This throttle governed-- not hit and miss --was built in 1923 by International Harvester and restoring this 6 HP (horsepower) McCormick-Deering was a great deal of fun! I'm in the process of completely tearing the engine down and totally rebuilding it. This is my first old engine restoration project so come on along!
In this episode we finish removing the rest of the parts, pull out the cylinder sleeve and clean the block.

You’re not kidding about the safety glasses. I have had more wires stuck in me from using a wire wheel than a logical person would put up with. I’m currently tricking out my mini lathe and will be working on putting a “poly” V8 318 engine (with a six-pack) in one of my flat-fender Dodge Power Wagons shortly after that. Your videos are a pleasant distraction from the fact that these fun projects actually involve a good deal of work. 😂

I bet a good metal ice cream scoop would make a good tool for all that grease. 😲☝️

I happen to have a large pressure washer (it's actually 4gpm and 3500 psi). It would do a great job on things like that block. Using a sandblast nozzle with it really cleans things up quick. Not bad to do on a hot day either. Make sure to use duct tape to mask critical surfaces. It seems counterintuitive, but this will leave a fine grit of metal/paint/sand/other stuff on the part which leads to the rust to which people object. Wash the part well with a regular nozzle before letting it dry. The only rust will be a light yellow/brown superficial rust that easily can be painted over. One thing that I like about sandblasting is that you will find any cracks and holes that need attention.

I tossed the pressure washer around a bit. Also considered sand blasting. Probably either would work. In the final analysis it probably only took me two or three hours--- and an hour of that was the water hopper! Thanks for the suggestion and for watching.

I really enjoy your channel, If I could offer a couple of suggestions.....the cleaning of the crankcase portion and other greasy/ oily items I have used oven cleaner in those applications and the result was great...of course when done pressure wash etc to stop the chemical reaction. Additionally you may want to look into using Evapo Rust, for items like the cylinder, knock off the large scale etc with a scraper and place your part in a container of evapo rust and let it sit for a day and use fresh water to neutralize the reaction. It works great and Its biodegradable and not costic. Since i've gotten much older (alot older lol) and experienced I have looked into ways to cut down on the elbow grease...lol. I look forward to your next video. Regards.

In part 3 I'll explain a bit more. I was leery of putting the sleeve into the EvapoRust because of the cylinder finish. Looking back it probably wouldn't have hurt. Outlaw Jack will have some comments on the cylinder lining in Part 3. I do love EvapoRust but that 5 gallon bucket was almost $100!

Hi - total noob here...what was this engine used for in its time?
@Radiotexas

Internal combustion, four cycle engines like these came along around 1900. The were used primarily for farm use, freeing the farmer, his family and hands from backbreaking labor. Engines, sold by McCormick-Deering, Sears and Roebuck, Hercules, John Deers and many others, were relatively inexpensive given the amount of work they could do. Fuel was low grade gasoline or kerosene. By World War II many were still in use in rural areas and in some industrial applications such as cotton gins. After the war, rural electrification progressed enough where electric motors replaced the gasoline engines. The advent of higher horsepower Diesel engines took over as well. It is a fascinating hobby and engine shows happen all over the world. Hope this helps and thanks for watching and your question.

@@Radiotexas That helped a lot. It's so awesome to see someone take an interest in a hobby like this. I absolutely love that you go in depth and cover the history of any particular thing you're presenting. It makes it much more personable given you have a familial connection with all of this. All that is to say ... I'm looking forward to more videos!

Why didn't you borrow my pressure washer for a lot of that cleaning?
@Radiotexas
@Radiotexas Жыл бұрын
(1) Because we'd have to first find it in one of your barns (2) Then I'd probably have to rebuild it and (3) I have one! Actually I considered doing that but because I don't have enough concrete pad to roll the engine outside without blowing water into the shop, the pressurized solvent rig did the job. For anyone reading this, Frank is a VERY old friend who has several tin barns full of all kinds of cool stuff!!!
