From what I've heard from readers of the book, David and Frida are less prominent in the books, but because they are soo popular in the show, they felt they needed to add them into movie and give them more of a role. They were great idea, but fell short on execution. I feel like the movie needed like 10 more minutes, just to bring everything to a close , but that's just me, I loved this movie.
@Renkencen

I can vouch for that (bought all books) as they were super minor characters in the books! Basically the scene when you think Johanna accept the two help to search for Hilda only to droved them back home and asked for Alhberg help instead would had deviated from the book plot! I get why she didn't accept their help thought (didn't want to endangered their lives).

I think they would go for as long as they can, but maybe they are short on budget? They did say that the budget making the show are pretty small comparing to other series, and the movie was originally 70 minutes before they asked Netflix for 16 additional minutes. Maybe that is why it fell short?

Except that when something like that happens in the show (like, all season 2), it is framed as that, as something that unfortunaly happens in real life. Here it is framed as something good, cool, like a sort of redemption for him, while in any other instance it was just him getting the credits. While he was way more humble in here than in S2, he still didn't deserve to be rewarded, yet he was, and wasn't framed as that, it was framed as if he did deserve it

@@drosellie2850 I never got that impression that he was supposed to deserve it. The good bit was him retiring and a much more reasonable and competent character taking his place. Yeah. When self-centered people have the power, this is the best you can get. It really seemed to fit with Hilda being an incredibly well grounded and realistic show within its setting. (kinda reminded me of real life here in Australia a few months ago where one of our state leaders and their deputy retired to spend time with family after a successful career and such things. A lot of the media clapped them off stage. Also she happened to be under heavy scrutiny in a large corruption case at the time, and had done a lot of other stuff I disagreed with too. Sorry for the politics.)

9:20 Swallowing his pride and admitting he made a mistake by resigning is big for a character like that. It was an eyeroll moment for me, like "ok, sure, good for him" but in a funny "goodbye, good riddance" kind of way that felt more appropriately "Hilda" then some sort of karmic death.

I haven't read the comics, but it was my understanding that Erik Ahlberg only appears in Hilda and the Mountain King, with all his appearances in season 2 being invented for the cartoon. He was impulsive and short-sighted, but he was trying to protect the city. The cartoon made him a glory hound. He had met Joanna in the mountains and was the one who told her not to eat those berries, a job given to some random member of the safety patrol since they've already met at this point. The metal might very well be a hold over from that. I can understand him quitting when it was good. He wanted his name to go down in the history books and he had gotten his metal and glory at a point in time that marks a change in Trolberg and might just be self aware enough to understand that he would screw it up if he sticks around any longer.
@wendyheatherwood
@wendyheatherwood 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the way I took the medal scene was that he has just enough self awareness to realise how close he came to causing a disaster, but he's still a dick who wants all the credit and if him getting to retire as a hero will get him out the way then let him.

I honestly liked that they introduced him in season 2 first before the movie, I swear there’s so many films I’ve seen based on shows that introduce a new villain in the movie and either have that villain get killed off, get defeated and disappear for the rest of the series, or become a recurring character afterwards (Recurring villains aren’t as bad as the previous two since they actually have a purpose even when their main story is over, yet there’s still a problem I have with them) The main problem I have with these types of villains is that the movie either never gives them a fully fleshed out character, either because there wasn’t enough opportunities to explore it in the movie or they don’t explore it at all because it will take up too much time, the fact that we already know what kind of character Ahlberg is because season 2 explored on it a little means that it gives more opportunities for other characters to make appearances, like how David and Frida are actually way less prominent in the books than the actual show but they were able to include them as many of the characters had already been explored, so there wasn’t any sort of problems with character development and inclusion, Ahlberg’s first scene in the movie is so casual and takes up so little time cause we already know who he is, so we never have to think about him so much during the movie as it may distract us from some important scenes

3:30 I'll defend that. Even with "life as a troll", we see variety, between them out camping at night, the diamond bell cave, the forgotten troll king's castle and his Smaug-tier hoard, all the different troll groups and their quirks like their unique hoards, all while comparing/contrasting that with the more familiar autumns on the surface as we follow Hilda's family/friends. I never got the impression of the "troll side" being dull.

The issue with the side characters could have been easily solved by making this into a season and not a movie. Given how long is the movie, the main plot would have taken roughly 3/4 episodes, but since they wanted to put in side stories, they could have got 3-4 more episode to make a complete season of some sort. For the Ahlberg situation, I think he gets the medal not cause he deserves it, but cause the people of the city don't know the full story and just think he did good at the right moment...that's my take, at the end of the day he was never really exposed (at least they don't show it nor tell it to us ,if he was) and therefore people believe in him.
@joaomarcoscosta4647
@joaomarcoscosta4647 2 жыл бұрын
I think the issue that Sarcastic Chorus has with the medal is less with the "Watsonian" explanation, and more with the "Doylistic" side of things. Yes, in-universe, he getting a medal makes sense. However, when we are talking about the show's message and themes... It is a bit weird. In most shows, especially on children's shows and stories with uplifting messages, it is expected that the villains will get some sort of karmic ending in proportion to the harm they've done. (Or tried to do). Well, either that, or they go through some sort of redemption arc, in which they realise their mistakes and have to suffer the consequences before coming back on top (or they die in a heroic sacrifice.) But Ahlberg... He neither goes through a real redemption arc nor does he get any karmic retribution. Instead, after acting the whole season like a fearmongering gloryhog, he gets exactly what he wanted, and is lauded as a hero. Which isn't unrealistic. Ahlberg accepting the medal before stepping down is very much in-character, and it kinda fits with the show's tone. (This is far from the most messed up thing to happen in this series) But still... It is a bit of an unusual writing choice. ^^;
@nathanlittle6628
@nathanlittle6628 2 жыл бұрын
Thing is people are too fucused on Ahlberg gets his just deserts- a jerk to be punished. But look at him. He's a glory hound, chasing the need for validation- to prove something to his ancestors. He spends all his time manipulating, antagonizing, doing whatever it takes because he feels that's the only route to glory- and he's just always out of reach of it. But what actually gets him the medal? Yielding to empathy. Ahlberg's obsession with the medal is as much the means he thinks justifies it as the symbolic reward itself. In a fell moment of empathy he claims his prize in a way that contradicted all his previous reasoning- and he responds by yielding this pillar he built his entire being around: his command. Ahlberg gets a lesson- what he doesn't get is a spanking: a penalty or punishment where everyone points and recognizes it. Oh how we do love seeing our bad guys shamed- and doling retribution. But Hilda continually shows how she's focused on righting things, and not retaliation against the villains. They're resisted, but not revenged. Antagonists are faced- and oft the only characters that know the truth are the them and the children. Like the cloud stealing Meteorologist. Hell the Christmassy Krampus episode- the whole point is the wicked kids punishment just escalates everyone's suffering. That's what I love about this show. It doesn't feed us that cheap untruth that hurting the bad people solves the problem- nor does it sugar coat the sour and bitter pill that righting something doesn't retroactively fix all the pain and loss.

Or, you could stop being so starved for all media to be literally propaganda, that you consider it a flaw when it's not. The fact that life goes on separate from the focus you wish to call "the plot", should be and IS part of every story. It's just more show, don't tell: you could TELL a person is injured by having them wail about how they are injured, or by showing it. But even further, you can SHOW how a person's life, their family, hometown, moves on as she herself is not present, or you can TELL yourself a big handwave of "I guess they've just got their own shit to deal with". If you're out "adventuring", how worried your family is, IS part of your "adventure". It should be as obvious as taking a dip and getting wet for it, and these side stories are a way of showing it.

I disagree about aulburg. The vision was clarity to him. Having a vision of his mother calling him. He understood what the trolls are and what he was doing. "Stand down" kinda hit me hard as he saw that his fear mongering was literally keeping a bunch of kids away from their mother. Considering a major theme in both the Hilda movie and show is empathy, I thought it fitting for empathy to be the reason aulburg would realize his glory seeking actions were wrong and the reason for him to stop. Also Looking at his face getting his medal and taking his hat off. Strikes me as more of a look of uneasy shame. He knows what we the viewer know, he doesn't deserve that medal. But he's too high up the towns leadership to convict after all in the eyes of quite a few people, the safety patrol saved the town. Hilda has always been surprisingly nuanced for a show aimed primarily at children. No character is simply a force of good or bad Aulberg was no exception. He's frustrating, but he's an example of the sort of arrogant grifter we'd expect from a world like this. Coming from a long line of troll hunters, seeking a way to live up to his family legacy while trying desperately to keep the world simple. Humans good, trolls bad. Hell, before season 2's ending I thought trolls were closer to bears than people. And the show treated them as such. Territorial, yet not inherantly "evil". They struck me more as part of the magical nature rather than a culture with music, games, social structures and community. That was me as a viewer who saw hildas interactions with them. Nevermind if I hated magical beings like the average citizen of trollberg, let alone aulburg.

One thing I remember from S2, was when Hilda asked the Rat King to get Aulbergs secrets, and remember what they said? They found nothing. The reason Aulberg was such a glory hound was because he hadn't accomplished anything on his life despite being a descendent of the revered troll killer. He of course tried to do that by getting rid of the troll menace, Hilda's intervention was what let him see the Trolls as something beyond his success

They put so much effort into making these two valid additions to the show to the point they have frida learning magic with hilda as her familiar(basically animal sidekick). Even with all that these two still aren’t as compelling as hilda. They’re good characters but they do suffer when hilda isn’t around and this film shows that better than any other episode.

You'd think they'd have some grand backstory segment about Erik Ahlberg, if the audience was supposed to believe he'd suddenly chance his mind after his weird need to rile trolls up for fame. Even one line like "...Mother? Where are you!? It's me, Erik, remember? I'll soon be as great as my ancestor, You don't have to protect me anymore" before being attacked by the illusion trolls and seeing his mother would make his actions way more understandable. I just assumed he changed his mind after overwhelming evidence that Hilda spoke the truth, sort of like (for the sake of argument) if an Atheist was faced with undeniable proof of a god. Now granted one could argue even then Ahlberg may have been protrayed as too prideful to even make that concession if he felt looking competent to the townsfolk overrode not getting the town destroyed, but I read it as he knew the town would definitely get destroyed if he continued, so really there was only one option left, even if it wasn't his preferred one. Hard agree he didn't deserve a medal though.

@@gregvs.theworld451 I felt that Ahlberg's change of heart was prety well done. When he orders his troops to stand down he appears completely defeated. He knows now that he has lost, his attempt at glory seeking has led to catastrophe and the only way to salvage the situation now is to make peace. And Ahlberg is nothing if not an expert at salvaging bad situations he got himself into. As for the medal, he is precisely the sort of person that would go for it, and most of the city would have no reason to think he was anything less than a selfless hero that faught to defend the city and made peace when he had to. Without the context we as the audience have, he would seem prety heroic. I guess the lesson here is that people dont get what they deserve, and maybe that dosnt really matter in the end.

My biggest concern we won't have Ahlberg as a malicious force in the show, and it could get a bit boring without his dumb ideas that threaten everyone. I know Hilda is a malicious force that has the ability to attract any event that can cause the end of the town/world...and she is doing it for dumb reasons... ? Oh my god Hilda is Ahlberg confirmed.
@napoleoncomplex2712

Hilda isn't malicious. She's thrown herself into mortal danger on other people's behalves repeatedly, and has even saved the town a few times when she didn't need to stick her neck out. She's impetuous, overconfident, and frankly arrogant at times, but there's no denying her heart is in the right place. If Hilda didn't actively seek out every possible source of danger within 50 miles, Trollberg wouldn't even still be on the map. She and her friends are a magical police force in miniature.

@@MRDLT00 we already saw that a lot of the people in trollberg still aren't happy with trolls being around, and that some trolls aren't very fond of humans. Im sure we'll see a bit more about Troll-Human relations before the show introduces another big bad.
@napoleoncomplex2712
@napoleoncomplex2712 2 жыл бұрын
Remember that in Season 1, there was no 'big bad'. The closest we got to it was Victoria Van Gale and the Hound; the former was a setting-threatening menace who needed to be stopped, but was neutralised in one episode, and the hound turned out to just be misunderstood. Hilda as a show isn't predicated around large, series-spanning conflicts. Its charm for me at least is more in exploring its setting and the troubles and quirks of the population therein. That said, I would like to see Hilda confront another real villain like Trundle before the series' end, if only to see what our scrappy little protagonist and her friends can do when backed into a corner. I'd like to see all the lessons Hilda has learned; about honesty, about *grounded* trust in others, and about thinking things through and making plans like Frida does while still maintaining all the strengths we've seen from her throughout the series; her outstanding bravery, initiative, silver-tongue, and her most important trait, her ability to empathise and instantly connect with others regardless of their background and circumstances. She doesn't have to be perfect about it (that would make her a mary sue) but if she just shows some signs of learning a little from her mistakes; being honest and forthright with her mum or with another adult at one critical moment which saves the day, drawing back from a bad decision because she realises it doesn't feel right, applying a moment of critical thinking before trusting someone she doesn't know; if Hilda can show that she has grown, if not to lose her flaws, then at least come to terms with them by the end of the third season, then the show can close on a truly high note. Having a truly formidable villain that Hilda *still* overcomes through help from her friends and through everything she's learned would be a powerful sendoff for that.

All the problems, that you’ve mentioned, like sidekicks having nothing to do, are in the movie, because of all the stuff that have been added in the show. There are no Frida and David in the book. Albert is another character completely (and he actually wasn’t awarded in the book, that scene is only in the movie). In the books the brother of the mountain king plays bigger role, cause he is the one to explain the story of troll’s mother. The colours in the comic are really interesting in my opinion, cause the main palette is not dark blue during the troll attack, but red, and this is more appealing visually. So yeah, the book is brilliant! Highly suggest you reading it, as well as the whole series (the movie is just good in my opinion, a lot of things are holding it back sadly)

What I would have changed in the film's story: Trundle's brother was the Mountain King and wanted to live in harmony, but Trundle rose up against him because he wanted to attack Trollberg. Trundle was able to gather enough trolls to his side and the brothers fought, leading to the war that crippled troll society. This set-up is pretty classic and kinda cliche, I admit it, but it would've given Trundle's brother a lot more character and the movie could've given him more screentime while sacrificing some parts of the movie that were there just for padding. Could've cut out the subplot about David and his mom, since I also feel frustrated that it didn't go anywhere and had no pay-off. Though I don't know how the story was in the graphic novels and how faithfully the movie followed it. I love Trundle's brother's design, I just wish we could've learned more about him. And maybe we do in the season 3, if there really will be one. Maybe he will actually become the new Mountain King.

I think they kinda HAD to do something with Erik. One of the people working on the show mentioned on reddit that the movie was written with a solid closed ending, because at the time a season 3 wasn't greenlit yet. They wrote the ending to be closed because they felt that an open ending wouldn't be satisfying for viewers if the movie was going to be the last piece of hilda. So if i had to guess, Erik stopped being a villain at the end of the movie because it would be an open ending if he stayed in power (this is speculation tho)

07:22 While I agree that Johanna is only the worried Mother, I kinda understand why they wrote her like that in the movie. Unlike us, the audience, she doesn't know that Hilda is somewhat fine and having fun, that Trylla/Momma Troll didnt switch out of malice, but out of fear and thinking that Hilda would enjoy it. For Johanna, for all acounts, her daughter was kidnapped and is a around beings that can be violent. Everytime in the show that Hilda was in trouble, Johanna would be worried, this time is worse because Hilda cant come back in the end of the Day. And its worse when you remember that, in the season 2 finale, they just begun repairing their relantioship, adding salt to the wound. And this role is a parallalel with the Troll Mother, away from her children, unable to bring them close. Johanna is also a mom that is being kept away from Hilda, not being able to get her back. Really nailing the empathy and paralalel, themes of the show.

The mother's spell was so heartbreaking to me. She just wanted her child safe, saw there was a human that could handle trolls without the need of weapons... it honestly reminded me of the mothers that sent their kids off into the safehavens during WWII. The ultimate choice, and the ultimate sacrifice. And I honestly would've been fine if Hilda wanted to stay a troll, to really emphasize that the mother troll did the right thing in her own eyes, and seeing her heartbroken so early on really was emotional...BUT! having Hilda want to be a human again was a nice decision. Good trope break right there. Also, I was wondering why the trolls were only rocks!! I've always known them as having grass/leaves/flowers/etc. on them, so seeing them get the Troll Mother's touch being the reason for their bloom was really beautiful. This just really makes me want to get more into Scandinavian folklore, and pull a ton of inspiration of these wonderful creatures into my d&d campaigns. Also two notes rewatching. When Johanna first gets confronted about being outside of troll berg by the officer they shifted the camera to note his hand on his weapon. Was this supposed to be an allusion to police brutality? Because if it is, it gives a bad message of just be compliant and the police officer won’t beat the shit out of you? If it isn’t the the particular camera shift would make no sense. 2nd, When Johanna was hunting for the cave and Alberg shows up before their team up he doesn’t check the mountain instinctually. Instead he sees a pigeon trying to enter the crack in the mountain and goes “That’s Genius!” Mind you he actively decided to also walk towards the pigeon even though he was hunting for trolls.

I figured that the point they were trying to make was that the Safety Patrol was on high alert due to the increasing troll activity, leaving their officers antsy. I actually kinda like the mountain kings plan if it’s considered just his plan to provoke the city into war to get the mom to wake up and protect their side. I think he didn’t believe that the weapon could kill him, but that the wound and ensuing battle would cause enough troll death/harm to wake the mother. If it was a sonic beam with a massive bell noise for example, then firing it may have been enough to get her up on its own, but he’d never seen them weaponize light before, so it could be perfectly reasonable for him to think the weapon was noise-based and would hurt immensely but not kill(if this was the intent, a single line of dialogue could have affirmed this). I also think he believed that the people needed to attack him first in the stalemate, because the mother wouldn’t wake up to protect them if they themselves were the aggressors. (Wich I admit is a little dodgy considering the bell tower workers who are unquestionably dead). My last point a lot of militias-style armies should to be led from the front by the person who frothed their rage. If the mountain king is leading the charge, more trolls will unquestionably follow than if he wasn’t, so he had to be on the front lines. And, if it appeared he was in control of the situation, the mother would have no reason to wake up, because her children are fine and don’t need protection, and if she disapproved of the harm they were causing, than she’s also conscious that her sitting up would cause more, and she would probably communicate with them psychically to stop.

Hilda's definitely going to experience some sort of trauma down the road. If I had been kidnapped out of the blue, turned into a troll, told the effects were "permanent", and that I'd never EVER see my mother again (especially at such a young age), I'd probably be scarred for life too. Not only that, but I wouldn't've been so forgiving of my former captor after all is said and done (even if their intentions were "in the right place"). I'd probably distance myself from them just so the PTSD wouldn't kick in. And Hilda still understanding the trolls after switching back to being human (while seemingly beneficial), will only add as a troubling reminder of what happened. And I know what you're thinking: Hilda said, "Well, that was traumatic. But, such is the life of an adventurer". Keep in mind...she said that BEFORE any of the traumatic events she'd experience later on in the series. It's one thing to go off on an adventure, and seeing troubling sights, but Hilda was at least able to go home and feel safe at the end of the day. Having that sense of safety and security suddenly being taken away from one's self would traumatize anyone (regardless of how "tough" they are, or at any age). Yes, Hilda is a tough, adventurous and resilient kid...but she's still a kid nonetheless. I honestly hope Season 3 touches a little bit on that just to acknowledge how hard it was for both Hilda and her mom. Maybe even show a process of healing. I think that would be pretty interesting.

Honestly, I think this is a pretty solid review. You make some good points on the characters and the plot. One thing I will say (and a few people have already said it) is that David and Frida were not originally major characters in the books. But, because they’ve become fan favourites, the crew probably felt that they couldn’t just leave them out. Still, I do think Frida had some good minor moments with her magic skills and gaining courage. I totally agree with you about David and his Mom though. I think they could’ve had a brief conversation between them just before the boulder hit the bell tower. And, of course, I’m totally with you about Ahlberg and the medal. It just felt like a convenient way to write him out of the series. Though, it did provide a logical next step to Gerda’s character arc which I appreciated. Finally, I’m kind of sensing that a lot of what they seemingly shoehorned into the movie is going to be plot points for Season Three, like Trundle’s brother, Frida’s gained confidence in herself and her abilities, and Kaisa’s explanation of how Witches don’t like to get involved in Troll affairs. I have a suspicion that these will be explored more in Season Three, especially with what they set up about the Witches and how their magic works in Season Two. There is very obvious potential there, and I believe Luke Pearson himself said that Season Three is going to have a more overarching story than the first two seasons. I think that the world they’ve set up with the Witches (which was not in the Graphic Novels) might just be the focus. Either that or Hilda attempting to learn who her Dad is. In any case, hopefully Season Three will be better than we expect.
