Hinderer Knives XM-18 Gen 6, Tri-Way Pivot: A whole new era

It's easy to over-use a term like "game changer", however I believe in the case of the Hinderer Tri-Way Pivot system, it is a fitting description. A seemingly simple solution, yet it's really never been offered before by any popular knifemakers, the Tri-Way Pivot system allows the user to select a pivot style to fit their personal needs or desires. Fast and smooth bearings, or more "tough" and resilient solutions in washer styles (both Phosphor-Bronze and Nylon), you make the choice and install whichever works best for you. Add to that a new detent tune, and this new generation of Hinderers flip like you've always wished they would without giving up on their legendary toughness for hard use in the field.
While Hinderers are available pretty much anywhere finer knives are sold, you might find DLT Trading of particular interest because they have some interesting exclusive offerings that aren't available elsewhere: www.dlttrading.com/rick-hinde...

Hey Jim, its me again. The guy who always has to hide from his wife in the bathroom to watch your videos. Pretty excited to see this upload. It was both enjoyable and lengthy. My wife has been pounding on the bathroom door for a while now. Through naturally reactive exclaims like "UGH!" or "JESUS!", I have once again bought myself the time I needed to enjoy your content. Thanks again!

Thanks for the review. I have owned 3 Hinderer's, but sold them all, mainly because they lacked the features and action that this has. As soon as they release the wharncliffe or slicer version, I am getting one. I am usually not a fan of black coated blades, but the black blade with the black lock side and green scale is an awesome color combination on this knife. The other thing I like about Hinderer, is that he keeps adding features and quality without increasing the price.

Great review! Just got my first Hinderer - Skinny 3.5 Harpoon. Still breaking it in. Detent is strong on mine. It finally opens, but not fast. Not possible to use thumb studs - hoping eventually I will. Very well built and solid knife. Love that wharcliff blade. Waiting for a Battle Black variant for my second. Ergo fits my hand great and the choil gives me two grip options. Satisfied with my purchase.

Thanks for the review Jim. I love the xm18 platform but upon the release of the tri way pivot I sold all 3 of my Hinderer folders because I knew it would be next level awesome. I had one question, with the detent is it still possible to use the stop lugs as thumb studs? I always like to fidget with my flippers and love flippers with other opening methods. Anyways, thanks again for holding me over until mine comes in the mail Monday.

The XM’s are hex head, not Torx. The Screws used in the Eklipse, MP1, Halftrack, and Jurasic are T6. And the Sheepsfoot blade used in the XM uses Eklipse hardware so those are T6 also. But Chris is right in the XM screw sizes.

I own a XM-18 Gen 6 No Choil 3" Slicer and several Gen 4 in 3.5" and 3" Slicers,....and have a Skinny No Choil Gen 6 3.5" slicer on the way due to me in 2 days. But as a knife meant for hard use,...and even possibly a little "Bushcraft work,....I still prefer my Gen 4 versions, and all are set up with PB washers. The main reason is the cutouts necessary for the bearings offers noticeably less support against the pivot. Simple physics at play,....when you effectively take away about 1/2 of the blade thickness the pivot cannot support the blade as well. (No, the "spacer" added in there with PB washers is not the same) It still works and I will use my Gen 6 versions,...but will pick up a few more Gen 4 XM-18's as backups,...since it looks like Hinderer will likely be "only" making the Ball Bearing Recessed versions from now on.

gosmitch Bearings flip the best but can junk up and if the steel gets corroded they can seize up. PB is the most durable physically but needs lubricant so they are more likely to collect junk. Teflon/nylon isn’t as hard as PB but doesn’t need lubricant and is a little smoother.

Few questions: 1. Didnt see hardened steel washer for the bearings, where they seat against the Ti scale, (side), whereas this approach has become pretty ubiquitous among todays better frame lock choices, am I right about that? 2. The metal liner under the G10 is steel, I believe? So washer not necessary there? 3. To the guy below preferring the Tri ad lock. That sounds like someone who watched the Cold Steel Lock test videos a couple years back. A question Ive had based on those, as a Hinderer was not tested, only hinderer uses 2 controls on lock bar over travel, one near the blade and one well back mid lock bar. The failure mode of Reeve style locks, as was demonstrated in those tests, is actually more at the hinge, not so much the blade, lock bar interface, though everybody looks at the latter. I wonder if the Hinderer approach prevents lock bar flex and the failure that follows?
@mforrest1508
@mforrest1508 5 жыл бұрын
People complain about bearings on ti but it is not an issue. The liner is titanium as well. Lockbar overtravel is so unnecessary. Triad lock is stronger than any frame lock. But hinderer makes a solid lock. No worries.

IASKWHY yeah the do go out of there way. It simply doesn’t happen. I have never heard of that being an issue nobody has. No pictures no nothing. You couldn’t make it fail if you tried, you will just have to trust me on that. Or look around. If there has ever been an issue someone would post about it.
@mforrest1508
@mforrest1508 5 жыл бұрын
IASKWHY I’ll go one step further, a steel insert on the lockface is not necessary. In normal use, if the geometry is right it is good for several lifetimes even in hard use. The steel insert became popular because nutnfancy battoned a Dpx knife through a log and the lockface failed. He was shit hot in the community so everyone new believed that was the way to go. But really the lock is less secure with an insert. That’s why hinderer never switched. It’s a peice of mind thing. Which is important when it comes to gear. But I think as you get more and more knives you will come to the same conclusion.
@mforrest1508
@mforrest1508 5 жыл бұрын
IASKWHY ok. I’m good man. I don’t have anything to prove to you. I understand physics and chemistry metallurgy and most importantly knives. The side load is very small. 10 pounds? If your prying. It doesn’t happen man. Not in a quality knife. I really should know better than to get into discussions like this. 😂. Read the book Bob Terzula wrote on knives if you don’t believe me. I'm anything but a "bearing-only" kind of guy, as evidenced by the fact that I carry a Small Sebenza more than everything else I own put together. If you're putting a flipper tab on your knife, though, it better flip, and that almost always means bearings. I've always loved the look and feel of the XM-18 but have never owned one, first because of the years when they were impossible to get and then because I was so disappointed by the action when I finally got the chance to handle a few. After this video I think I'm finally sold on getting one.

Hinderer has had the detent dialed in consistently for a couple generations now. My Gen 4 Hinderer's both have great detents and thus great flipping actions, not unlike the flipping action on Teflon at 22:50 in the video (he says Nylon washers but they're actually Teflon).

Some knife designs are timeless, to me the Hinderer XM’s just aren’t one of them. Maybe it was all the ZT and Kershaw variations, maybe it was all the hype that was built up around them then died down in years past, or maybe it was the disappointment of their initial flippers, but to me they seem so “played out”. It’s a good thing too that I lost interest when I did, because I was one of those idiots who paid a lot more than I should have for an XM-18 and 24. Luckily I sold them soon enough to recoup most of my money. What’s more, the overall design with the blocking plate, those external blade stops, and stabilizer disc (although once revolutionary) just seems “old school” now, kind of like cars with pop up headlights. The Buck 110 on the other hand is a great example of a timeless design. When the Special Edition was released, the addition of just a little carbon fiber made it look like a brand new knife. But even in the original wood and brass handles, the 110 still looks great after 55 years and will look just as good after another 55. The same can not be said for a lot of other designs.

@ThomasConnolly 6 жыл бұрын

@barneymiller7894
@barneymiller7894 6 жыл бұрын
Compression lock for sure.
@vanderie8482
@vanderie8482 6 жыл бұрын
I mean realistically the only time a lock is going to fail you is if you’re doing something silly like batoning with it. If that’s your goal (or you’re making a bug-out bag or something like that), then sure a tri-ad lock might be for you, but a fixed blade would do it better anyways. I’ve used my frame locks to pry with before in a pinch and never had an issue.
@ThomasConnolly
@ThomasConnolly 6 жыл бұрын
I get your point, but Hinderer claims their knives are for "hard use" which is an ambiguous term. What does hard use really mean? I was speaking in more technical terms. Frame locks can technically fail a lot more easily than other lock mechanisms such as the Tri-Ad lock, Compression lock and Lock backs. If Hinderer is going to claim his knives are designed for hard use, why is he then using a weaker locking mechanism type for his knives.
@JimSkeltonKnives
@JimSkeltonKnives 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Connolly I would have to do some research to verify but I do believe the XM pre-dates the Triad Lock, Axis Lock and I know for sure the Compression lock. The knife was specifically designed for fast one handed opening and closing for duty use, so a lockback would not have been practical. Rick also made fixes blades back then, which gave him the initial popularity amongst those in the field, so I’m sure people were looking for a folder while they already had a fixed blade. No one is standing on their folder prying open car doors, so the knife is plenty strong for its intended use.
@6nosis
@6nosis 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Connolly I’ve heard this theorized a lot of times throughout the years. Hinderer however has the best framelock geometry in the world as he sets each one by hand himself. So: My buddy flipped his truck the other day and had it towed to the house. Now this is an older model Ford Ranger... we were standing around the truck admiring his amazing driving skills to be able to flip a truck dead sober in the middle of the day and emerge with not so much as a scratch - when I start feeling my rite pocket and lo and behold I’m carrying my xm spanto 3.5 in fullTi / ti hardware and it’s just screaming at me “go on Chief, stab me through the fucking hood I dare you”. “As hard as you can Please Chief pleeeeease”. Well who am I to deny my XM a bit of fun? - so pulling it from my pocket and with a mighty THWACK i open her fully locked ... and before any one could voice their opposition and try and talk sense into me I yell “FORE”!!! Raise her above my head with two hands and bring her down as hard as I possibly could dead center into the hood!! BOOOOMSCRAWLl!! Wow that was satisfying I chuckle as my buddy’s look at me with a mixture of horror and glee in their eyes for lo and behold my spanto is finger guard deep through the hood and upon retraction not a friggin mark on the blade!! I raise her into the air blade first like I just pulled Excalibur from the goddamn stone!! Far off in the distance we heard angels singing and playing the praises of this magical blade. Boom again Again , again, ---now the door, boom, again again again until I cut the fuckinghandle rite out of the metal door ... nary a chip nor a mark is left on my precious Hinderer spanto but the car looks like it’s been attacked by wolverine! Believe me or not I give not a shit ; but the Hinderer XM18 is one of the most devestating knives ever invented by a human. I will ALWAYS sing it’s praise and never ever sell any of my 5 in my collection as it puts most other pretenders to the throne to SHAME!! Cheers Jim 🍻 ---Have a good one Gentlemen and don’t forget to put your XM in your pocket on the daily.. she’ll cut you out of any tight situation that could possibly arise!!

I stopped counting at 15 minutes but it was opened about 48 times.Irritating.I know about smoothness and bearings because I have several Hinderer ZT limited edititions.Why not make a long story short and focus on sharpness or disassembly.Almost every owner and manufactorer of a good quality knife knows and implements the benefits of ballbearings,finally Hinderer does too.

This is the most gimmicky bullshit I’ve seen. Hinderer solved the flipping issues years ago in the the Gen 4; they flipped perfectly fine. And I’m not aware of any issues caused by the Teflon washers, either. The insert on the Gen 5 was a good improvement. But the Gen 6... 🤮. This knife is catered to the the people who-as Rob Bixby says-only use their knives when they need to flip something while watching TV.

It's still a hinderer though. Cool... washer swap option.... but they still refuse to do anything different as far as style is concerned. Not to mention, who uses a frame lock for hard use?? Really?? Hard use goes for the axis/triad/bearing systems or back locks. This is pocket jewelry or a safe queen knife. Ment to whip out around your friends and show them how cool you are with a $400 knife that looks like an expensive Kershaw.

Jim Skelton suppose I should reword that a bit. They are boring. Unexciting/inspired. The argument could be made that they are function following form, but even if that's the case here, you still have boring 20cv steel. I appreciate the blade design and enjoy the stepped thumb stud details, but with a DLC coated blade and dark Ti back slab... they could have ran black hardware and made it more interesting. As a whole the knife is exactly that.... a knife. But when you are in the $400+ price range, you step into the ring with alot of other manufacturers with far superior design and QC (though you addressed the primary qc concern in the video, and it seems to have been rectified). You get what I'm saying right?

Ryan DeBelak I get where you’re coming from, but Ricks designs really are for function. If you go back 15 years you’ll see that Rick made some VERY artsy knives, quite amazing actually. But he designed the XM series to be used by emergency responders with only function for duty in mind. From there he has offered many finish options and accessories to doll them up a bit once he realized that the general public was buying them faster than he could make them. So he tried to cater to everyone.

Terribly Tactical I’m just replying in kind man. That’s like looking at someone’s newborn and saying “shit, you got an ugly ass baby”. I’ve only had one short range session with mine, 500 rounds, but it ran flawlessly. And no one else I know or any reviews I’ve seen have had any failures. I’m not too worried about it. FN is known to be quality and have excellent customer service. If it somehow fails, I know it’ll be taken care of.

It's a hard use knife. What the hell do you need with a "sophisticated package?" I own a Hinderer and the box is just fine. I'd rather have the company spend money on the knife and save on the packaging. But I don't know, maybe I'm just not "sophisticated" enough.

Yes but you paid a huge amount of money for an exclusive luxury product and the maker did not bother putting an ounce of effort or thought into the packaging that you paid a huge premium for - the box is cheaper than what you would get with a made in china 5$ knife

Stan Wilson Three are two schools of though. Some people are of tee thought that he could do some fancy $30 pelican case and die cut foam and etched metal COA card, etc, for another $45 worth of materials, and Jack up the price $50. Or just cheap packaging, which is just going to be thrown out, and not pay that extra $50. Either way, you're not going to get it for free, so YOU will pay for it.

Andrew Delashaw I'm sorry but I think this maker puts his products in 10 cent carton boxes to increase his bottom line profit margin --- a premium exclusive luxury item should always come in a worthwhile box - at least to make you feel like you're getting a premium product that you paid a lot of money for and waited months or years for

@@stanwilson7040 Agreed, when you are shelling out for a knife in this range, does a few bucks really matter? The presentation upgrade is almost as overdue as the actual flipper. Hell charge extra, they already have a business model of nickel and diming and $100's you to death for screws, pivots, scales, lanyards, over travel stops, liners, modular backspacer, etc. Lol. Let me add that it is about f'in time to fix the flipper. Only thing left is finally admitting and fixing the old ones. I really don't even care about the cost, I will even pay to fix the design/production flaws of the past! (which I have offered and been denied) I can already hear the "technique" guys queueing up there excuses, but for the love of god. Thank you, it is about damn time. Awesome knife that is a great edc finally lost the asterisk next to its name. Happy belated good job to the crew!

End of the day, it’s still a Hinderer. Same ole boring styles, same model knife, same ugly hardware. Instead of innovating a better knife design and offer a variety of materials, let’s waste all this time on a pivot system that well frankly, most knife owners will never swap out from bearings to nylon washers. Good sales gimmick when you can’t design a new style of knife. Just my outlook on Hinderer.

BigThumpr1 I don’t understand the spite here. Rick has released 3 completely new models in the last year and another the year prior. Why not take their most famous and classic design and upgrade it? There’s no downside. You may not like the XM series, but there is a whole community of fans of the model, and now they get an upgrade to a model they love. Nothing else really needed to be changed.
@BigThumpr1

Jim Skelton there’s no spite. If you do the same designs over and over and over and over, it gets stagnant and boring. Then you do collab with ZT, and guess what, it’s more of the exact same thing, all over again just made by someone else, the market gets flooded with tired designs. Would love for him to get out of his comfort zone, try new things and fresh designs. Again, no spite, just calling it how it’s seen from me and others who are like, meh another XM for the umteenth bagillionth time.
