We are all here because of our love of the wilderness. Be it the cool crispness of Canada or the humid bush of Australia. The peace and sense of grounding is important to us. And if you lost that sense Mark then we all would suffer from your loss . Your joy is what makes these videos. Thank you for your efforts and time .

I’ve gone camping and backpacking since the late 60s. When I retired from the US Navy, it was an opportunity to get back where I had left off 26 years earlier. To my surprise, the technology of equipment had changed a great deal. So I started looking into all the new equipment which ultimately led me to watching KZfaq videos… for gear reviews. So while Hhiking using my new gear, I thought I’d make a couple of videos with my iPhone, which led to me buying a GoPro… down that rabbit hole! After watching my own videos, and some rudimentary editing, I realize that I was not skilled in doing such things. In greater observation watching KZfaq videos, I appreciated the full effort of you Mark, and many others, to the extent of what it takes to produce a worthy consumer video. But more over, I realized it was necessarily robbing me of my first love of just being out in the forest for the peaceful solitude it provides. So I abandoned any thoughts of actually having a KZfaq channel. So thank you Mark for just getting out there in the forest and enjoying a cup of carefree coffee.

Looking forward to more fireside chats, Mark. It's something we all need.

no question, reviews can be very helpful. personally I enjoy hearing about the mundane things as much as the fancy new stuff: your walking stick, the bread-bag haversack, your choice of socks, etc. but just being out in the woods is great too, and for most of us that’s the heart and soul of a bushcraft channel. 👍🏼✌🏼🖖🏼

I've been enjoying your content for many years. In the beginning I was searching to learn survival skills. I've learned many things from you. I never knew about pine pollen, what wintergreen looks like in the wild, or what Labrador tea is. During the country wide quaranteen I suffered a severe knee injury, so then my interests changed to making a camping experience in my own backyard. My hiking days are over. Watching you in the forest making a fire and coffee is fuel for many fond hiking memories and daydreaming. I have hopes that one of my ten grandchildren will desire a camping/hiking lifestyle. I have many fine gifts to share.

I like both types of videos. I think gear doing gear reviews provides a great service. The fireside chats are more relaxing. Great work.

Oh man Mark, what can I say after watching that other than I am truly humbled and honored to count you among my friends. You gave me the first relevant to my area knowledge about mushrooms and foraging that sparked a huge interest for me to pursue which evolved into a deep passion for the natural world. I watch all your reviews even if it's not something I'm all that interested in because I always learn something from them. You know I'm not a big spender when it comes to gear but when you review products in the detail you do it gives me inspiration to craft something similar or workable for myself, or to add to my Christmas/birthday list haha. Hi, Mark. I don't write comments to every vid I see and watch so many of them these days. Now the crisis of the pandemic is over I find myself quite busy(I own a restaurant). But I am watching your contents. I know you have been very busy doing reviews of various ptoduct. Making those vid is a lot of WORK. I say WORK because doing all that leaves you so little time to enjoy what you do in the woods. I think I told you a couple of years ago that I would like to see you out in the woods doing your things for the sheer joy of it all. I got my wish, and I see you got yours. I used to own a fishing tackle shop and a charter fishing outfit. I took to sea, lakes and streams about 100 trips every year. I did a lot of fishing with my clients, but every once in a while I had to go out just by myself because I needed to get to enjoy myself. I get you and appreciate what you do for us. We do love your gear reviews, Mark, but I think a lot of us come back to this channel because of you are as a person… You have a quiet confidence and a humility that I think put a lot of people at ease. Like others have said in the comment section, we would love to continue seeing your reviews, and if you want to go in the forest and just walk around and kick the leaves and look for mushrooms, we’re going to be there along with you as well. And no, you are not a corporate sellout, you are just very good at what you do and companies trust you, as do your viewers. You present information in a clear, concise and objective manner. Nice video and chat. Your reviews and suggestions have helped me choose kit which has been great but getting back to simply showing nature is always the main thing. Mark you are one of that rare breed an authentic warm genuine guy with honesty at your core, like many I find your videos insightful , inspiring and best of all entertaining , I never feel pressured to buy anything as a result of watching them though on ocassions I have indulged , the titanium Kessel pressed my WOW button, but Ti is one of my weaknesses so I can't blame you for that. A few other wilderness equipment reviewers have had to take a break from the onslaught of equipment review deadlines because they were reaching that dreaded burn out , questioning why what was once a joy had become a chore. Your strategy to incorporate the essence of why the outdoors is so compelling alongside product reviews is much more understandable and most probably sustainable so I thank you for that , I had feared you were going to say goodbye at the start of this video. And on a selfish note before you had reviewed that ridiculously expensive but utterly gorgeous Keith Titanium teapot I mentioned previously . I would love your take on something that has feel good factor , keep up the great work and play a little more often ,that should recharge the batteries .

Hello Mark. I respect your sharing about your journey and how it changed. You were one of the first bushcraft KZfaqrs I watched that got me so interested in and excited about the outdoors and I learned a lot about gear and what someone could do or make or modify who didn't have 1) the knowledge and 2) the budget to purchase high priced items. When i watched your Ikea hobo stove videos, I went out to the thrift store and bought one. Same for the colander and steamer. i didn't know what an alcohol stove was or a wood stove or a kelly kettle or a mora knife. I learned how to tie a blanket and how to make a walking stick. I really enjoyed the comparisons you did between different stoves- DIY and purchased. You made bushcrafting and camping something that was attainable for ordinary folk. For that, thank you. Over the last couple of years, I certainly noticed the increasing propensity for reviews and I felt rather saddened and, to be honest, I began to watch less. It's not because you had less to say, but because a product review is not the same as a friendly chat you might have with someone who shares the same interests and it is not the same as sharing your heart-felt knowledge and passion doing what you love which, in my humble opinion, is what made your channel stand out. I reread your "About" page and the meaning of "Shunpyke". While I would certainly not suggest that you (or anyone) stop reviewing products-- as you said, we need honest reviews-- I hope we will see more videos of you sharing with us what you love to do-- getting out in the woods and enjoying the road less traveled by. I loved your Bannock recipe, but can no longer have grain...if anyone has an alternate recipe, I'd be thrilled! I love the DIY videos, and cooked my Bannock in my dog bowl oven I made from your tutorial. I love the simple time-in-nature-and-a-coffee videos. I know about going off kilter for content. You and I enjoy some of the same things. My Dad took me mushroom picking in about 1962, and I bought a #4 Duluth Pack when I started camping with friends in 1970.

A trick i learned working in the bush was to put the grounds directly into the cup, pour the boiling water on, allow to steep, the pour a little bit of cold water into the coffee. It makes the grounds sink, and also cools it down a bit from boiling hot. I still do it when camping moreso for nastalgia than anything else.

Hi. I enjoyed this video quite a bit. It was nice to hear how you started your channel and how it evolved. I think the first video of yours I watched was how to make a walking stick…like the one you brought out on this hike. At that time, I happened to acquire a perfectly sized tree trunk from a small landscape tree that didn’t make it. I followed your video to make my own walking stick…so thank you for the occasional “How to make it” video. Many of your product review videos are of interest to me. For example, your review of the Nitecore nu25 ul was very timely as I was looking for a rechargeable headlamp. I now use mine daily for nighttime outside chores and think it is great. I am sure many other brands and models would work just as well, but your review helped me make a decision, and I thank you for that. Now that I have my headlamp situation taken care of, I don’t always watch each of your other flashlight reviews (sorry). But most of your review videos are of interest to me because your honest opinion definitely comes across. And what I really like is that you provide valuable generic use case information for the class of the specific product you are reviewing. Thank you.

I have learned much about outdoor gear from your channel

I like your coffee in the woods videos. Wouldn’t even need to show making the coffee. I got into “bush crafting” videos because the scenery is relaxing. I work in an office inside a warehouse. The only outside views I get are through a small window in an overhead door. I haven’t organized myself enough or prioritized getting outside, even if it’s just a city park. Do companies have a clause about selling the gear you review? Probably too much work to sell the stuff yourself. Maybe someone with an Etsy or eBay store could sell them for you. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge with us.

This video says everything you needed to. Keep doing the work you love, don’t mind the negative Nancy’s out there. Turning something you love doing into work is always a dangerous thing, so do what you need to continue enjoying it. I fell into that trap with cycling, ended up working as a mechanic in one shop for a decade and hated cycling and everything about it by the end. Took ten years of not even owning a bike for me to want to get out and do it again.

Mark, I'm very glad to see you get back to your roots and get recharged. There is just something about being out in the woods that is good for the soul. It encourages me to see your videos on making your own gear and thrift store economy. Regarding your review side of your channel, I trust your honesty, consistency and attention to detail over anyone else I know.

There is another way to get a stimulating and energizing liquid, which is instead of using coffee, take Guarana, it is a bitter powder like coffee, it can be taken with cold water, and the effect is instantaneous, it lasts two and a half hours, and it is a great solution when you want something stimulating and don't want to light the fire Guaraná is a stimulant that they already used when the Spanish arrived in Brazil. The indigenous people hunt in the Amazon, since they cannot transport food with them, the hunt can last several days, what they only transport is Guarana. It is a safe food, and is very similar to the coffee bean I get it directly from a tribe in the Rionegro, through a French distributor, it is a completely organic product and is harvested from the Amazon River itself. You have been very prolific with your videos lately. I for one have really appreciated your reviews and have avoided or purchased items that I was interested in on the back of your reviews, today I purchased a Mora knife having watched your reviews of three Mora knives, I have one already but it stays in the car for emergencies and wanted another for my bushcraft kit. I sometimes feel that some companies seem to blitz you with gear, for example Fire Maple and I have wondered wether that puts pressure on you to review all that gear. I have watched your channel for quite a few years now and watched videos from way back, just joining you by the lake or the woods or for some bushcraft and cooking was and still is a pleasant experience. I haven’t been in the woods as much as I would like for a while as looking after Mum has taken more and more of my time along with a hectic and demanding working life. I was slightly worried that at the end of this video you going to say you were going to stop making videos, pleased you are going to carry on. Making time for yourself to be in nature is important though and I must do the same.

Thanks for your videos! Kudos to you for all you do on your channel and elsewhere. I heard you say that you prefer bottom up lighting and was surprised. I know you have lots of experience with wood stoves. I don't want to disagree but my experience is different. I like top down because you can load all the wood you need for a meal, (my own designed small stoves will burn over 30 minutes with hardwood) and not have to fuss; you can place any needed pot supports in place before lighting so no risk of burning hands when trying to place with a flaming fire; I think lighting is easy too because you just light the tinder you have gathered on top of the fuel and let it go, Yes you don't get the immediate big flame from a 'pile' of twigs and bark but it burns beautifully on its own after just a few minutes - the same time as is needed to get solid fuel loaded with the bottom up method. By the way I designed my stoves years ago. They are basically a piece of sheet SS formed into a cylinder when the ends are connected with a tab and slot - windscreen style. I can get a diameter of 3.5" to 5" to fit different pots because I have multiple slots. Three extensions of the metal at the top support the pot above the fuel and flame. Holes in the side allow air and pot supports at different levels. These same supports (tent stakes) can hold liquid fuel stoves and intermediate heights in case you don't want to burn wood. The stove is less than 3 oz., is large capacity and disappears in my pack as I wrap it around my water bottle for storage. Sorry to bore you with all the detail but I enjoy them and just wanted to share with another 'stovie'. I think they are among the lowest weight and lowest volume pack space high capacity multifuel stoves.

We all deal with the small bit negativity which like the rest of us, just let it roll off our shoulders and concentrate on the good people and good intelligent comments. The vast majority of us realize the effort, time consuming editing and scripting features. I couldn't tell the difference between your cell or the cannon camera. Both are very good. I tend to wait with many things but when I see your tests, on some things I've been looking at of late I'll make much more of an educated choice. Keep em going! You need to do what gives you joy, kudos to you. I retired and do leather work on the side. People say you should open an Etsy store and have a web sight. That would be great but then I would no longer be retired and doing leather work when it fulfilled my joy but toiling away to fulfill joy for someone else.
