Nice review. I’m rocking the Evoc Hip Pack Pro 3L - Best hippack IMO. I’ve had the Bontrager Rapid Pack and Dakine - good packs however the organization and comfort of the Evoc stands out.

Dakine Hotlaps 5 liter is my main pack for everything from 1 hour rides to all day rides. For shorter rides I use the bottle cage on the bike but for longer rides, I use the hydration pack. It is nice to have that option.

Mountain Smith makes great hip packs and with good prices. I have been using the Drift for about 3 years at least 3 times a week, I machine wash it and is still in great shape, probably will be for a long time.

I agree with Nic, the DAKINE HOT LAPS 5L WAIST BAG is my goto hip pack. Took some getting used to after using a camelback for years, but really like not having the weight on my shoulders.

I love the dakine stealth pack, it’s lightweight and barely feel I’m wearing it. Not a fan of strapping things to my bike so it’s a nice way to carry the essentials (tube, food, multi tool, tyre levers, co2). This combined with a water bottle and your good to go for local, 3 hour sessions. For anything longer I use the evoc cc 10L which is an awesome backpack

I also like the Dakine Stealth for the smaller size and weight. Any bigger, and waist bags bounce around too much, specially when jumping. If it doesn't fit on the Stealth, I use a backpack.

I've been using the Dakine 5L pack for awhile, but recently converted to a Lab Austere hip pack. I like how it has it's weight sitting lower on the hips as opposed to the higher waist centered hydration pack. It does a great job at bringing along plenty of water without making you feel off balance or jostled the way many other hip packs can. I have a Jeffsy and Clash and neither have good water bottle options so this is the perfect compromise. Also a UE boom speaker fits snugly in one of the bottle holder spots if you're wanting to rip down a trail at bike park while blasting tunes, great for party laps!

Upgrade from a hip pack to a lumbar pack. Mountainsmith makes some good ones. A budget one is the hiking lumbar pack from BP Vision on amazon 22.99! And if you want to go tactical...Helikon-Tex Foxtrot MK2 Belt rig! Its best to use a lumbar pack along with a shoulder harness system to equally distribute the weight and increase comfort.

I got my Hotlaps 5L for $40 on sale at Fanatic. I budget enough water for the amount of climbing I'm doing and then its empty and pretty light for the decent. I dig it and can't say anything bad!

Osprey Savu has been the best pack I’ve used. It’s been 3 months and I love it! Ergonomic design, spacious (when you organize your supplies correctly) and the most comfortable... from what I’ve tested. Dakine hot laps and Camelbak podium were (2) other packs I tested. They ‘worked’, but I returned them after my first ride with the Osprey Savu. These other packs didn’t measure up to what I was looking for in an all around pack. Just thought I’d throw this out there so reviewers check this pack out before they make their final buying decision. Thanks for your honest and entertaining reviews, Loam Wolf. I always look forward to your videos!

I have the Savu too and love it but wanted it to be better. I modified it by sewing in elastic waist traps like the Evoc Hip Pack Pro 3L. Now it addresses the only issue I had with the Savu.

Good info! If you could combine the Bontrager and the RaceFace it would be the perfect pack IMO. Love the organization of the Bontrager but the stretchy belt on the RaceFace is more comfortable. Kind of like wearing jeans with spandex in them. Total game changer, lol. I do really like the Osprey Savu as well for longer rides where I want to take 2 bottles.

I have the bontrager one it’s ok. A full water bottle does bounce off your back in rough conditions. I have now moved to the osprey talon 6 which gives more room and two smaller water bottles on each side. For me it’s a better option. I have been eyeballing the EVOC hip pouch

Love my Osprey Savu. Vented back, side pockets, organizer, phone sleeve, carries two bottles but isn't big and bulky because you can collapse the bottle carriers if they're unused. Sits perfect, doesn't bounce around. Bottles are off to the side and don't dig into my back, so I barely notice it's on. Only complaint is the storage of the main pocket is a bit small. It would easily fit a light shell but my jacket is bulkier which makes it challenging. Use it for longer rides and hikes.

SO...I’ve had many hip packs and you guys missed two really great “HIP” packs that don’t bounce around!... HENTY is a pack that is made in Australia and is my go to pack and handles a fair amount of gear. Next, the Source Outdoors Hipster which I used for some time but lacked storage capacity and has a killer bladder that never gets“FUNKY”! Both packs have shoulder straps, the HENTY has a much broader and non removable strap system and the Source has a smaller and removable shoulder strap that works great but tends to get tangled up when your putting it on. I’ve found that without support straps hip packs suck! They bounce around when your riding and become a distraction. Do yourself a favor and check out both packs. My HENTY has a Source bladder with a Camelback hose so it’s blend of three packs! I’m a big fan of hip packs and I’ve tried a few, without a support strap they are annoying and I feel that’s why people are on the fence with them...”GEO”

Big fan of the fanny.... One question - aren’t you a little concerned about the hard water bottle in close proximity to your spine if you fall off? I prefer the side mounted bottle, or bladder.

I use that Bontrager for long mtb rides and races (where I want more than 2 bottles between aid stations). It's awesome. I'm starting to find that I like the weight distribution of storing co2/tube/multitool in this vs saddle bag. So, I'm even starting to use it more for shorter rides under 3 hours. You're not taking a significant weight penalty by using this (I care about speed a bit), and it's way more comfy than storing all that stuff in jersey pockets. It surprises me that these haven't caught on more than they have!

I havent been able to make sense of the water delivery system in packs with bladders. And frankly I dont think manufacturers have either. Does it loop in front? Does it loop in the back? Gets caught on the seat. How does it clip? What happens when it comes off and dangles and you didnt notice. Bye bye spokes!

nowadays I wouldn't think that is so important considering most phones are somewhat waterproof
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input there. That's not something we even thought about as we've never had an exploding bladder. Chances are though, if you blow up a bladder you'll know it and where the phone is situated in relation to the bladder means it won't be sitting in a pool of water so it should survive alright as most phones are now fairly water resistant.

If you have a local mountain warehouse they have these on clearance: www.mountainwarehouse.com/traverse-waist-bag-p14502.aspx/black/ I bought one several weeks ago for $12 U.S. and it’s been great for a budget pack so far. My only complaint is that the waist strap is small in both width and length but it fits me and I’m a pretty big guy. Has 1 fleece lined pocket and 1 non lined pocket. Also has dual water bottle pouches with retention bungee straps as well as two side pouches on the wings and bungee on the back.
