From Gianluigi Donnarumma filling the void vacated by Gianluigi Buffon to Brazil and Botafogo having Jairzinho as a ready-made replacement for Garrincha, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of football legends who seemed impossible to replace, but ended up having very worthy successors.

I would give an honorable mention to Mainz 05, who were managed by Jürgen Klopp in the 2nd Bundesliga and ended the following season with Thomas Tuchel as their head coach. Replacing Klopp seemed impossible, but they managed quite well i would say.

Dalglish's success at replacing Keegan was not that great a surprise. At the time Scottish football was a lot stronger than it is now. Celtic had reached the semi-final of the European Cup only 3 years earlier and Dalglish himself had played against Atletico Madrid. Dalglish had played all 3 games for Scotland in the 1974 World Cup, when England had failed to qualify, and Scotland went home unbeaten in their 3 group games. The person who seemed irreplaceable at Anfield and who wasn't was Bill Shankly. Few expected Paisley to emulate Shankly and yet it was Paisley who won European Cups, a feat that had escaped Shankly.
@franzreyes846
@franzreyes846 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say Shankly was irreplaceable when the person that replaced him was in his own coaching staff so there really wasn't a big turnover there. The fact that Joe Fagan, who was also a part of that staff, also won a European Cup kinda shows that it's still more of Shankley's blueprint that gave them the European Cups rather than Paisley surpassing Shankley.

Oh yeah,I had Dalglish posters on my wall when he was at Celtic and even as a twelve year old Aussie I knew he was a top player, I remember hearing the news we had signed him ,I was excited.
@cbarclay99
@cbarclay99 2 жыл бұрын
@@franzreyes846 You miss the point about the personalities of the two men. Shankly was larger than life. Paisley so understated that he was never considered for the England job despite his achievements. This was the era of big personality managers such as Brian Clough and Malcolm Allison. As for the Shankly blueprint ... Shankly's best chance to win the European Cup was in his last season. Liverpool however were beaten home and away by Red Star Belgrade, a team who were then beaten in the next round. Under Shankly Liverpool's style of play was very English - hard tackling and hard running with a never-say-die attitude. It was Paisley who took the lessons of the Red Star defeats on board and developed a more possession-based style of play without losing any of the mental or physical toughness. The result was that Liverpool became the top team in Europe for a decade. In England, due to their more economical use of energy, Liverpool won back-to-back titles, something that they had not done under Shankly.

I would like to congratulate and thank the channel for the respect with which it treats Brazilian players of the tri-champion generations. I notice a certain anachronism of people who question why they didn't play in Europe, something that was simply rarely done at the time, especially at a high level. Potential mention to Xavi-Rakitic. Don't get me wrong, Rakitic was *NEVER* the legend that Xavi was, but he did manage to, quite comfortably, fill the shoes of someone thought of as irreplaceable for a few seasons. In Rakitic' first season, Barcelona won the treble (league, cup and champion's league), scoring in both the knockout-match against City and the final against Juventus (I know this was Xavi's final season but Rakitic was the first choice starter). In the following seasons: 2016 Rakitic and Barcelona won a domestic double, 2017 they won the cup, 2018 they won a domestic double, 2019 they won the league, 2020 they won nothing and he left.

When hearing you talk about the Atletico de Madrid situation I actually thought you were going to cover more about the switch from Falcao to Diego Costa, the Torres to Kun example was great and that Kun-Forlan frontline was beyond scary, but going from Falcao, as established as a goalscorer he was, part of world 11 and for a couple of months the best striker in the world and insanely clutch player to the production of an unknown Brazilian player who had a couple of decent seasons in not as good Spanish teams deserves some more talk than just cycling with the insane names they have gotten, cuz those insane names are or were usually good. Also you could talk about how in the long run Benzema replaced Raul, considering one played with the other literally for one season and they are gonna be neck to neck in Madrid goals and accolades, having similar roles in the early stages of their respective careers

@@mohaumokhethi8625 Well, there is a longer history of organized cricket and rubgy, South Africa have been superior in those sports than football and the competition in football is a lot tougher. Money isn't everything either, just look at Everton for example. It is how or who organizes it. Why do you think Bayern Münich dominates german football? They might be the best runned club of all top clubs in Europe, with old Bayern players in top positions, that knows the club, the league and the sport inside out. Even though some players leave them, they replace them wisely, like Lahm with Kimmich or Robben with Gnabry for example. So it's a far wider question than just about money :)

Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

Exactly ! Kimmich is a world class cm/dm but an average RB. Lahm was the exact opposite.
@SoLazy100

Lahm was a great DM. Germanys problem was the center defense. When Schweinsteiger filled the DM role again, after his injury, Lahm moved to RB and Boateng to CB. The Boateng/Hummels pairing worked great, Mertesacker/Hummels were painfully slow.

im happy to hear your opinion about Romario. I am 38 and Brazilian and ive never seen a better striker than Romario. His composure was nothing ive never seen and he carried that 94 team to a World Cup. Ronaldo was a genius (especially before the injury), but INSIDE the box romario might have been the best player ever.

Gerd Muller replaced by Karlheinz Rummenigge at Bayern and West Germany. I'm not claiming that Rummenigge was Muller's equal as a striker, but he showed that Der Bomber wasn't irreplacable.

Alfie, you can't lie to us, the first two minutes of Buffon's segment were just you realizing that a two minute introduction was too short for your own standards and feeling compelled to double its length.

after this prem season, it’s easily a great one to say haaland for agüero, even pep said agüero was irreplaceable, and then haaland had one of the greatest premier league seasons for a single player ever, and it was his debut.

well most germans will disagree with you on that one. while kimmich is undoubtedly a great player, he was heavily critisized for underperforming at both the 2018 world cup and the euro2021. also he got a lot of crap for being an anti vaxxer so there's that... most germans that are not bayern fans don't really like him especially compared to lahm
