This is the story of the 1984 to 1986 Ford Mustang SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) with lots of photos, factory pics with facts and features of these rare and special high performance Mustangs during the mid-80's that are a nearly forgotten part of Ford Motorsport history.

Rare bird there... I've seen this SVOs get 600 HP on the track with turbo and a few other upgrades, literally they would put wheely bars on them!

Don't forget the 1982 model King cobra 2.3 l turbos 4-speed manual transmissions with the same gear ratio as the 83 through 86 SOV!! They might not have been as popular but they were still the same vehicles just a differents in style looking four headlights in the front of the grill of the Mustang Fox body and had a single cow injunction hood scoop in the middle of the hood with a king cobra on the hood my mom's Car was black with the orange and gold stripes the golden king cobra head on the hood stood out it was also a sunroof I do believe but it was a 4 bolt lug pattern instead of the 5 bolt lug pattern!! Truly a forgotten car out of the 1980's Mustang fox body's!! The 1982 king cobra!!😅😮😊

Good video, but you forgot to mention the 85.5-86 had 3.73 rear gear in the weak 7.5 rear end. Love my 86 SVO for 20+ years and over 170k miles.

I used to have an 86 SVO. I modded it pretty good. Had an 8.8 rear with 4.10s and ported head big valves bigger turbo/intercooler. Full 3.5 inch exhaust. Roller cam. At 20 psi it was a riot :)

There's an 86 in Odessa Tx...the guy is asking 7k. One also here where I live in El Paso for 3.5k that I wanted but its an 84 and has no title...shame.

Unless you have a low mileage, original car there's no reason not to improve everything about the SVO. It's a great platform to build something modern and enjoyable to drive.

Your timeline is off. The probe as being a replacement of the Mustang didn’t come about till 1988. After the SVO was out of production for 2 years. The SVO was expensive, more than the GT. That is why it didn’t sell well.

The 4 cylinder SVO was more expensive than the V8 GT. The SVO engine vibration wasn’t acceptable in my opinion and that defect was often brought up in car magazines.

I had an 85 GT when I was young on the military. My roommate had the 85.5 SVO. I would get so pissed drag racing him, lol. It was all down to the launch back then. 30 years later, I’m driving an Ecoboost with a few mods. Pretty fun to surprise a lot of people with just a couple of improvements and right at 400 ft/lb of torque. Of course if I want to haul ass in a straight line, I just jump in the Tesla, but what a boring ride.
