The Berlin FIDE Grand Prix is the 16-player first of three legs of the 24-player 2022 FIDE Grand Prix that qualifies two players to the Candidates Tournament. Each player competes in two of the three tournaments, with the 16 players divided into four groups who play a double round-robin. The group winners advance to a knockout. Tiebreaks at any stage are played on the following day. Players can earn a maximum of 13 points for winning a leg.
Players receive 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one. In case of a tie a 15+10 two-game match is played. If still tied, a 3+2 two-game match follows and then, if needed, an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. If more than two players are tied a round-robin tiebreak is played. Official website: worldchess.com

I watched this live. What a study in the difficulty of the endgame. Even if the computer shows the bar almost entirely in your favor, the game is much closer over the board only one pawn up. Fortunately, no pushups for Hikaru as he declines to go for a draw and goes on to win! It seemed e5 was a moment that really reinforced Hikaru was seeing the possibilities and going for the win! Still, totally worth coming here for Agadmator's post-game analysis!

I defeated Hikaru Nakamura in a small local tournament at an American Legion Post in 1994 when he was 7 years old in the Bronx NY. He blundered his queen. He tearfully stood and shook my hand. His step father Sunil Weeramantry hugged him. At the time I thought cute kid. Who could have guessed he'd end up where he is today? I hear he has a near photographic memory. I wonder if he remembers that game. Somehow I think he does. I've written to him but he's never answered.

For that to happen, all the other players of this tournament have to agree (in order of tournament standing) first. All the other 11 players withdrew to give him the slot.
