Messi as an athlete and his management team are able to pick and choose his sponsorships and the deals they strike and they will consider the impact those deals will have on his image and the legacy he leaves. To compare let's look at Pele, on the pitch one of the greatest players ever, but his legacy has been sullied as a result of following his career he took any sponsorship going and now is mocked because for it. Take Pele being mocked for promoting all sorts of silly products. all I’m gonna say in his defence is two things: 1. His father is known to have a huge influence in managing his financial side of things. That is one of the main reasons he got caught up in the tax fraud issue. 2. As an active player, I’m sure Messi isn’t keeping up to date with political issues in the Middle East.
