How to solder on hinges: used 2.5mm OD heavy walled tubing. Make sure your edges are FLAT. UPDATE: One thing that was brought to my attention that should be changed: make your center hinge longer and the outer top and bottom hinges about 1/4-1/5 the size of the middle one. The center hinge needs to support most of the weight and it is more prone to twisting on you! (Courtesy Brad Smith!)

Brad Smith has mentioned one thing I really should have done: make your center hinge longer and the outer ones about 1/4-1/5 the size of it. He said the center hinge takes nose of the weight and twisting and needs to be stronger!

When you say "hinges" do you mean knuckles? Isn't the hinge the entire thing? Thank you. I like the whole preheat of the flux, cool, it's like pre-glue.

Hi Roberta...I have been following LKV and have been contemplating on taking a few of her classes....but can't decide which ones. Do you have any recommendations?
@robertapihl76
@robertapihl76 2 жыл бұрын
Any one of her classes can be found elsewhere and it’ll save you a lot of money. I’d never send anyone to LKV again lol The lockets can be learned from Alan revere for example, since it’s essentially his original work that has been personalized in her classes along with other tutorials he’s published. Alan has a book called “professional jewelry making,” and he runs a support group on Facebook for people who own the book and need a little help. He also does challenges and awards certificates of completion for people who complete certain sections. Melissa Muir helps run that group and between the two of them they make a FABULOUS pair to learn from! Alan is known among jewelers as “The Master of Masters” and for good reason. Multiple nationally recognized awards, previously ran a school for jewelers, has HIGH standards and is just as exceptionally encouraging as he is skilled. The book is $100 (I’m sure you can find a used one for less) and the support group is free. Beats paying $200 and not be able to keep any of the resources or videos.

@@robertapihl76 Thanks for that! Good stuff!! I have watched Melissa's videos as well on her journey with the Alan Revere projects. Will definitely buy his book! In all candor...I get a lot more from your video's more so than Melissa's. I soooo wish you lived in So Cal to offer classes. Your work is GORGEOUS! Thanks again!

Ah thanks darlin! I feel like Melissa is SO much more talented than I’ll ever be though! She has a beautiful eye for design and she teaches much better than I do I feel! I do worry some of my videos are out of date, and one day I’ll have more time to go in and show some new solutions to projects like these hinges I’ve learned over the last few years since I made this one. Next time I make a hinge project I’ll post an updated video! And that book is WELL worth every cent of it. And if you have any questions the Let’s Make Professional Jewelry FB group is where to go! Also Jinx McGrath has a great book that shows how to solder hinges and it has some great illustrations. There’s more than one way to do everything , and trying it all at least once will help you determine what technique you’re comfortable with using 💕

Hi, do you not have to flatten the edge of the tube for better contact?
@robertapihl76
@robertapihl76 6 жыл бұрын
huskyfluffy great question! It does help yes, but I’ve found that it’s a bit of a pain to get the tube orientated properly and between the solder and the 18g sheet I’m using, it’s still going to have good contact ;) if you’re all right with fiddling a bit more I recommend it though ;)

I think I read in Alan Revere’s book and saw on video On the Bench that one needs to file a groove in the adjoining pieces rather than saw a flat on the tube.
