Very interesting that this didn’t just go down the traditional and easier route of players who transferred between rivals or the like. Great to shine a light on some of the serious moral failings of people who are often idolised blindly.

When it comes to Qatar, there are enough footballers that qualify for this list. Overe here in The Netherlands we have Ronald de Boer (former Ajax, Barca, Rangers player). In Dutch media he despices people who mention the death numbers and say that they are inflated with other deaths (not related to the builds) He keeps hammering on the 'positive' impact it has on Qatar football. May I recommend a new series for the channel- The biggest 'What If' (alternative histories) in football. Here are some notable suggestions. - What if Alex Ferguson had been sacked by Manchester United in 1989? (Unthinkable looking back now but it very nearly happened) - What if Yugoslavia's dream team hadn't been banned by FIFA in the early to mid 90's due to the Balkans War? - What if South Korea had actually won the 2002 World Cup? (Would have been arguably the biggest fairytale and biggest scandal in football history at the same time) - What if Zidane hadn't headbutted Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final? - What if Lionel Messi had accepted Spanish citizenship in 2009? (Imagine the tiki taka dream team with prime Messi. Absolutely terrifying) All intriguing hypothetical scenarios that would be interesting to know how the modern game would be different had they happened.

The last one isn't a good What If, as Messi had already played in the Argentina national team for 4 years and had already played at the 2006 World Cup and the 2007 Copa América.

The ultimate Judas. World cup hero Tim Cahill. Who took a cash payout to finish his career in the middle east instead of Australia, assisted in the UAE World cup bid and now runs a clinic there instead of developing Australian footballers. It's a skidmark on what would have been the greatest contribution to modern football in Australia since we build fences around the ground the keep the roos out 😭

As usual a very well research and interesting topic. I had no idea about Messi's Saudi deal or Gullit's employment under a Putin puppet. As someone who grew up watching football in the 2000s, Ronaldinho's endorsement of Bolsanaro was disappointing to see as he was, in my youth, my favourite player. Also bitterly disappointing to see the aforementioned Messi Saudi deal, as Alfie said until recently he kept his head down and appeared to be someone that wouldn't take sponsorship deals for the sake of the cash. He will remain in my eyes the greatest player of all time and my favourite player, but a reminder because it is needed sometimes that those we idolise are not perfect and deserving of criticism.
@Chronicthekid
@Chronicthekid Жыл бұрын
A lot of people are hating on footballers for taking Saudi but let’s be completely honest with ourselves. If you’re offered of millions of guaranteed money, would you take it? I genuinely believe 99% will meanwhile the 1% have to be deeply religious or morally stable.
@SamJW
@SamJW Жыл бұрын
@@Chronicthekid Working people? Ya we can have a conversation as to if you're really struggling economically, I can understand accepting millions from a morally repugnant regime if it's to save yourself from starvation, eviction etc, but we're talking about footballers, in this instance Lionel Messi, who for the past few years has been earning £1M a week plus bonuses and clauses. There was no reason for Messi to accept the Saudi's blood money.
@Chronicthekid
@Chronicthekid Жыл бұрын
@@SamJW Look at billionaires. They already have billions but they keep coming out with more product to make more money. Jeff Bezos has enough money for 5 lifetimes but he still intakes the money because money makes the word go round. Not justifying what these footballers are doing but it’s the truth.
@SamJW
@SamJW Жыл бұрын
@@Chronicthekid I know you're not justifying the actions of these players, however the difference between the example you gave of Bezos and Messi for instance is, first of all Amazon is in the market of destroying it's completion and don't really care about the public image of the company, thus they see what products sell best and undercut their rivals by making similar items and charging less because they can make the overall cost of production lower as a result of the companies infrastructure and those actions result in Bezos among other becoming wealthier. Messi as an athlete and his management team are able to pick and choose his sponsorships and the deals they strike and they will consider the impact those deals will have on his image and the legacy he leaves. To compare let's look at Pele, on the pitch one of the greatest players ever, but his legacy has been sullied as a result of following his career he took any sponsorship going and now is mocked because for it. Take Pele being mocked for promoting all sorts of silly products. Now if you're Messi think about you're greatness of the pitch and all your accomplishments forever caviated with helping sportswash the reputation of a regime with an abhorrent human rights record. Similar, as Alfie stated in the video, has occurred with Beckham. His career list of moments and accomplishments have been tarnished with his decision to help promote the Qatar World Cup and associate with another repugnant regime. Finally, their justifications are obsurd, Messi, Beckham and so many others claim their involvement with these regimes is to 'help go football' or 'help this nation progress' so add blatant lies to the staining of their legacies.

I don't think Gullit is a worthy inclusion here. As far I know he didn't express explicit support for the Chechen government, he just took a good paying job in the Russian Premier League. By the same logic, any player signing for the likes of PSG and M. City should qualify for the list

Lmao the uk government and the west currently funds the Saudi and repressive regimes in the gulf . I think this ukraine war was a good way for them to whitewash their image. Rather than going after players they should go after politicians leaders or buisness men who have more clout. Beckham is more connected than dare say Ronaldo and messi and I won't be surprised if he has more shady dealings behind the scenes with politicians and others etc. Man as a messi fan I would rather have him retire than play for that soul less shallow pit of a club psg .

Well done mate , I have had a wee look at your stuff over the past couple of months , thoroughly enjoyed it and passed it along to my football loving buddies . For me as a Bolschie Celtic fan it isn`t a massive jump in consciousness to really identify with a lot of the issues which you bring up . But what I really love as an old git who enjoyed Fantasy football ( with Badiel and Skinner ) the football journalism from the real fans in " My favourite year " , When Saturday Comes etc etc , it`s nice to see that the tradition of humourous well informed football journalism is alive and well with guys like yersell . Still waiting for an opinion from my other Celtic buddies on your stuff , but some of them are of the naive attitude that politics has nothing to do with sport . Au contraire mes Amis , tell that to Tommie Smith and John Carlos . and that`s one of the reasons I enjoy your exposure of the despots who use fitba to sanitise their horrible public image. Keep up the good work young man .Always love to hear accents from the UK ( I live in Germany and I miss this almost as much as I miss a fry up ) . I shall continue watching and write again . Some of the comments are priceless. 🙂

Lothar Matthaus is might also be a good addition. Though not that apparent, but in general when he was the captain of Hungary, he basically called up like a 100 different players in 3 years and tried to sold them to foreign clubs. He failed to qualify to any major tournament and only pursued his own interest instead of actually managing the team. Probably he did the same elsewhere too.

Idea which might be interesting to your English subscribers: 7 USMNT players likely to make the WC squad who haven't played any club football in Europe. Sean Johnson, Walker Zimmerman, Aaron Long, Cristian Roldan, Kellyn Acosta, Jordan Morris and Jesus Ferrara. Paul Arriola would make 8 which means you could do a "top" seven by bumping Aaron Long, but he played 2 games on loan at Swansea, so tough luck. Several of those players would make my starting XI vs the 3 lions for specific tactical reasons, including Morris (very strong, very fast winger/forward which could pose problems), Roldan (frequently used in holding and attacking mf, he's also the USMNT's best defensive RB, which sets up a Yedlin-Adams substitution to push McKennie further forward if a goal is desperately needed), Zimmerman (currently the best center half in MLS, by a margin), and Johnson (just better than Horvath & Turner, from what I've seen).

To be honest: Beckenbauer didn't do anything, any other official that wanted to get a World Cup to his home country would do. And unlike say Platini, he used most of the money for that World Cup bid and not to enrich himself. Just to point this out: Platini, not Beckenbauer, was considered to be Blatters favorite student, who is the literal devil in Football. Honestly, when the shock, when we Germans found out, that our World Cup bid wasn't just the best by far, but that "we" also partially bought it, was one of the most amazing things I have seen. And it is also a bit of racist, since we all knew or expected, that all the other bids in this millennium were corrupted. But we Germans were good enough to get a World Cup without these shenanigans.

all I’m gonna say in his defence is two things: 1. His father is known to have a huge influence in managing his financial side of things. That is one of the main reasons he got caught up in the tax fraud issue. 2. As an active player, I’m sure Messi isn’t keeping up to date with political issues in the Middle East. It’s more that his father sees the money and goes yeah, this makes sense.

@@nilsoskar he isn’t a teenager anymore. His father isn’t going to be forcing him to do anything, and you have nothing to suggest it’s just his fathers decision and Lionel doesn’t support it.

This one might only be about footballers, but the football icon that committed the greatest betrayal of them all has to be Wenger. Well renowned for his strong principles during his managerial career and how much he helped improve the health standards for players, etc…, FIFA ended up buying away all of his morals.
