the 31st most isolated peak, and the 4th most in the US.

I hope at some point to refilm a ton of the earlier episodes, particularly season 1 & 2 to make them at least 10 to 15 minutes long. This was back in the day when I thought most people would be only interested in the mountain itself and not some more of the regional stuff. Even with that in mind I don't think I did the Mitchell story justice. I really hadn't figured things out until the Nebraska episode. On a side note if you check out the production playlist you'll really see how the series has evolved.

what's it like climbing these for your camera crew?
@RooftopsofAmerica

My crew usually consists of just one or two other people, sometimes though it is just me. (Virginia.) It's all pretty straight forward. We share the gear load and everyone knows exactly what they are getting into.

Beautiful place and a nice break from the summer heat in the south, but it's sad that the highest point east of the Mississippi is covered in asphalt.

It really is, you don't realize how much until you hike over to Mt. Craig and look back at Mitchell. It's a bit of an eyesore unfortunately.

There are a lot of manmade intrusions marring the view to the south of the peak: power line cuts, 3 service roads along with the main road for the park, the radio towers on Clingman's Peak, and the parking lot is a scar on the northward view. The tower itself also feels a bit pointless. It's too short to improve the view at all. I definitely think some improvements could be made.

my hypothesis is.. Mount Washington (New Hampshire) Mount Rogers (Virginia) Mount Marcy (New York) will be in future Seasons?
