Despite some errors I found watching this enjoyable. It's not easy to summarise entire history of a country into a short video like this. I read 'Land of White Lillies' book of Grigory Petrov and inspired by its history and process of civilization. I'm a Turkish national, and I saw many similarities between Finland/Suomi and Turkey in their culture. Both Ataturk and Alexander II tried to modernize their countries. Although Alexander II was a Russian emperor, he also contributed to the modernization of Suomi. I appreciate what Finland did and inspired many countries, including Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and Turkey...

Two small corrections: 1. The USSR did not win. They came close to winning, but then the war simply stopped (luckily). 2. Finland currently imports a lot of nuclear energy from Russia, so it can afford to not use coal.

I saw a documentary once about Finland in world war 2 once. I can't remember the name of the documentary but it showed how Finland was able to protect itself against Russian aggression with squads of soldiers on skis. The Finns were disproportionately outnumbered but were able to systematically deter Russian advancement. It's an incredible story of bravery and superior military brilliance. I don't know why this is more widely known. When I was younger I knew very little about what was to me such a far away place. As an older man I'm very interested in history especially European history. I love to learn all that I can about Finland as I am quite fascinated with this little talked about Nordic 💎 gem.

Finland got Autonomy but the Russians tried to occupy Grand Duchy of Finland in the late 1800s
@Dostrain
@Dostrain 4 жыл бұрын
Finland was occupied in the 18th century, yes. But after the peace treaty in early 18th century, Finland was again part of Sweden and wasn't occupied by Russians through the entire 18th century (which you could wrongly think from this presentation). Only after the Finnish War of 1808-1809 Finland was occupied again and transferred to be under Russian rule. But also a nice video even though it has some inaccuracies, I bet it's not easy to find out Finnish history in English.

Still dont know why is Finnish people related with Hungarians? Hungarians dont have any same word with Finnish language. Hunagrians have many Slavic and Turkic words but not Finnish. And gennetically Hungarians have Slavic 26% and Celtic 19% and Balkan 20% Germanic7% ancestors. only 0,5% have Finnish ancestors. in Finland peoples have 59% finnish, 28% germanic, 7% Slavic, 4% Celtic ancestors.
@Ichigoeki
@Ichigoeki 4 жыл бұрын
It's only the languages that are related, and even then it's mainly visible only to linguists. histdoc.net/sounds/hungary.html sums it up pretty well. TLDR: There're several hundreds of words with similar pronunciations and same meanings and the grammatical structures of the languages are quite similar. Hungarian and Finnish are not like western european languages that are basically each others' cousins at this point, more like 7th cousins, thrice removed. Point being that the connection between them is further down the linguistic path, but it's there.

min 5. "fearing invasion from the west" is a rather prejudicial intro here. Archival research reveals that the Soviet leaders never regarded Finland as Independent; they wanted to reconstitute the Czar's empire. It might be added that there wasn't simply a civil war. The socialists carried out a coup overthrowing the government, the members of which had to flee northward or hide.
